Teenage Drinking and Driving "When I became an emergency medical technician, I never imagined I would see friends lying dead at the side of the highway. But one night in February last year, that's what happened," says 19-year-old Marian College freshman David Zittlow of Bonduel, Wisconsin. David had just gone to bed and ready to sleep after a long day of work. He was not expecting to get paged back to work. At that moment his pager had gone off notifying him that there was an accident near by. When he arrived at the scene he could not believe what his eyes were seeing (Saunders). Drinking and driving is one of the most dangerous things on the road and like said “suicide.” The group of people most affected by this is adolescents. Minors are most likely to do irrational things when alcohol is involved. The way alcohol works it can cause a bigger effect on teen brains more than adults. Alcohol ruins many young teenage lives and is now one of the most critical endangerment leading to accidents on the road. In an overall perspective, it is confusing for teenagers to understand the real dangers of alcohol. It is shown in many ways, but yet to be understood why it is not okay to drink and drive (Saunders). Alcohol interferes with judgment and upsets the brain (Kowalski). The younger the age, the more the problem turns into as they start to grow up. The major effect alcohol can have on a teenager has to do with the brain. It makes the process of brain development go slower, kills brain cells, and leads to alcoholism (Mokeyane). Alcohol is shown in magazines, books, movies, and commercials, all in a positive way. Teenagers seem to watch or read these things and think that alcohol is actually a good thing. Now when alcohol is involved adolescents seem to be confused why it is used to promote certain things, yet it has a negative impact on them when driving. Alcohol abuse upon juvenile people tends to have a threatening effect on their bodies. Some of the effects it has on a person's body are not as bad as others. The dangerous one can include a person thinking that they are not drunk when really they are impaired (Saunders). One major problem that has evolved because of teens drunk driving is car accidents. Every
Alcohol is harmful to the development of younger people. Research has shown that an adult is less likely to binge drink (have five or more drinks in a row). According to statistics from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, teens become intoxicated twice as fast as adults. Because the teens get drunk faster they
The article, “Alcohol can rewire the teenage brain,” starts by stating that more than 4,750 American kids aged 15 and younger, said they took their first drink of alcohol already. Kids who start drinking before the age of 15 are more likely to become alcoholics because they get addicted to the drug. The article also states that they are more likely to start binge drinking. A study conducted by Lorena Siqueira a pediatrician at the Florida International University and Nicklaus Children’s hospital in Miami, reported that, “When kids drink, they tend to do heavy drinking,” and that, “Their bodies are not ready to handle that kind of alcohol.” Teens think that alcohol will help them feel happier and better, but that is not true. Teens also drink
Driving while intoxicated persists to be a major problem amongst teenage drivers. Although there are many precautions taken in order to prevent this type of activity, whether by the school, media or parents’, teens proceed to place themselves into these very high risk situations. These persistent behaviors drive us to look further into why teens partake in this type of activity or better yet what and who is influencing this age group. As asked by the principal I will attempt to explain this behavior using several theories
Drunk driving is an issue that effects many people across our nation. People do not realize the affects alcohol can have on the body and mind that slow decision making while driving. This issue begins in the home. Children see their parents, or other adults figures, have a beer or a cocktail and get in the car. Thus, making it seem like it is acceptable to drink and drive. “One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime” (MADD).
Drinking and driving is one of the biggest social issues for teens across the United States. Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol is a very dangerous thing no matter what age you are. However, teens do not think about the consequences of drinking and driving until it is already too late. Many things contribute to this growing problem of teen drinking and driving. First, there is a lack of education about drinking and driving in schools today. Next, peer pressure is difficult for many teens to resist. Finally, the access that teens have to alcohol and to vehicles is not monitored. According to blah blah study, 000% of high school students admit
Every 51 minutes in America, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash. A dangerous issue facing society today is the problem of teen drinking and driving. Currently an approximate of 10,076 people die in drunk driving crashes per year. If positive progress to ceasing this act does not happen, teens will continue to drink and drive putting everybody on the road at risk. Teens who drink and drive put everyone on the road at risk, causing serious crashes that could be preventable.
The first group will be tested for the effectiveness of a positive advertisement within an academic setting. The advertisement, shown in Appendix A, will be placed around the university setting where the participants will be asked to meet the researchers. The researchers will ask the students to walk around and read the many different positive advertisements while consuming one to two provided alcoholic beverages. The advertisements placed within this setting are priming the students about drinking and driving. After an hour within this
Another concern is the behavior of adolescent binge drinkers. In other research it is shown that binge drinkers were more likely to engage in risky driving, such as speeding, running yellow lights, racing other cars, and passing in no passing lanes (Marcotte, T. D., Bekman, N. M., Meyer, R. A., & Brown, S. A. (2012). They also participate more in distractive activities that take their focus away from the road such as changing the station or music on the car stereo system and texting or dialing on their cell phones. In order to reduce the fatalities associated with adolescents and driving under the influence, Graduate Driver Licensing has been implemented in several U.S. States. With the use of Graduated Driver Licensing this would help lower the percentage of fatal crashes by way of new drivers being required to
One major problem with teens and alcohol is death. Many teenagers go to parties and drive home thinking that everything is all right, but ?twenty- one percent of young drivers involved in fatal crashes have been drinking? (MADD 1). On a normal weekend, an average of one teenager dies in a car crash every hour, and nearly fifty percent of these crashes were involved with alcohol. ?Uses of alcohol and other drugs are associated with the leading causes of death and injury among teenagers and young adults? (NCADD 1). Not only do car wrecks kill teenagers, so does compulsive
Approximately one million people are injured in alcohol-related traffic crashes every year and young people, ages 16 to 24 are involved in 28% of those alcohol-related driving accidents, although they make up only 14% of the U.S. population. On any given weekend evening, one in 10 drivers on America's roads has been drinking and according to the latest statistics, in a family of five the prospect of you or someone in your family being involved in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident in their lifetime, is an astounding 200 percent. That's a lot of tragic, meaningless deaths that could actually have been avoided.
Young teenagers are drinking and driving which by doing so can put someone's life in danger.
Drinking and Driving is a huge problem for teen drivers because they are over represented in drunken driving incidents. Teen drivers are often inexperienced drivers. They also have no sense of invincibility and immortality. In addition, teens are more susceptible to be pressured in participating in illegal acts which may impair their driving abilities. Driving drunk not only shortens your reaction time, but it also affects your coordination, and your ability to use proper reasoning.
Teenage drinking and driving causes thousands of preventable deaths every year and seriously injures thousands more people.Teen drunk driving is a serious problem for the teens who are drinking, for their passengers, and for other people on the road. There are some concerning statistics about teenage drinking and driving:
Alcohol is the most widely used drug among youth. It causes serious and potentially life-threatening problems for this population. Research indicates that drinking is associated with risk-taking and sensation-seeking behavior among adolescents. Alcohol has disinhibiting effects that may increase the likelihood of unsafe activities. In 1997, 21 percent of the young drivers 15 to 20 years old who were killed in crashes were intoxicated. For young drivers, alcohol involvement is higher among males than among females. In 1997, 25 percent of the young male drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking at the time of the crash, compared with 12 percent of the young female drivers
Alcohol has been severely damaging young individuals health both mentally and physically. Even though alcohol can be harmful at any age it is especially dangerous for teens as their brains are still developing and cannot cope with alcohol the same way as an adult can. When consumed
