The lecture notes and Valentin’s chapter “Sex and the City Voters, My Ass” provided good examples of language used to attack female politicians. The language used by the media and the journalist can often affect the public perceptions of these women. People become more focused in their appearance and personalities, and may disregard of what these women are capable of doing for the public. For instance, the lecture note discussed that there is no difference between the language used against Hillary Clinton during her current and 2008 presidential campaign. She was being called “emotional”, which results in the idea that she is incapable to making good decisions. As what you mentioned, the language used against female politicians can really affect
There have been many significant strides since 1970 when women occupied almost no major elective positions in U.S. political institutions. Today’s society has reflected remarkable changes in women’s equality and acceptance. In 2008, Hillary Clinton received 18 million votes when she fought for presidency of the Democratic Party . In 2011, Sarah Palin was listed at the top of her candidates for the Republican presidential nomination. However, women are consistently being underrepresented in the political world reaching beyond just the federal level. Clyde and Thomas attest the underrepresentation to two basic reasons: lack of political ambition as well as historic exclusion of women from professions that tend to lead toward the political arena . Three central barriers contribute to the difficult road ahead for the
WOOSTER — The Wayne County Chapter of the League of Women Voters has been organizing candidate nights for decades, and representatives of the group do not understand why Republicans refused to participate in this year’s event, which has now been cancelled.
Kelly uncharacteristically asks The Senator why he thinks women are not political animals - that is, someone who involves herself fully in the world of politics in the same way that a man typically does. Through Kelly, Oates presents her own thoughts and questions about why women are not held equal to men in the political sphere. The Senator presents the opposition to Oates’ thoughts making sexist generalizations about women finding politics boring and how they do not have the same power as men. Here, Oates sets Kelly forward as a strong female character because she is strong in her convictions about politics. When Kelly is speaking about her previous relationships, she appears weak because she has been hurt so deeply by them, but here, she is a star and fights back against The Senators condescension.
When slavery was abolished, people finally managed to realize one simple thing- its just a pigment in our skin that makes us different. But why couldn 't they realize another thing- its just our sex organs that make us different? Until the fairly recent 1920, women and men were held so different they were not even allowed to cast their ballots for the president of the United States. It drove some women, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony to start extremely important conventions that even led to a movement. Their supporters were often arrested just for just speaking out for equality. Women finally gained suffrage in the United States due to the National Women’s Rights Convention, American Equal Rights Association, and hard headed women who took a stand for their right to vote.
The proposed model seeks to elucidate the affect of female candidate’s rhetorical competence and how it relates to their electability. Through the application of political party, personal evaluation and gender expectations of the female candidate, in conjunction to the current political climate of the election, will positively establish the female candidate’s electability. The role of this model is to establish a flow of perception of the female candidate and how it affects the candidate’s chances to get elected into office.
Campaigning is the chosen straggly that will be used to make a change in sexism for woman in the work place. There five components that make up the Campaigning process: education, Persuasion, cooptation, lobbying and mass media appeal (book). This one strategy with its five components will be enough to make the desired change if it is carried out correctly.
Sexism is a problem that all women face, especially for those in high government positions like Penelope. Both
genders. Women may have the same political rights, however they are still degraded and seen as inferior to men. So, women in politics are now trying to prove that they are just as capable as men are. However, their attempts are being suppressed due to the inappropriate comments against them. Sexist remarks in the media against female political candidates is the reason why there is a smaller amount of women in government.
Sexism against women- Sexism still pervades in our society. A clear example of this is the way Hillary Clinton was
Gloria emphasizes the theme that nothing will get done or change in our world if all of our people, or at least a large portion of them, won't advance their efforts into participating in our own matters. Her mother had doubts that her vote meant nothing to the election, and even going so far to question why people should vote in the first place. Gloria goes on about what she has learned in her social studies class and how "voting is on of the most important elements of democratic government." Furthermore, bringing up the story of how American Women came to vote tops the cake in supporting her claim, that "single votes can often make monumental different." Gloria successfully convinces her mother that her vote can make a dynamic difference
In the article “Donald Trump Assails His Accusers as Liars, and Unattractive” by Alexander Burns and Nick Corasaniti, Trump denied claims of sexual assault against him. Trump has dismissed these claims by calling the women “liars” and has insisted that they just want fame (Burns and Corasaniti). His assertions have been believed by many of his supporters. The allegations against him have not hurt his chance at presidency as much as most would have thought. Some Republicans have dropped their endorsement of Trump or have criticized his actions, but many others have continued to strongly back him (Burns and Corasaniti). Many have agreed that his offensive remarks towards women are simply “locker room talk” and that “boys will be boys” (Burns and Corasaniti). It is hard to imagine that a female could have said equally as offensive remarks and had it dismissed as quickly. Double standards between genders have been going on for a very long time. In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote “The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” to point out the double standards that women face. She offered solutions to all of the problems and was a big advocate for gender equality. Stanton wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal” (“The Declaration”). It is such a simple statement, but for some reason it does not hold true today. Because many people have fought against the double standards between genders and believe that they are wrong, all men
There are public figures showing sexist and disrespectful attitudes towards women presenting it as acceptable. (Source A)Donald Trump is a prime example of a very well known public figure who has terrible views on women’s rights. He often makes sexist comments towards his female colleagues when getting in heated debates. He has been recorded on numerous occasions as publicly degrading women. Disgusting things as this have been said by our President who not only represents us as women but as a whole country.
Gender Matters is a collection of various essays on feminist linguistic texts analysis, by Sara Mills. Mills develops methods of analyzing literary and non-literary texts, in addition to conversational analysis based on a feminist approach. The author draws on data from her collection of essays gathered over the last two decades on feminism during the 1990s. The essays focus on gender issues, the representation of gender in reading, writing, and in public speaking. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of feminists’ analysis of sexism in literature and the relation between gender and politeness. The article is informative for my research paper, as my
Growing up in a conservative religious home, it was joked that a woman should be seen and not heard. This happened more often when I acted out and voiced my opinion as to why I should have a cell phone while attending high school. But as I looked around and became more involved in school and community, it wasn’t a joke anymore. Women in the United States are not involved enough in politics and government.
The political arena is a tough place to be part of, especially during a campaign. Your opponent and their supporters are constantly watching your every move with the hopes that you will make a mistake, or that somebody will find some detrimental dirt on you. Now imagine also being a woman, not only will you have to face the hardships that male candidates cope with but you will also have to handle the adversity based on your gender and the stereotypes that go along with being a female. Women have to be prepared to confront the fact that they may not even be wanted in that setting. For example Margaret Carlson stated,
