Who are the Outsiders? Have you ever been part of a social group? Did you ever feel like an outsider? The book The Outsiders took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960’s. This book is about two teenage groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Both the Socs and the Greasers sometimes felt like outsiders. But which group was the real outsiders? Or, are the outsiders the people who see beyond society groups? I believe that the real outsiders are the people who see beyond society groups. The Greasers felt like outsiders around the Socs because the Socs were the upper class. Socs were always in advanced classes so when Ponyboy (a greaser) was in biology class filled with Socs , he felt like an outsider. When Ponyboy had to dissect a warm and the razor wouldn’t cut, he took out a switchblade. The girl beside him was a Socs and she sad “They are right, you are a hood” (Doc B). When Ponyboy recites a poem (Doc D), Johnny said “I guess we are all different”. When Johnny said “we” he was referring to Ponyboy, Sodapop, Cherry, and himself. (Doc D) Also when Randy and Ponyboy were talking, at the end Randy said “Thanks Grease…I didn’t mean that. I meant thanks kid.”(Doc E) Then Two-bit comes up to Ponyboy and asks “What did Mr. Super Socs have to say?” Ponyboy responds “He ain’t a Socs, he’s just a guy. He just wanted to talk.” (Doc E) Here we can see that both Ponyboy and Randy wanted to stop categorizing people. So maybe the real outsiders are the people who see beyond society groups. To conclude, The outsiders is a story about two different socisl groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Both groups feel like outsiders at times, but which of these two groups are the real outsiders? Or are the real outsiders the people who see beyond society groups? Maybe we all are
