While reading and examining poems and plays it is imperative that one must understand the concepts behind how to correctly, efficiently, and strategically analyze and evaluate them. In order to accurately analyse and evaluate poems, plays, and songs readers must examine its words and phrasing from the perspectives of rhythm, sound, images, obvious meaning, and implied statements. Readers then must organize responses to the verse into a logical, point-by-point explanation. A fine commencement when analyzing and or evaluating poems and plays includes starting with some background information on the story in order to give it some context, followed by the major theme or focus in the composition along with an explanation. Primarily, a piece of …show more content…
He asks, Who Killed the Kennedys? / (Richard Keith, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger.) but later states, When after all / It was you and me / (Richard Keith, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger.). The statements recited by the Devil reveal that he knows something which society does not. This would be the brutal assassination of the thirty-fifth president of The United States, John F. Kennedy. The statements also unveil that the Devil knows the person that has assassinated the president, and in fact also took part in the assassination.” This quote from my poetry anthology STAR B is an example of how I had to learn and evaluate poems. Similarly, when absorbing information and composing a reader response about the play Twelfth Night I was able to further improve my analyzing and evaluating techniques. In order to do so, I had gone home and made extra notes regarding themes and characters in the play so that I would grasp a better understanding towards the main theme of gender concealment. In conclusion, having knowledge regarding how to compose a reader response or a poetry anthology may help one strive to become a more active and evaluative reader due to the many themes, different characters, and concealed themes that one must think outside of the box to observe.
Explain how one specific success criteria has helped you become a more active and critical reader: Create a poetry anthology of various poems writing an analysis and using different
“Once upon a time there was a wife and mother one too many times” (Godwin 39). This short story begins with the famous opening, once upon a time, which foreshadows that the story line will be similar to a fairy tale. It raises expectations for the story that all will be magical and end happily. A typical modern-day fairy tale is that of a distressed character who overcomes an obstacle, falls in love with prince charming, and they ride off into the sunset; living happily ever after never to be heard from again. Godwin however, puts an unexpected twist on “A Sorrowful Woman”. This short story is a tale about what can happen when everyday roles take over our identity. Ultimately, this short story challenges societal expectations of marriage
My English Literature major has helped me to achieve an outstanding level of appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of both American and British Literature. As a high school AP English student, I struggled through great works like Hamlet and To the Lighthouse. My teacher’s daily lectures (there was no such thing as class discussion) taught me merely to interpret the works as critics had in the past. I did not enjoy the reading or writing process. As a freshman at Loras, I was enrolled in the Critical Writing: Poetry class. For the first time since grade school, my writing ability was praised and the sharing of my ideas was encouraged by an enthusiastic and nurturing professor. Despite the difficulty of poetry, I enjoyed reading it.
In Sharron Olds’ poem “The Victims,” the bitter reality of a presumably abusive father conjures a disgusted attitude towards his presence. Upon growing up, the speaker recognizes the mother’s tendency to manipulate her independent thoughts into that of her own; thus, portraying the father as a deviant, despicable human being. However, the speaker evidently demonstrates a shift in perception from vividly displaying the pleasure taken by the failures of the father, to evolving a sense of compassion towards those who resemble the man she was taught to despise.
The 2016 census reported that 14% of the United States population was living below the poverty line. And sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures. Leading people to go as far as committing a crime just to feed their family. This was the theme of Cage The Elephant’s song, “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked,” written by Matt Schultz. In the song, Schultz utilizes personal experiences and an emotional appeal to address the issues of poverty to the upper classes and to justify how people in poverty or “the Wicked” handle their situation by the means of crime and immoral ways.
Poetry, what first comes to mind? If your anything like me, poetry can seem somewhat monotonous, rather like a locked door exclusive, complicated, and hard to understand. I think poetry tends to be a big game of “Guess what I’m thinking!” and I hate that game. I’m not a mind-reader. I think a lot of people who get excited about poetry are really pretentious. This possibly comes from believing that they actually can guess what other people are thinking. When we think poetry, we tend to know poetry by it’s traditional forms of having sonnets, ballads, often rhyming (but not always) and they tend to have a specific and symmetrical structure (APA). Throughout this essay I wanted to consider poetry through different explorations and how subverting the traditional conventions of poetry might be an effective way of engagement or in an opposing way of demotivating the reader.
