One of the symbolic representations in Real Women Have Curves is a scene in the sweat shop where they are very hot and take off their out clothes and compare cellulite. This is a way for the director to convey that everyone should be ok with their bodies. Anna and her mother are at a restaurant and she tells her not to eat the flan it has too much sugar. It’s very funny because Anna’s mother tells her she wants a grandchild and if she lost weight she could find a man. Anna eats the flan in defiance of her mother. One of the symbolic representations in the movie Selena is the music itself. Selena’s father tries to get her into a style of Latino music that is inherently dominated by men. Selena’s father continues to push her till she succeeds
This essay will be discussing how gender is portrayed in the films Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother) and Tacones Lejanos (High Heels), both directed by Pedro Almodóvar. The use of the theatre and performance, along with the audiences that come with it, enables these films to explore the manner in which gender is unstable. Gwynne Edwards writes that Almodóvar often pays tribute to the stage . Almodóvar dedicates All About My Mother “to all the actresses who have played actresses, to all women who act, to men who act and become women” , which is also relevant to High Heels. He uses the stage setting as a platform to show the instability of gender, not only on a physical stage but also in the characters’ lives: “The dialogue of his films has the cut and thrust, and very often wit, of stage plays. There are also soliloquies, and one of them – in All About My Mother – is even delivered to the audience from the stage of a theatre” . Russell Jackson suggests that this is done as a method for the characters to “find the sometimes onerous ability to deal with and describe their past, and to create a future in the face of death and desertion.” The character ‘La Agrado’ in All About My Mother as well High Heels’ Femme Letal (Letal), will be considered - both the manner in which they carry themselves throughout the film, as well as the their performances on stage. In the following paragraphs, I will illustrate how performance and the stage are vital in Almodóvar’s exploration
The acts of feminism are demonstrated through the typical characteristics of a woman in the Mexican revolution, the females tend towards the male characters to satisfy their male desire and to control and calm themselves, and the family values that suppress the woman’s achievement. In the era of Mexican Revolution, the society believed that women should do all the chores of the house, especially cooking. Females were not able to raise their voice and provide their judgment. Women in this book are portrayed as they are dependent on men and do not possess confidence. Although women are considered weak, they are being oppressed and disrespected by the tradition that is being followed. Female characters in this novel exemplify the women in the society who are restricted because they were born women. Therefore, as stated by Louisa May Alcott, women in the society shouldn’t oppress and create boundaries for themselves, but should act steadily towards achieving their goal of freedom and women’s rights over the
The traditional effeminate characteristics portrayed within the psyche of many female characters introduced in ‘’La Reina del Sur’’ not excluding Teresa first presented in Sinaloa, revolve around their physique and nature, with the outcomes of the female characters often being defined relative to the impact of the male ‘’hero’’. This issue more often than not leads to female characters being silent, mistreated, oppressed and/or rescued, perfectly captured through a genuine statement made by the protagonist’s first love El Güero Dávila as he unknowingly encapsulates the insignificance of women caught in the narco world ‘’ Porque, si a mí me va muy bien, tí tambíen pero, si me va mal, es requete gacho’’. Even though El Güero spoke about Teresa from nowhere but a place of love, much of what he had to say completely disregarded her life and opinion. While the telenovela travels through Mexican, Spanish, Moroccan, Russian and Colombian cultures the prejudices faced by women are unchanging. The lives of women within the narco world can in no way dictate the lives of the men. Considering this, the emergence of Teresa as the telenovela develops and her complete ignorance of the traditional culture sets up the story to not only be considered an entertaining thriller but a means of tackling cultural flaws that have been seen for
In fact, she did not even care. It seems has if having losing her virginity was something simple as changing a pair of socks. Furthermore, in Josefina Lopez’s film “Real Women Have Curves,” she portrays the concept of sex and virginity in two opposite views as Sandra Cisneros did. Firstly, Ana’s mother have an idea of sex as something to be practiced only if married. On the other hand, Ana seems as the young girl who actually does not even matter about having sex since for her losing her virginity is not all that cares in a woman
Frida Kahlo is one of the definitive Latina women in the history of the world. Her image and art are synonymous with the Latin American experience and she is an inspiration to many Latin Americans today. Her life and image have been co-opted by so many people over the years after her death that her life has become a post-modern cultural icon. If you look at Frida’s life, she can be whatever you want her to be. She can be seen as an inspirational artist, Diego Rivera’s wife, a revolutionary, a communist, a Mexican role model, feminist queen, etc. the list goes on and on. In this way, she reminds me of Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe can be interpreted in many ways as well such as sex symbol, actress, model, fashion and glamour muse, etc. Marilyn Monroe is the Western societal representation of perfection in a woman but Frida Kahlo is a representation of imperfect perfection. She was not traditionally pretty for a lot of reasons. Her body was severely disfigured by some unfortunate accidents and this hindered her ability to ever meet Western beauty standards (the ableism of Western beauty standards was alive and well even in the early 1900’s). Frida’s influence to feminists and people who study body image is how she related to life and how she thought of herself outside of traditional societal standards.
