The failure of the Founding Fathers to clarify their view of slavery in the constitution is also a cause of the Civil War. The issue of slavery was never clearly settled by the Founding Fathers, which lead to many arguments over the next decades (“Origins of the American Civil War”, 2005). In 1787 when the U.S Constitution was written, the interests of slave owners could not be ignored so, although slaves could not vote, white Southerners made the case that they should be allowed to as they contributed largely to the nation’s wealth. Therefore, the Constitution allowed them to be citizens and vote, but only counted them as 3/5 of a person for the purpose of representation in Congress. The clause allowed the South to have a larger role in the
I believe that slavery was not the core cause of the Civil War but rather the core cause was the vastly different belief systems and life styles of the North and South. Slavery was a symptom to the overall problem, so it received credit for the start of the Civil War. If Slavery had been the root cause, the south would not have seceded when Abraham Lincoln was elected. Lincoln made it very clear in his campaign and his presidency that his only concern was to preserve the Union and if slavery could preserve the union then so be it. Slavery was not threatened by Lincoln being in office but it also would not expand. The south seceded when the opposite party, who had different beliefs in how the government and nation should be ran, was elected
I believe that dispute on slavery was the largest of the causes of the Civil War, and it led to more disagreements between the North and South. After reading the South Carolina Declaration of Secession, the Georgia Declaration of Secession, and the Constitution of the Confederate States; March 11, 1861, I have determined that slavery holds the most blame for starting the Civil War. Just as the colonists fought the Revolutionary War for their independance from Great Britain, the South fought the Civil War to gain independence from the Union. The main reason the South wanted independence was that they feared they would lose slavery if the remained in the Union. The majority of the South believed that it was a right of the states to have slaves,
Slavery, as Abraham Lincoln often noted, was the root cause of the Civil War. Tensions over slavery dated back to the contradictory nature of the American Revolution of 1776 that resulted in a republic simultaneously committed to freedom for whites and bondage for blacks (Barney W., p. 61). Within years North and South reached the point at which compromise was not possible. At that time Civil War had been started.
Many different issues upon the north and south caused the Civil War, but slavery was the main conflict. Due to slavery, different political beliefs and systems were created causing conflicts such as disagreements during Westward Expansion and the election of Lincoln. The Constitution tried to balance the inequalities with many compromises, yet failed.
One of the main causes of the Civil War was the argument over slavery. Though slavery was not the only reason why the civil war happened it is still considered as one of the main reason that led to the fighting between the North and South. Slavery was an important thing not only because of the cruel or religious reasons, but just from the fact that it’s
Slavery was not fully addressed in the Constitution, in fact the word slavery was not mentioned in the constitution. There different sections in the constitution that prevent the government's involvement with slavery. Some may say that if government had the power to ban slavery the Southern states would refuse unite with the Northern states. It seems that the framers of the Constitution were trying to keep the South happy in order to keep the country United. The framers had no way to avoid slavery at that time, they did what they needed to do in order to keep the country together.
Another major cause of the Civil War was representation in the government. The North and South both wanted the power to pass laws that would benefit their section. The more states that became "free" or "slave" meant more votes, both in the House, Senate, and Electoral College for that section. The issue of
The Civil War was a battle between the north and south, and most people assume the reason the civil war happened was just that of slavery. This is true but most people don’t truly know what really started the Civil War 40 years earlier than the war started. The Civil War was truly started by one thing alone, the Missouri Compromise of 1812. The Civil War was an event caused by the Missouri compromise and all the ripples are created through the 40 years after. After the Missouri Compromise and its good job of holding the balance in the House, and Senate, but failed to keep people from speaking out against what it did, making political leaders speak up and battle between this compromise making one half of the country are prejudice group. It
I believe, the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the differences the northern and southern states' had about the abolishment slavery played a major role in why the civil war was fought. Abraham Lincoln thoughts about slavery and the state’s rights to avoid the abolishment of slavery were different. Abraham was an anti-slavery republican who believed slavery was bad for business and he did not want to see slavery spread to other parts of the United States. He was a strong believer that you could get more people to work for money vs working for free. The ideal of people being enslaved for work was not only cruel, but it also wasn’t benefiting America’s financial state. Although, Lincoln was personally against slavery, he never said he wanted
Arguably the most important cause of the civil war surprisingly did not even pertain to slavery. This unexpected cause involved the growing sectional differences between the North and South. The two places had separate economies, cultures, and geography. Because the South had flat, fertile, and sometimes swampy plains, crops became much more successful there. (Doc 3 Pic 1). Independant agrarian societies and farms took off, supplying food and raw materials to other parts of the world, notably the Northern United States. In lieu of fertile soil and easily diverted rivers as in the South, the North managed to take advantage of their other natural resources. For example, the rocky and mountainous terrain with quick-moving streams supplied
Slavery was one of the reasons why the Civil War was inevitable. You would think the South was the only ones to hold slaves but in fact, the North held them as well. The difference was that the South relied
The United States was a divided country long before the Civil War, while some people would argue that slavery was the only cause of the Civil War, it is much more complicated than that. There are many other factors involved, such as irreconcilable differences in terms of their economic, political, and social beliefs on a national scale. Many people including myself had a primitive and unsophisticated view of what caused the Civil War, post war propaganda and moral righteousness have caused many people to believe that the Civil War was simply a thing of moral impurity on the part of the South, however it is much more complicated than that. Although slavery played a major role in the Civil
Many people believe that the Civil War happened entirely because of slavery. This is simply not true. The south was put into a very difficult corner because of tariffs were levied overseas and as a result the southern states paid a disproportionate amount of the federal governments "income". As a result, the southern states wanted to secede from the United States because the south believed the government had gotten out of control and no longer wanted to be apart of it. In an attempt to solve these issues prior to the Civil War, the states came together to try and resolve these issues, which included the 1787 Convention delegates. It had been made clear in that time period that seceding from the US was not bad or good. But was accepted as an
The true cause of the civil war, and division between the states to begin with, was the fact that the central government of the united states attempted to overextend its power upon the states, and upon a people who did not wish to be controlled. Contrary to the tenth amendment we see that the government tried to control things by force that where outside of its designated powers. This lead to the true separation by the southern states to form the Confederacy. Slavery was then used as a propagandic tool by the Union to seize more power. Meanwhile, the Confederacy technically did nothing illegal since the second amendment was in place to prevent the government from turning on its own people and seizing power from the people. Along with this, the tenth amendment states that any powers not given to the government were left to the states, or the people. (The Constitution of the United States,1787) These all go to show that technically it was not slavery itself, but the combination of an overreaching government, mixed with the drive to preserve a way of life, that caused the civil
Slavery was the most important cause of the Civil War, because this single issue divided the North and South to begin with. The ideological differences between the North and South led to economic differences, conflicts over newly acquired territories, disputes over the constitution, and political extremism. The Election of 1860 was the culmination of these disputes and caused the South to secede in 1861 and guided the way towards the Civil War.
