The age that I have chosen to study for this essay is teenagers. The reason for this is because so many remarkable things happen during the teenage years and these things vary from culture to culture. To be a teenager is to be in a time of fluctuation and more often than not in western society, a time of rebellion. There are certain rituals that take place during the teens such as socializing with friends in a place other than school, more responsibilities around the house and less juvenile relationships with members of the opposite sex. After the 1900’s reformers, educators, and legislators began to separate teens from adults and children. The legal system created Juvenile courts. State and federal governments provided legislation to state the minimum age requirements for sex, marriage, school attendance, and work. They later changed it for voting, driving, and drinking alcohol. These were often very inconsistent; some legislation further divided teens by gender. Girls, for example, could marry younger than boys, but could not legally consent to sexual activity until later. The dramatic rise in high school attendance was the single most important factor in creating teenage culture. Over one hundred years later, in 2009, teenagers are impossible to avoid. There are more teenagers than ever before and their cultural presence is utterly indisputable. Many sub-cultures exist within this phase such as Chavs, Emo’s and Goths. They exist not only as students but as highly regarded consumers, and are also widely looked to as trendsetters in fashion, music, and film. The media has unforgivably preyed on teenagers. With more advertising focused on grabbing the attention of these young people, the competition is so fierce that they resort to highly absurd adverts and slogans to have a chance of having a part this multi-million pound empire. Parents now days believe teens are misbehaving and not listening more so than teens in years past. However, kids in years past had more control and authority of their own life’s unlike today’s kids who have to rely on their parents. Adults now days have complete authority over teens unlike teens in years past. Teens back in the day were able to find work at an early age and could choose whether or not they wanted to attend school. Adolescence describes the transitional stage in a teenager’s life, from childhood to adulthood, where an individual evolves physically, psychologically, emotionally, cognitively and socially. It is a defined social category that is expressed through immaturity and unpredictability and allows an individual to learn and discover their sense of self and identity. The idea of adolescence came into perspective after children were expected to take on adult roles as soon as they were mature enough to, going straight from puberty to adulthood.
