The Effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on a Marriage
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an overwhelming type of psychological condition that is caused by extreme stress. There has been a significant increase of people diagnosed with PTSD because of issues like war, death, catastrophes, ect… (Meis, Erbes, Polusny, & Compton, 2010). There were three hypotheses tested in the study. The first hypothesis stated that the soldiers who came back from deployment would be emotionally impacted having a negative influence on their relationships. The second hypothesis stated that the negative emotions associated with PTSD would have a significant impact on the quality of the marriage. The last hypothesis Meis, Erbes, Polusny, and Compton (2010) studied was that there was a link between the negative symptoms of PTSD and drinking alcohol. The soldiers were given a survey one month prior to the deployment and again two to three months after they returned from their 16 month deployment. The results were very intriguing because 15.8% had the symptoms of PTSD, 22.1% of the soldiers that were surveyed had significant issues in their marriage, and 30.5% had alcohol dependence problems. People who have posttraumatic stress disorder have to learn how to control their symptoms. Since there are no cures for PTSD, the patient has to be open with their therapist. An individualized treatment plan must be unique to that person. There are approximately 25.5% of returning veterans from the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom wars that have been diagnosed with PTSD (Meis, Erbes, Polusny, & Compton,
