1. December 7, 1941: Attacks on Pearl Harbor: Around November 25, the US intercepted a message of an imminent attack on US soil. In addition, Japan started to move its navy towards Hawaii. Washington’s response to this was a warning to Hawaii, indicating the anticipated attack. However, on December 7, 1941, a fleet on Japanese bombers approached Pearl Harbor with the intent to bomb the navy port. US navy ships were left defenseless as the Japanese torpedoes starting to sink them. Within two hours, US lost eight battleships, two cruisers, and more than a hundred planes. About two thousand soldiers died and one thousand were injured. As a result of this attack, President Roosevelt addressed the Congress, asking for the declaration of war. On …show more content…
February 1945: Yalta Conference: The Yalta conference was meeting held by the leaders of the 3 most powerful allied countries: the US, USSR, and Great Britain. They were there to discuss reparations in Germany. They all agreed that Germany should have a military power. Stalin, however, wanted $20 billion from Germany to pay for reparations, but FDR and Churchill disagreed. At the end of the conference, they all agree to divide Germany into four zones. The US, USSR, Great Britain, and France will each get a zone. This also led to the division of Berlin. The Yalta conference left Berlin and Germany divided until the end of the Cold War.
5. 1947: Truman Doctrine: The Truman Doctrine was one of the policies under President Truman’s “Containment Policy.” In the Doctrine, he requested $400 million to bolster forces in eastern Europe to defend against Communism. Congress agrees and passes the doctrine. Dean Acheson, who was the Secretary of State at the time, argued that the fall of a Communist country will have a “domino” effect on the neighboring countries, and they need to be properly prepared for such a situation. As result of this policy, the US became the “global

1972 – 1974: Watergate Scandal: In June, 1972, Police arrested five men who broke into the the Democratic National Committee Office in the Watergate District of Washington, D.C. When further investigated, two more men were arrested. Following a background check, it was revealed that the men belonged to a committee to re-elect the president. It was also revealed that men were paid by the committee and the committee was controlled by the people who work in the White House. This information was gathered by the Washington Post, which had an FBI informant, nicknamed “Deep Throat.” The investigation revealed that some of Nixon’s closest advisors may be involved in the scandal. Nixon was also thought to be involved as the investigation proceeded. During Senate hearings, Nixon denied an affiliation with the scandal, but it was revealed that Nixon recorded every conversation in this office. After refusing to hand-over the tapes, the Supreme Court ordered Nixon to do so. He did turnover the tapes, however there were minutes missing from the recordings. Congress drew up the Articles of Impeachment to impeach Nixon, but he decided to resign before he was
Over 2000 Americans died during the attacks on Pearl Harbor, more than half of them were on the USS Arizona. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was unprovoked and devastating. The American naval men at Pearl Harbor were carrying out their normal Sunday routines which consisted of sleeping in, eating breakfast, and attending an optional church service. On Sundays, the harbor was left very vulnerable. The attacks on Pearl Harbor were very large quick, destructive, and deadly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpbt0Cxze60
My paper is about the events leading up to Pearl Harbor and if the attack plans were known
“A date that will live in infamy” is how Franklin D. Roosevelt described the attack on Pearl Harbor in his speech on December 8, 1941; just one day after the attack took place (F.D.R., E-notes). The attack on Pearl Harbor was not only one of the most considerable attacks on America but also one of the most important. America was in the middle of a large-scale depression with issues of unemployment, the long-term effects of the Great Depression, the Stock Market crash, and overproduction. As a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American domestic economy was prosperous through conversion, solutions to unemployment and essential production, competition and nationalism, propaganda and price control, and large outputs. Because of
The attack on Pearl Harbor was just before 8 in the morning, on December 7, 1941. Hundreds of Japanese war pilots attacked the base near Honolulu, Hawaii. This attacked lasted about two hours or less, the Japanese managed to destroy about 20 American vessels, eight massive American battleships, and more than 300 of their airplanes. About 2,500 American soldiers and sailors died during this attack and about 1,200 were found wounded. This attack on the base led the US entry into World War II.
Pearl Harbor occurred in the morning December 7th of 1941, which was a Sunday. There were six carriers with 423 Japanese fighter planes that attack Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack in several waves, the first wave was 183 Japanese planes that took off 230 miles north of Oahu and were heading to Pearl Harbor. When these planes took off, at 7:02 a.m., a short radar station detected the planes and then contacted a junior officer who said it was American B-17 that was expected from the U.S. west coast. The second wave was 167 planes that took off from the Japanese carriers and headed to Pearl Harbor at 7:15 a.m. At 7:53 a.m., the first wave attacked the airfields and battleships and the second wave attacked other ships and shipyard
Pearl Harbor was a very horrific attack on the United States. The attack was brought on by the United States not wanting to get involved in war. But Japan wouldn 't stop until they got more land and a way to produce their own resources. Japan being able to produce their own resources would make them stronger by not having to rely on other countries resources. The United States began to feel threatened by Japanese military actions toward China in hope of expanding their empire, because the United States had a piece of land that they owned. The United States then had no choice but to take action so that it would weaken their military. This action eventually lead to the main reasoning for the attack on Pearl Harbor. As the United States prepared to go to war with Japan, women were able to get jobs and American resources had to be conserved and reused. The U.S. would then go to war with Japan. So they bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima killing almost double. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima would then make other countries know just how powerful the U.S military is and what they could do if japan continued to try and expand.
