Francetta Boyd James Madison High School Structure of a poem Summer March 31, 2018 The poem I choose is entitled “Summer” by Walter Dean Myers. The theme of the poem is set in the summer time and represents a season. It points out all the wonderful things and joys of the summer season. The author uses tons of descriptive words in the poem to describe his emotions and all theses awesome things and feelings of summer. In this particular poem the rhyming of the last word in each line as well as the repetition on some words sets the structure in the poem. The book that I chose to review was Summer ball by Mike Lupica. It is about a kid named Danny who let his basketball travel team to the league’s championship and won. The next year he is going to Right Way Basketball Camp, which is a camp designed for kids at the elite level of basketball.
In Rick Bragg’s “Endless Summer,” the author conveys his nostalgia and portrays how, to him, summer has changed for kids as time has progressed. He speaks about how summer seemed to last so much longer back then- stating that time “didn’t fly. It lolled.” Obviously, time can’t actually change speeds, this just emphasizes how slow it felt to him as a child. Furthermore, summer felt so prolonged, it was almost as if it would never end. The statement “When did summers grow short, truncated?” has a strong tone of discouragement, letting the reader know that he yearns to feel this way again, and hopes that the children nowadays and forthcoming generations are able to experience this sensation. The most obvious poetic devise of this poem is the rhyming scheme. Rhyming is when there is close similarity in the final sounds of two or more words or lines of writin.
The poem also uses end rhyme to add a certain rhythm to the poem as a whole. And the scheme he employs: aabbc, aabd, aabbad. End rhyme, in this poem, serves to effectively pull the reader through to the end of the poem. By pairing it with lines restricted to eight syllables. The narrator creates an almost nursery-rhyme like rhythm. In his third stanza however, his last line, cutting short of eight syllables, stands with an emphatic four syllables. Again, in the last stanza, he utilizes the same technique for the last line of the poem. The narrator’s awareness of rhyme and syllable structure provides the perfect bone structure for his poem’s rhythm.
This poem has a both rhythm and rhyme as it is told in rhyming couplets and littered with alliteration. An example of alliteration is in the second line of the poem which reads "her hardest hue to hold"
Summer by Josiah Conder , is describe as an a completely opposite Summer than the one everyone is familiar with. When thinking of the summer, thoughts of heat, vacation, and fun are usually associated with it. Conder describes the Summer as being a miserable time, where the skies are gray and gloomy. The sonnet itself is English/Shakespearean model which makes it easier for Conder to express different ideas in each quatrain but still relate them. Also Conder was a poet during the Romantic era where any feeling could be expressed towards anything. And that is what Conder does when describing the Summer. In the poem the speaker is having a conversation with no one , while they describe the Summer. Conder uses diction, imagery, alliteration and metaphor to help convey the idea that the Summer is not as fun and appealing.
The genre historical fiction focuses young readers to inform them about historical and significant cultural events in history, but to do in a way that is comfortable for readers in this age group. One Crazy Summer is a good example of young adult literature of highlighting cultural/historical events and entertaining to its audience. Two characteristics that make this a great novel for middle school readers is that 1- It encourages further inquiry( historical) and 2-The situations and characters are relatable (Y/A novel).
The poem's structure consists of four stanzas. The first, second, and third stanza follow an abcc rhyme scheme, and the last stanza follows an aabb rhyme scheme. A the reader progresses through each stanza, it is seen that the narrator's dissatisfaction of her confinement
I read the novel, Two Summers, by Aimee Friedman. The genre of this novel is realistic fiction. The genre is realistic fiction because the events that take place in the book are believable. The main character in the book, Summer Everett, has divorced parents and problems with her best friend. Both of those things happen in the real world today.
The poem sits easily on a page and is visually satisfying, although this is in part due to the visual rhymes previously mentioned. This appearance though is false as the poems content is analysed but reinforces the theme of appearance and reality in the 4th stanza. Again, the "controlled" use of structure can be seen as adding to the poems "passion" showing a masterful combination of the two. The repetition of and permutations on the line: "my heart is breaking for a little love" is another structure that reinforces the poems meaning and show the despair that the poem communicates. The move away from the 1st person in the last two stanzas serves to provide a different perspective on the emotions discussed allowing a broader view than if the whole poem was in the first person, again this use of structure emphasises the underlying emotions.
All Summer in A Day by Ray Bradbury is about how a little jealousy can turn into rage and reveals that children, along with adults, can be blinded by something so simple.The author of All Summer in A Day believes jealousy and bullying are the key emotions played in this short story. Bradbury claims that the main characters, Margot, is being bullied because she was Earth longer. Whereas, the other students don’t even remember Earth because of how early they all moved to Venus. When Margot arrives, she was four. The other children had arrived two years before. The author describes her as “a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the
Imagine loving a stranger but knowing you’re unable to be with them, Dana Gioia perfectly shows this in his poem “Summer Storm”. As Gioia’s poem is read, one can conclude that the speaker feels a love towards a stranger and feels the love back for a moment. Unfortunately is unable to be with this person because nothing was pursued. One could conclude that the love is forbidden or our other person is unsure of who they want to be with or who they are. Gioia uses rhyming in his poem to help the readers gain a personal connection to it; he also uses end rhyming in the second and fourth rows of each stanza. Gioia uses enjambment as well, which can be viewed as a run-on sentence used in a poem. He uses tone in his poem, which allows the reader to feel the pain of the speaker as he goes through a heart-wrenching experience, but also experience the feeling of a short relief as the speaker experiences someone having interest in him. When one finishes the poem one can identify that the speaker is also the author.
For example, end rhymes in the poem alternate lines with very few variations, implementing frequently repeated, and alarmingly simplistic rhyming words such as: "Lee," "sea," "me," and "we."
