The reality is baseball being a fair game, but the players were paid to lose the game. Thus, the illusion that baseball can be swindled over by cash. Sadly, Meyer was one of those who benefit from this scandal, and scamming those who see baseball as fair. In a similar manner, Tom Buchanan also views himself above everyone else. The illusion is him displaying himself as a powerful man because of his wealth. “His speaking voice, a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed. There was a touch of paternal contempt in it, even toward people he liked-and there were me at New Haven who hated his guts.” (Fitzgerald 7). F. Scott Fitzgerald presents multiple themes and characters that have an overlaying façade that they portray throughout the novel. Fitzgerald’s main representation of illusion is with James Gatz or Jay Gatsby as he is known in the time covered in the novel. Gatsby can also be considered to be the embodiment of illusion within the novel.
A major theme in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is the differentiation between reality and illusion. Fitzgerald presents a world of spectacle, splendor, and illusion, set against the backdrop of a more practical, nitty-gritty reality ruled by traditional societal expectations. In her article “The Idea of Order in West Egg,” Susan Resneck Parr argues that the illusions within the book are self-made by the characters, and these illusions are what inherently drives the plot. She specifically pinpoints three characters - Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy - who respond to challenges in the novel by creating such illusions. She writes: All three also respond in the same way, by turning - deliberately and with full awareness - to illusions that they know to be illusions
“‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” (Fitzgerald 1). Illusion and fantasy dominate The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. They are essential to narration, setting and characterisation in the novel. Nick Caraway’s narration is conflicted between a realistic point of view and a fantastical point of view throughout the novel. In the first chapter, Nick states his family are descended from ‘the Dukes of Bccleuch’ but later confirms his family actually own ‘a wholesale hardware business’. This suggests Nick changes fact to create the illusion that he is from a more privileged background. This implies his character is insecure and feels he has to fabricate the truth in order to come across a certain way to the reader. Many characters in the novel such as Gatsby and Myrtle prove to have similar attributes. These characters feel a sense of entitlement and fabricate the truth in order to seem from a higher class. The theme of illusion is used by the characters to hide aspects of their lives and lead other characters astray.
“There is no logical way to the discovery of these elemental laws. There is only the way of intuition, which is helped by a feeling for the order lying behind appearance.” Said Albert Einstein about the relationship between appearance and reality. Einstein is telling the readers that people are discovering new things that were hidden behind illusions of what had appeared. Humans have to use hat feeling to see threw those appearances to discover the elements that form the reality they live in. Scott Fitzgerald uses the creation of illusive appearance but also writes a discoverable reality for the most of the characters in his novels. In his novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates a strong relationship between the illusion of appearance
