Updike’s poem, “Ex-Basketball”, is a poem that remembers the heyday of Flick, while at the same time illustrating a descriptive picture for the reader. He commences with a description of a journey down a street that could represent Flick’s life; full of turns and promises but dead ends because of a lack of training. Moreover, John Updike composes this poem with figurative language, correct diction, and imagination using valuable elements to create an excellent effect on the tone and meaning of this poetic style poem. I could say that the theme of “Ex-basketball” focuses on the fact that if one does not work hard on achieving their goals, they will not succeed in reaching their dream. In fact, the outcome of not reaching your goals can lead to frustration and disappointment in life. Evidently, Flick shows a reflection of people who once were successful in sports when he was in high school, but has drastically different future than one might think.
Hoop Dreams, directed by Steve James, is an outstanding documentary that gives the viewer a perspective on several different elements on the life of a teen basketball player. The film follows Arthur Agee and William Gates, two basketball stars, who live in the rough Chicago area. The inner-city boys get noticed for their skills, and they are recruited to play for dominant team. The audience follows the boy’s journey with basketball, school, and general life matters. The film dives into the reality of living in the hood and chasing a dream of playing professional basketball. The corruption of the school system and sports are examined throughout the film. The audience follows Agee and Gates through their triumphs and failures in their chase to the top. The director, Steve James, uses the film genre of documentary for the story of Arther Agee and William Gates because it highlights the raw moments of their lives.

Lonnie first meets a drunken Cal on a basketball court in a playground and tries to violently force him off until he pulls a knife on him. Instead of continuing to antagonize Cal, Lonnie decides that the best choice to get rid of him would be to leave him alone so that he would never have to deal with him again: “I could hit him and he’d have a heart attack and die and I’d be up for manslaughter or something” (pg 9). Luck would have it that Cal was actually a former professional basketball player and the new coach of Lonnie’s team– much to Lonnie’s chagrin. He initially revolts against this by refusing to practice with the team or by not showing up to practice at all; but he instantly regrets it after Cal manages to introduce legendary former basketball star Sweet Man Johnson to the team. However, the relationship hits a strain when Cal fails to show up at the team’s first official game without contacting anyone. Lonnie gets so furious with Cal’s absence that he immediately tries to shoot him but ends

In Legend by Marie Lu the author develops the theme that everyday is a fresh start to reveal Day’s perspective of life and his way of living it. At this point in the story June and Day have escaped the Republic and are going into hiding. A storm hits them and they take shelter in an abandoned train car when June asks Day what made him chose Day as his street name. Day says “Each day means everything's possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take all one day at a time… you try to walk in the light.” (Lu 304) This scene reveals the theme of taking life one day at a time because it shows how Day approaches life in his dystopian world. This emphasizes the mentality that Day has and how he is living life the best he can.
