Surgical Technologist

The operating room is well lit and is a sterile environment. The surgical tech can expect to be standing for long periods of time, depending on the surgery being performed. They usually work a minimum of forty hours a week and it can be either days or nights. They may be on call for emergency surgeries depending on the environment they chose to work in (AST, 2014, pp 3-26).

Surgical technologists, aka surgical techs, assist in surgical operations alongside the surgeon, surgical nurses, and other assistants. Surgical techs help in the operating room by setting up equipment, assisting surgeons during the operations, counting supplies before a surgery, sterilizing tools and instruments used in operation, and maintaining a clean environment. Surgical techs also prepare patients for surgery by washing and cleaning the incision site and sometimes transporting the patients to and from the operating room. You are responsible for making sure the operating room is set up the way the surgeon likes and needs it to be. You are also responsible for making sure that all the tools, operating table, and every inch of the room is cleaned and sterilized. Surgical technicians are the ones who keep track of “lap pads” or laparotomy pads used during surgery to soak up excess fluid in the patient. So, everything must be accounted for before, during and after surgery. They are also the people who hand the surgeons the tools they call out. With all responsibility, you have to know how to think for yourself if something were to happen and the surgeon takes a second to think during a tricky or time consuming surgery. For example, if a lap pad were to go missing, the surgical technician will be the one who is asked about it, and needed to recall the location of pad. Or the surgical technician has to make sure enough tools are at hand in the operating room readily available in case the team happens to run out. The job is very simple. Clean and move the room according to surgery and surgeon, keep track of everything, and hand the right tools when called out quickly. Seems simple. Which is why there is more than one surgical technician in the operating room. Natalie explained that she is ready and looking forward to the high stress environment that comes along with the job.

I have always believed that my success is defined by my happiness. This paper will discuss my personal goals as they apply to my education and career choice of Surgical Technician, as well as some of my strengths and weaknesses that will contribute to my success.

First Step is to graduate from a surgical technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Most of these programs take one to two years to complete. They combine classroom instruction in subjects such as anatomy, pharmacology and medical terminology with hands-on training in clinical settings.

There are many reasons to become a surgical technologist, and numerous information reasons why I want to take this course. Taking this class made me see a whole other side of the profession then when I was doing my research. I have learned so much about the changes in medicine and about surgical technology itself that it’s hard for me to put in all in one paper. Through the course of this paper I will go over my own reasons to take the course, things that I personally learned over the last eight weeks, what my plans for the future are, and the different qualities that are needed in the field.

One may object that surgical technologist does not perform direct patient care and that they are expected to work under the guidance and responsibility of the perioperative nurse, so there is no need for regulation and need for certification. This is in some extent untrue as every surgery in today's operating rooms is performed in unison by a team of highly skilled and dedicated medical professionals and part of that team is the surgical technologist. The first rule of becoming a surgical technologist is to have nerves of steel, not actually steel, but close. One of the best things a surgical technician can do is stay cool in the operating room, and not getting overwhelmed at all the unpleasant things in sight. I believe the continued development and use of surgical robots will eventually eradicate the need for surgical technologists. If there are robots that are capable of performing surgery under the direction of a surgeon I do not know why there wouldn't be robots to perform the role of a surgical technologist. This could potentially be better for the patient as there would be decreased infections rates with no direct human interaction. However, I do not know that I would personally ever want a machine to be working on or near me without being controlled by a person. Surgical Technologists have an important role in the operation room (OR). There are different positions within the Surgical Technology field, including Scrub Surgical Technologist, Circulating Surgical Technologist, and Second Assisting Technologist. Scrub Surgical Technologists have a number of tasks, including prepping the patient for surgery, sterilizing the OR, gown and glove surgeons and assistants, and assists the surgeon and other surgical team members in a number of ways, such as passing instruments and dressing wounds. A certified surgical technologist is the missing vital part of that circle of renowned, competent and caring surgical team that patients place their trust before going under anesthesia.

There are many careers in the health sciences field that are very intriguing, while there are some that do not seem appealing at all. Three of these careers are physician assistant, radiologist, and surgeon. Three careers that do not appeal to my likings are dentists, health educators, and home health aide. Technologists assist the radiologist during specific procedures and lastly and most importantly they assist the patients while in his or her care because the patient is the most important person in the hospital.