The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 is horrible terrorist attack on the United States, like the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 because of the unpredictable moment of the attack. The World War Center Buildings in New York were destroyed and we still have the memorial that reminds us of the terrorist attack. Pearl Harbor had both the U.S.S. Arizona and the U.S.S Utah commissioned there but were destroyed during the attack, each a ghostly, decaying tomb reminding us of the thousands that gave their life on that fateful day, both of these tombs are reminders of how America, one of the strongest if not the strongest nation in the world was so easily caught off-guard. Both of these days were horrible but they lead to two completely different outcomes, after Pearl Harbor the United States declared war on Japan and as a result Germany and Italy were involved because of the Anti-Comintern Pact, and after the attack on the World Trade Center America decided to increase their security to provide a safe place for civilians. Both of these attack have had an impact on American history, over 60 years ago most of the information relating to the Pearl Harbor attack has been released giving the historians documents to analyze and to see whether there were signs that America could have taken to prevent the attack or whether the Japanese actually did it without warning. The United States and Japan didn’t have a good relationship because Japan’s imperialistic and
On December 7, 1941 the Japanese surprise attack destroyed ships at Pearl Harbor and airplanes at the air stations at Hickam, Wheeler, Ford Island, Kaneohe and Ewa Field in Hawaii. The attack killed over 2,400 Americans, sunk 4 battleships and destroyed 188 U.S. aircrafts. People demanded to know why the U.S. did not see the attack coming. Some conspiracies blame President Roosevelt for knowing of the attack coming in order to draw the United States into World War 2. President Franklin Roosevelt did not know of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as evidence by the diplomatic relations prior to the attack, government documents from the President exchanged that day, and multiple investigations after the attack.
At the time of the attack, there were approximately eighty different vessels in the harbor, most notably eight battleships, three cruisers, four destroyers, one minelayer, five auxiliary craft, and over 400 aircraft present at Pearl Harbor (Figure 2). Additionally, the three aircraft carriers of the fleet were not present: the USS Enterprise was approximately 150 miles West of Pearl Harbor, the USS Saratoga was still in San Diego, California, and the USS Lexington was at sea in the vicinity of Midway Island (Yarnall, 2003). The Japanese Imperial Navy forces that attacked Pearl Harbor were comprised of six carriers, several submarines, and over 450 aircraft. Despite being outnumbered in terms of sheer military power, the Japanese forces had the element of surprise on their side, allowing them to strike the first blow of the
“December Seventh, 1941 the surprise was complete. The attacking planes came it two waves; the first hit its target at 7:53AM, the second at 8:55. By 9:55 it was all over . 1:00 PM the carriers that launched the planes from 274 miles off the coast of oahu were heading back to japan.” ( EyeWitness to History ) “ It was described by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as “ a date that will live in infamy “, a day on which the slaughter of 2,400 US troops drew America into the second world war and changed the course of history.” (Pearl Harbour memo shaw US warned of Japanese attack) The sights of the aftermath of the bombing was unbearable. 2,403 dead, 188 destroyed planes and
On, December 7, 1941, a date that will live in infamy, the United States of America was attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. On this early sunday morning hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base destroying or damaging twenty American vessels including eight battleships and over three-hundred American planes. In this attack over two-thousand-four-hundred Americans lives were lost including civilians and another one-thousand wounded. A day later the United States of America declare war on Japan, entering WWll.
“Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”- President Franklin Roosevelt. President roosevelt gave this address the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor as he declared war on Japan. The Bombing happened early morning on December 7th. 2,403 had been between every bombing while 1,178 were wounded. 18 ships had been sunk in the first round of bombs while Pearl Harbor and the base were bombed on the second round. Japan had sent six aircraft carriers which were intended to to launch 408 aircrafts. 360 were to be for attacking and 48 were planned for defense. Pearl Harbor had been completely caught off guard
It strikes me that the attack on Pearl Harbor in the world war Ⅱ in the last century is playing an important role in the world. In 1941, the Japanese military dispatched over 300 planes to foray the Pearl Harbor which is an important naval base for the USA. In this event, there are over 40 naval vessels sunk, almost 200 planes shot down and casualties numbered in the thousands. The next day, America declared war to Japan. The Pacific War erupted.
Early morning on December 7, 1941 over 200 Japanese fighter planes covered the sky over Pearl Harbor. The strike lasted for two long hours, the damage done was devastating. The Japanese were able to destroy about 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, they destroyed more than 300 airplanes. About 2,000 American’s died in the attack that day, and another 1,000 men were
In this article is about how well plan out Japan had the raid on Pearl Harbor. The preparation for the Japanese Navy before the Pearl Harbor attack were intelligently planned. The denial and deception plan or communication intelligence was used to distract the U.S. military intelligence of the Japanese vessel's location. The U.S. depends only on radio communications, therefore they were incorrectly confident on the sight of the enemy. This strategy leaves the U.S. with the information on the Japanese naval ships not been so near to the Oahu Island that morning on December 7,
