The workforce in many parts of the world continues to comprise a multitude of diverse nationalities. Increasingly, organisations within the regions are relying on teams and teamworking in pursuit of performance improvement, while at the same time educational institutions are making increasing use of teamwork as a means for delivering education and learning. It is important, therefore, to understand the differing patterns of teamworking skills developed by workers from diverse backgrounds, as these will have a significant impact on workplace behaviour.
Hoegl & Gemuenden (2001) observed that the definition of teamwork is a social system including more than three people in an organization or context. These members identity others as one member of the team and they have the same goal. Robbins (2001) stated that the factors influencing teamwork are relation of leadership, roles, principles, status, size, composition and the power of agglomerate.
1. What is the one topic that really stood out to you in Chapter 9- Collaborating in Teams? Why? Chapter nine in our textbook addressed collaborating in teams. This chapter did an excellent job of informing the reader about several key elements pertaining to teamwork. Collaborating with children will be important because they are able to provide feedback on learning, give suggestion about what they are interested in learning, and create plans to execute learning. As the teacher I am giving my students the freedom to carry out their own learning within boundaries with me there to support them (Bredekamp, 2014). Collaborating with families is important as well because they are the experts on their child (Mcafee & Leong, 2007). I will do this by communicating clearly, honestly, and sensitively with each child’s family. When working with families I will look at them as an equal partner. Both the teacher and the family member(s) can provide information about the child that can tailor instruction to best suit their needs (Gonzalez-Mena, 2002). Communicating and working with other professionals will also an essential aspect of being a teacher. Other professionals will be able to bring insights about particular situations and provide ways to improve instruction, flow of classroom, and outcome of learning and/or behavior. Overall, to maintain all of these collaborative relationships it is essential to continue to reflect on what is working, what can be improved, and what the goals are we working towards (Sandall & Schwartz, 2002). One change I plan on incorporating in my classroom is having students report their findings within group activities. Specifically, designating someone from the group to go out and retrieve information from other groups in regards to their findings. Once that person has obtained the new information reporting it back to their group. In a Science classroom and laboratory, there is a significant emphasis on group collaboration. There are many common problems found in teams. A good leader will attempt to get to the bottom of those concerns, and will at times devise ways to create team building exercises. Development of team building programs should work to resolve the issues, and ultimately create an environment where the team members are working together more effectively, and actually introduce and improve problems together. These type programs are best put together in a way that is customized to the team, because of the many associated variables. Kerrie has used the team collaboration, with her senior management team in resolving the problem of cost reduction. They had meetings where they brainstormed on how they can formulate and choose the appropriate strategies to achieve the cost reduction goal of 15% by the end of the year. Evaluating a teams’ performance towards the end of any project is extremely crucial in terms of the overall team work effectiveness. From my perspective, our team SpecTech in general performed up to par. We did not get our desired performance results regarding our simulation, but we did indeed collaborated as a team with a collective mindset that helped us work as a team in an effective and efficient way.
