Love Isn’t Meant to Hurt Have you ever wondered what happened to the love a marriage once had? Or maybe why the marriage became unsuccessful? Marriage is the sacred union between individuals, particularly between a man and a woman. It always has been a life changing occasion for the couple. When the couple decides to get married, they are taking a permanent commitment between themselves and to their God. But what happens when the commitment takes a wrong turn and the relationship begins to consist of abuse? Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston takes a look into the secrecies and struggles of marriage, especially in the mid-1920s when marriage had somewhat different meaning than it does today. Within this short story, the problems of marriage are demonstrated through symbolism, imagery and the language and dialect that is used. Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston was written in 1926. During the 1920’s, the prohibition had just been put into effect and it was not uncommon to see segregation being practiced everywhere. Due to her skin color, I believe that Zora encountered racism at multiple times and those experiences were fed into her writing. Specifically, as for the average household, it was a time of a strong patriarch. The men would run the households and the women were expected to care for the children as well as maintain the house. That was their “jobs”. The way that women were treated during that time period is definitely shown inside this short story and the “soul” of colored women
