At some point in our lives, we encounter obstacles, problems and big changes in the way we live our lives. Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” tells the story of Gregor Samsa had not only undergone a big transformation physically, but also emotionally and mentally as an insect. Reading behind the lines uncovers hidden meanings, imagery, and symbols that may seem inconspicuous to a normal reader. The family gradually rejected Greg's new life as a Vermin. Once the family realized that Greg was no longer able to provide for their living, they found him useless and refused to care for him. The anger and shame Mr. Samsa has for his son can be evidenced by the force the apple was thrown at Gregor. Then the realization only struck Gregor when he was hit by the apple as thrown by his father Mr. Samsa, the collision brings forth this sudden realization within Gregor and his family, that could also be symbolized from the Bible, “by the apple Your eyes shall be opened" (Genesis 3:5, NIV). Gregor can already painfully see that his life has been completely changed, he no longer holds the position as the son; he is not useful because he cannot earn money anymore, he is just a gigantic vermin that is taking up space in the house. To the father, this can be similar to exile because he is leaving the comforts of his home and work. Furthermore, this apple becomes a realization to readers that the family did not really treat Gregor as their own son even before he became a Vermin. They failed to realize that Gregor has transformed from the son to the bank account. Before, the Samsa family does not see the metamorphosis because Gregor's physical appearance did not differ, but now "they were forced to take notice". I have chosen The Metamorphosis as my subject for this paper; I will take a close look at how the death of Gregor Samsa opens the doors to understanding the story. I will give examples of irony through Gregor’s metamorphosis and how this irony brings together the conclusion of the story. Through his death we see the truth behind his parents, which in it’s self is ironic. It is difficult to pinpoint one specific thing to write about in the story; there are just so many things that can be brought to light. If I happen to lose sight of my topic bear with me, there is just so much to be discussed in the novella.
“The Metamorphosis” is a surreal story by Franz Kafka surrounding the transformation and betrayal of Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one day, reborn into a large insect. Along with the bizarre and nightmarish appearance of his new hard back, brown segmented belly, and many legs, Gregor only desire is to live a normal life, unfortunately, this is impossible because he struggles to even get out of bed. Gregor transformation into an insect is a vivid metaphor for the alienation of humans from around the world. After losing human form, Gregor is automatically deprived of the right to be a part of society. Franz Kafka could relate to Gregor because he too was mistreated/neglected by his father and worked a job that he was unhappy doing. Franz and Gregor both were providers for their families. Alienation, isolation, and loneliness were not hard to recognize during the Modernity and Modernism time period.

On the surface, “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka is an evocative story of a man transformed into a “monstrous vermin”. It seems to focus on the dark transformation of the story’s protagonist, Gregor, but there is an equal and opposing transformation that happens within Gregor’s family. Although Gregor has physically changed at the beginning of the story, he remains relatively unchanged as the novella progresses. The family, on the other hand, is forced to drastically change how they support themselves. Although the change was unexpected, Gregor’s transformation into a vermin sets into motion a change in the Samsa family that leaves them better off in almost every facet of their lives. Thus, Kafka’s story is not one of descent into darkness, but one of a family’s ascent towards self-actualization. In Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” the character Gregor Samsa is transformed into a giant bug while he is sleeping. Although it is never said why he turns into an oversized insect, the characters never seem to wonder why or how this has happened. It is ironic that even after undergoing something dramatic and life changing as becoming a vermin, Gregor does not question his transformation; his reaction undermines the situation entirely. This interpretation allows the reader to gen-uinely understand the tale on an intense level that would not be able to be reached, otherwise. In order to gain true insight on the autobiographical approach to The Metamorphosis, a brief examination of his life is required; his thoughts, his beliefs, the acknowledgment of the cruel circumstances of his life, especially his home life, must be made clear that the anguish of his own world is the model for the themes in his stories.

Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis is a masterfully written novella about Gregor Samsa, a man who devotes his life to his family and work, for nothing in return. Only when he is transformed into a helpless beetle does he begin to develop a self-identity and understand the relationships around him. The underlying theme of The Metamorphosis is an existential one that says that any given choice will govern the later course of a person’s life and that a person has ultimate will over making choices. In this case, Gregor’s choices of his part in society cause him to have a lack of identity that has made him to be numb to everything around him.
