In the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald includes multiple colors to describe the characters and the places. Not only does he uses the colors just for appearance, or to add detail, but to symbolize emotion and ideas. For example, the color blue represents tranquility, the ocean, weakness, fantasy, loneliness, or royalty. When we first meet George Wilson he was seen as this old men with very little amount of hope. To quote, “When he saw us, a damp gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes” (Fitzgerald 25). Since his eyes were described as “light blue”. Light blue is basically a mix of blue and white. Utilizing this to describe Wilson, illustrates that he is a man that has been beaten down, while attaining a submissive attitude. …show more content…

Reality is basically everything is that is actually true. These two ideas collide because illusion is a false image of reality. Fitzgerald include a variety of illusion vs reality conflicts to describe his characters. To start off, Meyer Wolfsheim had come into a huge amount of money because the Black Sox Scandal. To add on, “Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he’s a gambler.” Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly: “He’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919.” (Fitzgerald 73). The reality is baseball being a fair game, but the players were paid to lose the game. Thus, the illusion that baseball can be swindled over by cash. Sadly, Meyer was one of those who benefit from this scandal, and scamming those who see baseball as fair. In a similar manner, Tom Buchanan also views himself above everyone else. The illusion is him displaying himself as a powerful man because of his wealth. “His speaking voice, a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed. There was a touch of paternal contempt in it, even toward people he liked-and there were me at New Haven who hated his guts.” (Fitzgerald 7). Tom has come to reality that he has the ability to tell people what they should act like even if he inherited his. Honestly, Tom inherited that money so he shouldn’t be displaying this behavior.
