Television vs. Computers
by Ron Kaufman
"This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely light and wires in a box."
-- Television Journalist Edward R. Murrow in TV Guide, December, 1958
The Kill Your Television web site went online in its current form in August, 1995. Since that time, I have received lots of e-mail responses saying that television is really no better than computers. Some of the comments I 've received include:
"Please don 't take this the wrong way and I don 't mean to insult you, however, your web page KYTV is basically true, but couldn 't the same be said about the computer?"

"Dear Sir,
I wrote and spoke with you before. I would like you to include some of the information now coming forth regarding video games and children, since there is no other site of your caliber on the net, and people need access to this information. What is happening with the video games and children is far worse than what is happening with TV...since you cover one so nicely, could you please incorporate the other? Although I am not a parent, I really care about the minds of kids, and seeing that during their early years, they are somewhat protected."

"Computers are televisions too! Staring into a CRT, be it television shows or otherwise has a similar effect upon the
"Pediatrics for Parents"; the effects of video games on children: what parents need to know?
In our time period there is currently a battle that is happening, one that many people do not know of,and the enemy is; Video games.Violent video games are currently in the possession of millions of children, and these games are having a bad influence on them. Most people do not know this and do not know that the consequence could be dire. In the article “Violent video games are hurtful to our children” the author,Blagojevich Rod, says that we are currently engaged in a battle for the minds and souls of our children. That these violent video games are leading the children down the wrong path and have to be stopped.Rod uses violent diction and rhetorical appeals to get parents to intervene with children playing violent video games because while, these violent video games give children a misconception of moral value, video game manufactures turn a blind eye to this and make a profit and that has to stop.
MacNeil says, “ television discourages concentration.” It really does if you’re trying to get something done, it’s very distracting. He states, “almost anything in life interesting and rewarding requires applied effort.” It also encourages us to apply no effort at all. Television diverts us only
Television invented in the late year of 1927. One of the world’s greatest inventions, but just because TV is a great invention, doesn’t mean it’s always the best thing for the audience. Here are some pros, cons, and my opinion on TV.
Technology consumes the society Bradbury has created, and determines the behavior of the community he has created. The television consumes Mildred along with every other dependent conformist in their time. The people are so absorbed by the television that the families portrayed through the shows, that they are psychologically engulfed into the television families. Mildred even displays this when Bradbury writes, "Will you turn the parlor off?" He asked. "That's my family." "Will you turn it off for a sick man?" "I'll turn it down." (Bradbury 49) MIldred’s connections to her fabricated family is more important than her actual family. The subjugation of the television families is such a convoluted concept. This immense confusion is only sensibly comparable to one character, Chief Beatty. Beatty’s knowledge of literature is used to disprove the importance of literature to others. He is willing to defend the “equalization” of society while he is educated himself, and rejects the use of books as weapons while reading them whenever he pleases. Due to these contradicting concepts in his life, Beatty is the most convoluted and mysterious character in the novel.
Also, Television attacks more the unconsciousness rather than the consciousness. Hamill says that, similarly to drugs, television is a consciousness-altering instrument (64), but this is not true. First, television cannot do more than depictions of sensations. Hamill explains how television can provide several moods and scenarios with the simple touch of a button (64). He says so because he is looking for a proof to support the power over the mind that television is meant to have, but rather this shows how television works on the unconsciousness and how difficult it is to alter the
“Television is a gift of God and God will hold those who utilize his divine instrument accountable to him” -Philo T. Farnsworth. In the 1920’s life in America, and around the world, was blossoming with excitement and shock due to all the new things happening around them. For instance, women were re-imagining the rules of feminism, alcohol was being banned everywhere, secret clubs were being brought up, and also the television coming to life. The television had to be the most talked about thing in the 1920’s. All because a random guy decided he wanted to experiment with things and later created the television.
The author also states that television can discourage concentration. The article says, “Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort.” Television encourages people to apply no effort. It catches attention very easily. For example, if someone
1938 was the beginning of television. E.B. White said “I believe TV is going to be the test of the modern world, and in this new opportunity to see beyond the range of our vision, we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky. We shall stand or fall by TV, of that I am quite sure." We are now living in an age of electronics. Ninety-seven percent of all American homes have at least one TV (Why I do not have a TV?). Not just that, but most homes also contain laptops, tablets, and smartphones which allow additional viewing of media. Television started as an experiment and has now become a franchise. Even though that may seem like an achievement, as E.B White said “we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky”, and I personally feel that television is a disturbance to us all.
The ‘Golden Age of Television’ is what many refer to as the period between the 1950s and 60s when the television began to establish itself as a prevalent medium in the United States. In 1947, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and the Du Mont Network were the four main television networks that ran stations with regular programming taking place. (Television, 2003) While regular television programming was a new innovation, the television itself had been commercially available for over twenty years prior to the 50s. It was conceived by many worldly innovators and went through several testing stages before it was finally completed in the late twenties. The
I feel the effect that video games have on children has been a very topical and debatable subject since they were introduced in the 1970’s. I feel it is important because if video games were damaging for children most video game companies would lose their biggest fan base and it would be very damaging for an economy for example in 2012 the entertainment software industry added over 6.2 billion dollars to US GDP. In the US the computer game industry directly and indirectly employees more than 146,000 people. The average salary for direct employees is 94,747 dollars, resulting in a total national compensation of 4 billion dollars also direct employment grew at an annual rate of more than 13 times the growth of the U.S labor market (9% vs. 0.72%) between 2009 and 2012. Many people have researched this economic question and some have been very biased on both sides but this isn’t surprising when you look at the last social phenomenon rock-and-roll or the “devil’s music” to some. Any home that has access to video games (88% of households) I feel the parents will be conscious to how much their children play video games and the effect it has on them. So I have aimed for my research to help parents gain an insight to the effects of video games, signs to look out for and helpful recommendations if they are worried about
TV, more commonly known as ‘television’ is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. In ancient Greek tèle means ‘far', and in Latin visio means sight. From my perspective and many people of the world television has changed the way we live. Television has brought many amazing things, however nothing is perfect.
It could very well be true that over the past 20 years, television programming has developed in such a way as to demand more cognitive participation. However, watching TV is not the societal benefit Johnson makes it out to be. Johnson’s claim that TV is overall a beneficial societal force fails to account for the indirect effects of watching TV. It may be true that the cognitive demands of watching an episode of 24 do in fact stimulate brain function as opposed to diminish it. However, when a person sits down in front of the TV, he is choosing to do so instead of reading, studying, doing his homework, or exercising. These things are undisputedly beneficial to society. When one spends his time in front of the TV screen, it is time he is taking away from actually getting smarter.
“What is notable about this research, however, is that it is the kind of television that
What do we really mean by television? The way we watch television has drastically changed over the last fifteen years due to new technologies such as digital television and services providing on-demand access. These drastic changes have had a huge effect on viewers and have “allowed online streaming platforms to dominate and revolutionize the way the audience consumes” (Aliloupour) media, ultimately allowing the viewer to be in total control of how, when and where they want their content. The idea of only being able to watch television on a television set is now a thing of the past. Due to technology, the audience now has a vast variety of options on how they can access content. By using scholarly articles, research in new media and Internet sites I will be analyzing current television and where the future of television will be heading.