John Nicholson Ireland(1879-1962) was a British composer who was consistently inspired by nature. He was born in Bowden, Cheshire, UK, and was orphaned by the time he was 15. Throughout his life, he frequently visited the Channel Islands where he was moved by the natural beauty. Rupert Brooke(1887-1915) was a poet, born in Rugby, Warwickshire, UK. Both Ireland and Brooke lived in the same time period, and were effected by the same historical events. Britain was knee deep in a world war for most of their adult lives. The war is known to have inspired some of Brooke’s most well known poems, but Spring Sorrow was neither mans most popular work.
The Medicine man is approached and will accept a turquoise stone if he agrees to take part and lead the ceremony. Choosing the Medicine man is usually a task of finding the most experienced one in the area, one who has performed the ceremony several times and knows the songs by heart. It is common for Medicine men to have many apprentices learning wishing to become Medicine men themselves. Another fact to consider in choosing a Medicine Man is familial or clan relationships. Again, the family approaches the Medicine man before dawn and draws a cross in cattail pollen on the palm of his right hand. Finally, a peer for the young girl is chosen to go through the ceremony with her. Usually, it is a family member who has recently gone through her
When reading a poem the readers job is to find the underlying message that lays in each line. There are times when you are able to see part of the message clearly. The rest of the message must be found through thorough analysis. Before doing an analysis one must understand the composition of a word. A word has three components: sound, denotation, and connotation.
My plan was to begin with the foundations of my literary study to sharpen my skills. This meant the introduction of how we read and what to look for also known as “close reading.” The Introduction to Reading Poetry with Mr.Pogue equipped me to understand the poets hidden persona and how to make sense of it. As this was a challenging course I believed I still wanted to embark on this journey. The Foundations of Literary study with Mrs.Barksdale-Shaw molded me to decipher all types of works. Literary works ranged from poems, music lyrics, and even plays. By the time I completed the
People are apt to learn new information, but it takes time, practice, and a good teacher, in order to do it correctly and to retain understanding. This poem shows the author’s (a teacher’s) frustration towards the elementary mistake that inexperienced readers or students make when poetry is first introduced. Unable to read the poem properly, they often do not capture a poem’s natural beauty and truth. The author says to observe a poem to see its true colors or its natural state (590; lines 1-5). He wants readers to search the “surface of the poem” to see a glimpse of the deeper side of the poem— to see its meaning and understand (lines 9-11). However, the author simply sees people rushing
Reading and analyzing poetry can be a very tricky thing to do. Poetry is filled with hidden meanings, as you read it is very important to stop as you go and think about the meaning of words, phrases, and the poem as a whole. It’s no joke when you said, “Helen Vendler is a poetic genius” the twelve steps that she created to help breakdown poems is a lifesaver. After using the twelve steps, which include; understanding the setting, getting a feel for the tone, looking at the repetitions that occur and the type of images the author uses, I was able to get a much better understanding and inside into the three poems we had the opportunity to read. For this specific assignment I decided to focus mainly on the poem “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a
The poet is disheartened with both the facts. He says that the soldier that fight, especially in the vanguard of the army, have funerals with the rejections of all rituals, for example, no flowers, no candles and not even their dead bodies. He concludes that first the soldiers are not sent but forced to fight in the war and then when they die their funeral is carried out for formality with no respect or even sympathy. He calls these rituals "mockeries" in a bitter and furious tone in the octet of the sonnet and the choruses "shrill, demented" and compares it to the falling of bullets of machine guns on the ground when he says "wailing shells"

The first line in the poem is a phrase that is found in Bible: 2 Thessalonians 2:7 “For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.” Which means the lawlessness, discrimination, and immoral is already working.” Lauryn Hill is rightly regarded as one of the most exciting and original talents of her generation. As singer, songwriter and rapper, she first came to prominence as a member of the hip-hop trio the Fugees, before launching a short-lived but impactful solo career. She is also regarded as one of music’s lost geniuses, avoiding the limelight and the studio to raise her five children with Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob. Right now, with a life that has involved no-shows at concerts and a prison sentence, it doesn’t look like she’ll be adding to her five Grammy awards”(The Biography.com website, 2017). The poem speaks about how messed up and crooked the court system are towards African Americans.
Demon Keys Our demons belong within or minds Belong to the longing of human error They dance under our skin, straining We want to be free, want to run without the burden But we're tied down, held by bonds Human bonds that threaten our individuality Each of us is no longer a creation of our soul
