RYLA Facilitator Application 1. Throughout my sophomore year I was fortunate enough to participate in numerous leadership events. The most recent leadership event I attended was the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY.) This conference included group communication activities, entrepreneur one-on-one interactive discussions, and a marketplace competition. Being the only sophomore accepted to attend this event, I was dedicated to taking on the role of not just an active group member—but a leader that would led my team to a victorious 2nd place title in the marketplace competition. I had a unique way of leading. Through the use of subtle gestures (such as discussing everyone’s idea in the brainstorming phase rather than shooting any down and emphasizing how we should all participate in whatever product/service we would provide) I utilized each member’s unique talents. Actions like these are minuscule, but it when working in a group small and open recommendations are extremely more effective than one leader giving orders and extinguishing the fun—and effectiveness—of community-work. …show more content…
Being an active Greenport High School Interact Club member, I was selected to represent my school’s Interact Club. At the conference I had the joy of hearing Rotary leaders discuss the future of Rotary and amazing past successes. However, what really impacted me personally was meeting other Interact students from the island. Each student was a leader, basically everyone had stories of successful fundraiser or charities their Interact Club was involved with. Our Greenport Interact Club was very proactive already, but this conference shaped me into a more volunteer-minded person.Another great way the Rotary Conference let me practice being a leader was by giving me an opportunity to publicly talk about my school’s Interact Club and the fundraisers we had partaken
I have many experiences with leadership experiences due to my participation in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). In FBLA I had to take a leadership role in a group project that we compete with. While I was the leader I influence others to get the project done and work together as a team. I made sure that we were all on track and that our assign tasks were being completed. When there was an issue I would try to help them and figure out what was happening. I would bring peace when there was arguments.
The leader must be sure to take the group dynamics into consideration. It is important to make everyone involved feel that their needs are important. For the project to be a success, everyone participating must feel as if they are contributing and that they are being valued equally.
I have shown leadership many times while working in a group project or in an activity. I assign parts of the project to others and myself and share my ideas in the group. I try my very best to include everyone and try to incorporate their brilliant ideas in the project or activity as well. I make sure that everyone has a contribution
Since childhood, I had a chance to develop my leadership and organizational skills through sports and had my school team win many competitions. My school is one of the places where my leadership qualities are valued as I often become a head of many activities, such as staging plays, organizing shows and school trips with my teachers. Being a leader gives me the opportunity to work in a team and consider my peers’ ideas to make our plans creative and enjoyable for everyone. My personal traits help me to gain trust and respect of my peers as they believe me to be a positive, open-minded and reliable person. I have learned to solve problems and conflicts thanks to this great experience of leadership, and I am always ready to assist my peers when it is
Leadership has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself taking on leadership roles, whether it be by volunteering or coordinating different projects for the benefit of my school or community. Taking on leadership positions has allowed me to develop skills in communication, delegation, and managing multiple tasks and deadlines. As a member of National Honor Society and an officer of Student Council, I am presented with various opportunities to show my leadership skills. For example, I have been in charge of planning multiple pep assemblies for my school. Helping coordinate blood and canned food drives, angel trees, as well as organize an abundance of fundraising events has created a sense of reliability
Learning how to be a leader in all types of situations has been one of the most important skills which I have acquired. The most important growth in my leadership skills was through 4-H where I served as President, 1st Vice President, and various other positions. I learned valuable public speaking skills from a lawyer who was teaching a public speaking class and was able to apply this in the various duties I undertook as leader of my club. Now I step into leadership roles with confidence, trusting my ability to work with and lead everyone in the group. When I join the scholars at the Hankamer School of Business, I will be able to fulfill any leadership positions necessary with confidence, whether it be in a small group or large group
Throughout my school years, I have always tried to be a positive role model for younger students as well as my peers. This year I decided that the best way to serve my school was to participate in our school’s Student Leadership Council. It has proven to be a fantastic decision for me. I succeeded in getting the most votes out of all of the candidates and have had a great experience taking a leadership role in my school. I feel like I have become a much better leader and role model because of Student Leadership Council. I have been really fortunate to be exposed to the Jeter’s Leaders program, since they come to our school to mentor us as SLC members. It has been an incredible experience, and I would really love to continue with it. As an eighth grader at Saint Augustine, we are required to mentor our younger students. I
My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the time I didn’t think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and encouragement. Some of the most valuable leaderships traits that I acquired and fortified are:
Serving as a leader for my group for History Fair has really helped me improve my organization and communication skills. We faced many conflicts because my group and I had many ideas and different point of views and I had to be able to bring those ideas together into one functional project. My job as a leader was also to assign different jobs to the members of the group to make it fair to everyone and divide the work equally. At the beginning there were also many conflicts deciding the topic of the project so we decided to pick a group leader and by everybody’s vote I took the position.
