In Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence”, King asserts that the war in Vietnam is a “symptom” (7) of a much larger disease that affects the “American spirit” (7). The disease King mentions is causing destruction where ever it is found, and in the case of the Vietnam war, it has led to their oppression and the death of people. In the section, Strange Liberators, King states, “They move sadly and apathetically as we heard them off the land of their fathers into concentration camps where minimal social needs are rarely met. They know they must move or be destroyed by our bombs” (8). King believed that the disease was leading the United States to take drastic actions against the Vietnamese people. The U.S.

Susan B. Anthony, a women’s rights supporter, knew exactly what she believed in. She stood firm for herself and her beliefs. She felt the need to represent other women in fighting for their rights. She fought for women by campaigning for women’s rights all around the nation. When male members of the movement refused to let her speak at rallies, simply because she was a woman, she realized that women had to win the right to speak in public and to vote

First and foremost, the fight for women’s rights is something that has occurred throughout time not only in the United States, but in every part of the world. When it comes to the United States, one cannot deny that it was an important historical event. “The struggle for women’s suffrage in the United States had occupied better part of a century” (Source 1). Truly a struggle, for it was not acknowledged by men in the past, primarily white man who had full rights in the nation. Susan B. Susan B. Anthony is a credible feminist, reason being, she is a female that has first handedly experienced deprivation of her rights as a U.S. citizen. Racism has always been a major problem in America. However, it was known to be the most problematic in the late 1950s. On August 28 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his infamous speech “I Have a Dream” to America. His dream highlighted the injustices of segregation and discrimination of African Americans that took place in this nation every single day. Dr. King inspired thousands despite the color of their skin, to take a stance against racism, with his powerful way with words. In his speech MLK efficaciously uses, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos by using allusions, developing credibility, in his speech to persuade all Americans to be aware of the problems with racism.

“It took 400 years after the declaration of independence was signed and 50 years after black men were given voting rights before women were treated as full American citizens and able to vote.” A women named Susan B. Anthony was one of those women struggling to be the same as mankind. Susan B. Anthony worked helped form women’s way to the 19th amendment. Anthony was denied an opportunity to speak at a convention because she was a woman. She then realized that no one would take females seriously unless they had the right to vote. Soon after that she became the founder of the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. In 1872, she voted in the presidential election illegally and then arrested with a hundred dollar fine she never paid.” I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand.”(Anthony) When Susan B. Anthony’s On Woman’s Right to Suffrage, she played a role in defying conformity because she decided to vote and to explain to everyone why she had every right to. Her response to not being allowed to vote was “ It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union.” During this period, only wealthy , white men could vote, not women or anyone of a different race. Chisholm starts off strong by using logos as her first persuasive technique. This is important because, starting off with logical thinking sets the tone as a serious manner. She addresses the speaker at the House Joint Resolution with confidence. In her speech she explains that the discrimination against women based on sex alone is so common that people think it is normal and natural to do so. In Farber’s book he explains these issues as fixed gender roles, where men would work and women would have motherly duties or wife duties. Shirley Chisholm also says “ the Constitution guarantees due process of law in the 5th and 14th amendment, but the applicability of due process of sex distinctions is not clear.” Which means all legal proceedings will be fair and reasonable. However, women are not able to be chosen for some juries, women also receive higher penalties for the same crimes committed by man. Which helped the two women to go around and produced The Revolution, a weekly publication that lobbied for women’s rights.She also went on saying that if women ever wanted to get reaction men had…only thing stopping them,..having voting rights. Anthony demanded women have a voice across multiple spheres and independence in their personal, economic, and political lives. She believed that suffrage was the ultimate expression of women truly being citizens. Her work inspired thousands of women to fight for suffrage through her social action, which eventually resulted in the 19th amendment. Without Susan B. Anthony’s many contributions, and the influences following her suffrage efforts, women would not have achieved the right to vote in 1920.

The fight for women’s suffrage went on for about seventy years. Crazy right? In the early 1800’s, women were considered second class citizens. The role that we see women have to was not nearly as close to the roll they had back then. A woman’s place was to be at home, baring children, taking care of the family and the home. They were not allowed to have any interest in anything but home and family; nor were they encouraged to pursue a career or have an education. Many women did not even have the right to own property. Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was written and delivered on August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and remains one of the most historically influential and world-changing speeches of all time. Fifty-two years later, this speech is considered to be one of the best persuasive speeches ever delivered. Dr. King is not only attempting to persuade his audience to understand the plight of minorities in the United States, but he is also attempting to encourage a nation to change for the betterment of mankind. Through the effective use of several literary elements, Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech prompted Caucasian Americans to look closer at the country 's dismal record of civil rights for black Americans and other minorities.

August 28th, 1963, 250,000 marchers stood in front of the Washington Monument to hear a message. A message from the leader of the civil rights leader whom many of the marchers have come to respect and follow. Marchers from all different backgrounds all supporting the civil rights and jobs for the African American community. Martin Luther King Jr. took the podium in front of these marchers and spoke a message that would inspire not just those present, but all of America to have a dream just like his. A dream in a country that has been stacking the cards against them for a couple hundred years. King took the podium and spoke of his dream, “… a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”” (King npg.). King’s speech resonated with thousands of African Americans and inspired them to dream his dream and start a movement that would lead them their civil rights.
