Becoming a surgical technologist require a lot of dedication and tolerance, whether it's standing on your feet for hours or just simply preparing a patient for surgery. A surgical technologist is a person who helps to prepare an operating room by setting up sterile surgical instruments, equipment and supplies, such as drapes, gowns, gloves, suction tubing, and receiving solutions and medications from a circulator (jeff.org) Surgical technologist also ensure all technology used in the operating room is working properly. This is because many future nurses change what field they wanted to go into to originally, in this case becoming a registered nurse would be a much safer option although their is more schooling. Surgical technology education includes courses in anatomy, biology, medical terminology, pharmacology and other topics (aimseducation.edu). Surgical technologist are also trained in the care and safety of patients, sterilization techniques. Examples such as, how to set up a technical or robotic equipment, and preventing and controlling infections. Certification can be beneficial in finding a job as a surgical technologist or anything in the nursing field in that fact. Certification through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, this title allows the use of the title CST or “ Certified Surgical Technologist”. This specific type of certification typically requires completing an accredited formal education program and passing an exam. Another certification that could be helpful in finding a job would be National Center for Competency Testing, this allows to use of the title “Tech in Surgery”. For an example if working at the hospital they will most likely require to work at least one holiday, some weekends, or to simply be on call during nights. Being on call during nights simply means if the hospital receives an emergency surgery in the middle of the night, the hospital will require whoever is on call to come in no matter what hour it is. Being on call may sound terrible, but the hospital is required to pay overtime if called in, and up to eight dollars an hour for just having a phone on. Many surgical technicians say this is the most thrilling part of the job. Most surgical technicians work full time, but are never doing the same thing each day.