BETA Club and National Honor Society promote academic excellence and service, therefore I have helped in several events. For example, I gathered boxes filled with toys for impoverished children. Also, I helped host a dinner to honor local veterans in an effort to give thanks to those who have sacrificed everything in the name of service. Interact Club has also given me ample opportunities to help my community, from setting up a food drive to making blankets for Project Linus. These clubs instilled a strong sense of service within me and motivated me to find more ways to which to help my town.
I occupy my time in clubs and activities that both captivate my interest and are most important for my peers and me. These include but are not limited to my positions in Link Crew, Student Council, and Senior Board. They range from Senior Class Representative to Vice President. Many of my teachers and mentors have identified a characteristic of mine as a great leader, and I wanted to improve on these skills. I don't dominate discussion or action, I simply guide it. I take all of my positions seriously and always bring my best attitude; my leadership methods distinguish me from other
Abstract: There are numerous definitions of leadership, all of which contain elements related to people (the leader and the follower(s)), communicating in person or by the written word, actions (organizing, directing, coaching, and/or motivating), and for a purpose (meeting a goal(s) or accomplishing a task(s)) (ADP 6-22) (Fisher 2015) (Bolden 2013) (Hogan 2005). Additionally, everything done occurs within a given context. Effective leaders are poised, proficient, pertinent, and practical in the application of the art of leadership. This means leaders are ready to engage the group with effective methods and
I passionately believe in helping and giving back to others, consequently I made a year long project as the president of Interact Club to make a ShelterBox fundraiser. Along with a girl I met during camp, we were the first Interactors to take initiative for a cause that Rotary had always helped. Still, I was like a domesticated turkey lost in the entrance of a maze: not knowing where to start. Though my goal of raising awareness in my community only further pushed me to contact outsiders . However, my partner and I had many incidents of miscommunications and finding a team with the same goal and work ethic was rather difficult.
During my time at Girls Who Code we had a hackathon where we worked to create games that we felt would be most intriguing to the judges. I was selected to be my group’s leader and come up with a fun gaming program. My friends and I worked together and brainstormed possible ideas. With this leadership capacity, I demonstrated respect towards my fellow group members and a sense of innovation and creativity. I dared my group members to be different and challenged them to think of a unique game that would truly impress the judges. Each group member had a different task to work on the project and as a leader I demonstrated the value of making others feel important and part of a group. I demonstrated a positive attitude with my group and made sure
When reflecting on my experience as both a student and a life learner, I never would have considered myself a leader. In fact, I have always been the shy kid who hides in the back of the class and panics whenever it is their turn to respond to a question. College however provided me with an opportunity to develop myself as a leader. I became more active in school activities and actively sought out leadership roles. As I’ve progressed in my professional life, I’ve become more interested in what it takes to make a strong leader. When assuming leadership roles, I’ve always considered myself an authentic leader but I know I’ve often struggled in detailing clear goals for my group or organization. Thankfully, Enrolling in the effective
