Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one’s life. Many different factors can cause suicide such as, bullying, mental disorders, or other complicated situations. Over the years, teen suicide ratings have been steadily increasing. For young people in the United States, suicide is ranked the second in the leading cause of death. Society needs to bring more awareness to this issue. There should be more awareness on how to identify suicidal people, the risk factors, and ways to prevent suicide attempts. Anyone can be suicidal, it just depends on their situations they are currently going through. People around a suicidal person may not know how to identify if that person is suicidal. Some of the statistics being 97 suicide attempts and 27% of it being before the age 21. LGBT+ youth are not type of people that can be consider suicidal. People who have anxiety or depression are some people who may be suicidal as well. If someone is unsure a person is suicidal it is best to talk to that person personally. Similarly, identifying the risk factors and warning signs in suicidal attempt and behavior is important. There are multiple risk factors and warning signs to look for in suicidal behavior such as, depression, someone talking about suicide, change in behavior and eating habits, someone being bullied, alcohol/drug substance use, or stress. For example, someone experiencing bullying in their environment, are likely to think about or act on suicidal behavior. The bullying can happen to them daily, and slowly the person being bully can begin to experience mood swings such as depression. Many people think that a lot has been done to prevent youth suicide. 2,415 teenagers have been committing suicide per year in the last 5 years (Hunter Institute of Mental Health, 2014). Most of them have done that due to psychological issues. Furthermore, bullying is also one of the causes that we should be focused on. In addition, technological developments make it easier for teenager to get bullied through the Internet and social media. I think people should be concerned about youth suicide rather than physical health only because it could be a silent killer to this generation. I don’t think that people have done enough to prevent youth suicide.