Events and influence about her physical state, her lack of ability to have children, her knowledge of nature and life and most of all her unsettled relationship with Diego. U Unluckily, most of her life events are unpleasant and most of them relate to Diego 's womanizing. Her paintings are evidence that disclose her inner emotions and thoughts at the time the painting was
The artwork I’m doing combining feminist and gender study analysis is, Ana Mendieta “Untitled” (Silueta series) circa 1973. I will address how the themes of the body, race, identity, and gender impact the psychological analysis. Mendieta used performance art, using her own body, in order to send her message which is a prominent part of a feminist artwork. In her work, Mendieta is lying with flowers distributed around her hiding body, which could represent her shift between moving from her homeland to the United States. Mendieta depicts in her pictures the spiritual and life elements that blossom all around us and the relation between how a woman’s body is close to nature. Within these pictures, it shows the femininity of a real woman and how
Women are seen powerless in many instances and Marilyn Frye details the accounts where women are viewed as second to men in “To see and Be Seen.” Frye uses a metaphysics approach to better understand how people come to power. She gives a metaphysical understanding of how the world has been determined by people of power, which throughout history has been men. Men have been in authority throughout history and have come up with society’s conceptual schema. Frye alludes to people in power don’t want to see people who are submissive. Men fit into the conceptual schema, women are excluded but are allowed in the schema in certain ways and lesbians are not included. Lesbians are seen as unnatural and are not recognized in the schema. Their perspective on society is not taken into account, whereas women are recognized but their own perspective on society is completely erased.
One may ask why does any of this matter? Why should I care about sexy prostitutes in video games? What’s the real harm in sexually objectifying women? When men use female NPCs as tools or commodities, their actions of doing so actually make them powerful. So these interactive actions highlights male heterosexual dominance, which simultaneously reinforcing the view that women’s primary role is to satisfy the desires of men.In fact, the negative impacts of sexual objectification have been studied extensively for years and the effects on people of all genders are quite astonishing and fearsome. Researchers found exposing to these negative portray of women would impact players’ perceptions and beliefs about real world women and encourage them to
Lady Gaga, an American singer songwriter, became widely known in 2009, after her single ‘Just Dance’ claimed the number one spot on song charts. Since then, she has released several number one songs, taken home 6 Grammy Awards, 13 MTV Music Video Awards, and sold over 160 million albums and singles worldwide. On June 18th, 2015, Lady Gaga received the first Contemporary Icon Award, created to recognize artists who have become an icon in pop culture (Curtis). With her overwhelming popularity, it is easy to see why Lady Gaga received this award. She represents the rebelliousness of today’s youth in her wild outfits and is a leader in the fight for gay rights.
This portrayal is the typical stereotype of Latina women in todays society where they are simply known as the baby mamas. I don’t think the women were portrayed so well but maybe that was trying to relate to that time period back then as well where the women were kind of unwanted and always on the sidelines, where they never really knew what was going on and more like unnecessary characters. I think the creators of the play are trying to show how even the women with the biggest part in the play was unnecessary in that time period. Where as the other women with fewer lines were present just to add a backdrop or a more comic feel since they were not serious characters at
In 2007, a shocking ad was displayed starring model, Isabelle Caro. Caro's anorexic frame was splayed out, nude, for the world to see what she looked like. Despite her wish to recover from her ongoing battle with anorexia - Caro lost her battle at the age of 28. Shortly before her death, Caro published a book entitled The Little Girl Who Didn't Want to Get Fat. Caro is not the only sufferer of eating disorders as a result of body dissatisfaction - millions worldwide suffer as well.
The shapes and forms are unnatural and the whole painting is filled with disturbing images of deformed women. Moreover, the uncomfortable feeling the painting makes you feel as the three images in the center stares directly back at you. His use of that psychic line is uncanny and very disturbing and I can’t help but to feel I hate this painting. Picasso uses sharp angular shapes and forms with the neutral color black as it appears he painted the head of the woman’s image located on the top right hand corner of the canvas where it seems he blotted and smeared paint on the canvas to represent his meaning of deformity. Every other image is defined with geometric shape and this effect in my view causes the painting to be unbalanced. His use of the elements and principles were ignored or not present, he used shading that was irregular on his forms which caused the effect of confusion on where the direction of light was coming from. Patrick Frank writes, in Artforms, “Although some art historians decry this work’s negative depiction of women, viewers are challenged by the paintings hacked-out shapes and overall intensity” (401). This makes my point of if a painting has no meaning or a painting without a clear meaning to it will mostly lead to confusion and more time than not it will lead the viewer to a feeling of
Visual portrayals of females in mass media have been a focal point of discussion in scholarly articles and debates for more than five decades (Mager & Helgeson 2010).
When I listen to Selena's songs, I am in love with her music. Selena Quintanilla is a Mexican-American singer and a Queen of Tejano who was very popular around 1990s. She sang lyrics in Spanish and dancing in Latin Style that caught my attention. I really love her voice and it is way different from kurdish songs. I don't know Spanish, but I can feel her emotions. Selena knows how to catch someone's heart by singing and she can handle the crowd. My favorite song is "Dreaming of you" by Selena and it is pop ballard. In this song, there are English and little bit of Spanish that made it more beautiful. When I first listen to this song, it is playing in slow beat like a lonely girl who is thinking of someone. The song changed into moderate tempo and it tells me that she is dreaming of him, her lover. There is chorus that increase the mood and I can see a lonely girl kept looking her lover's picture and wanted to meet him soon because she missed him. My favorite part is when Selena switched to Spanish because she is Mexcian and wanted to show everyone that her culture is with her. At the end, the music fadely that gave me feeling of longing and somehow gave me a sad feeling. The main instruments that I heard is piano, wind chimes, and a bass. I just love how Selena can handle her vocal range and her music is filled with
