Superheroes In The Incredibles

The Incredibles is a 2004 animated film produced by Pixar Studios. It takes place in a superhero-filled world in the 1960’s. The film follows former superheroes, Bob and Helen Parr, as well as their super-powered children. The film breaks from the convention of the genre through its focus on the consequence of hero-work, the subversion of the typical protagonist and its lack of source material.
Often in superhero films, heroes are able to tear up whole cities in the pursuit of stopping a villain with next to no repercussions resulting from the property damage they caused; this type of careless display of destruction was shown in such films as The Avengers (2012), and was most notably criticized in 2013’s Man of Steel. He hears the ticking of a bomb coming from the walls; bursting through them is the criminal, Bon Voyage, robbing a bank. As he is confronting him, Buddy appears, and excitingly comes up to Mr. Incredible to tell him about his rocket boots that he made; he tells him to go home once again. Buddy says he knows he’s meant to be his ward. Mr. Incredible tells him he’s going too far, and Buddy claims he only dismisses him because he doesn’t have powers. Buddy says all superheroes don’t need to have powers as he invented his rocket boots himself. He tries to prove himself by contacting the police, but Bon Voyage attaches a bomb to his cape, and Mr. Incredible has to go after him as he flies away. The bomb ultimately drops onto the train tracks and blows part of it up. Mr. Incredible stops the oncoming train from falling off the tracks. He later gives Buddy up to the police and tells them to take him home. His consistent dismissal of Buddy led him to resent Mr. Incredible and, ultimately, to his turn as the main villain. Moreover, his actions of saving the man falling from the building resulted in a lawsuit against him, as the man was attempting suicide and didn’t want to be saved, and is now injured; and considering the …show more content…

After the events of the opening sequence, it cuts to 15 years later, as they are no longer allowed to use their superpowers, Bob is working at a mundane office job and Helen (formerly Elastigirl) is at home taking care of their children. Heroes are often shown as younger and physically fit, not middle-aged and married; even in films where they follow a more mature hero, such as Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008), and subsequent films; he is still a childless bachelor. Centering the film on characters in this phase of life brings an interesting perspective on what it would be like to juggle a family and superhero work. Moreover, unlike other superhero teams, which may position the team as coming together to form familial-like relationship through their shared super-powered abilities, as in X-Men (2000), or through an organization like Avengers (2012), The Incredibles has the superhero “team” as an actual family.
