From Terry Fox’s story, I learned: ‘Great things never came from comfort zones.’ If we want something we have never had, then we’ve got to do something we’ve never done. From quotation of Mae West: ‘You only live once but if you do it right, once is enough.’ I think Terry Fox has proven that it’s true. We have to take a risk and learn more about life.
Terry fox was a brave individual. At the young age of just 19, he found out he has cancer. Osteogenic sarcoma, a bone cancer which causes him to have his leg amputated to stop cancer from spreading just 3 days later.
In Canadian history there are many famous people. In my mind one really stands out among the rest. His name is Terry Fox and he is one of the greatest athlete to run on the face of this planet. Terry discovered he had cancer and then decided to run across Canada. He was a brave man who would take what the world through at him. Running across Canada was his way to show the world that he was not going out with out a fight.
Renowned American film producer Cecil B. DeMille once said, “What I have crossed out I didn't like. What I haven't crossed out I'm dissatisfied with.” (“Cecil B. DeMille Quotes.” brainyquote.com. Brainy Quote, n.d. Web. 05 Oct.2012.) This persistent feeling of dissatisfaction is suggested in Christopher Taggi’s “95,” in which the protagonist is discontent with his current life condition and keeps driving on the highway to look for better opportunities. In fact, the author points out that in contemporary society people are dissatisfied because of their insatiable desire for wanting more. This sad reality is illustrated by the protagonist’s
In Canadian history there are many famous people. In my mind Terry Fox is a real Canadian hero. He is a role model to everyone because he didn’t give up.
“In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” - Lewis Carroll. The quote discussed is Jack London “The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” In order to support this I will use evidence from articles and studies. I agree with Jack London’s claim that people should live not exist, and use their time wisely. I agree because risk taking actually has health benefits, people often take risks and then love the outcome and research has found risk taking can actually be eye-opening.
As Canada became progressively independent, as a country we went through certain events which defined us as who the majority of us are. These events, whether positive or negative have made a lasting impact on our country. Consider when the FLQ became an issue, leading into the October Crisis, the War Measures Act (temporarily) as well as the Canadian Charter Rights of Freedoms being put into place. An example of an overall, mostly positive impact was Terry Fox with the “Marathon of Hope” which he came close to completing before he unfortunately passed away.
Dedication originated from the Latin word dedicare in the 14th century, meaning to devote, or to commit one’s time and resources towards a task (Oxford Dictionary). Modern day usage of dedication is still applicable to the original definition, so little change has befallen the word. Despite also being associated with the Catholic church (to declare a church to be sacred), Oxford Dictionary defines the word as, “The quality of being committed to a task or purpose” (Oxford Dictionary). However, dedication’s definition in the modern world has expanded to include not only commitment, but also trivial amounts of focus onto a task, too little to be considered a true commitment. Although the general application of dedication is to be focus one’s time
The animal I was given for this assignment was the Channel Island Fox. They are considered to be near extinction animals with nearly about 2,500 fox left (last checked 2008). The Channel Island Fox is a type of fox that only lives on the Channel Islands, which is located around the coast of Southern California in about 19 to 61 miles away from the continental state. On a clear day in California, many visitors have the chance to see the islands over the shores. Within the eight islands, only six of the islands have the Channel Island Fox on their land. The six islands are San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Santa Catalina, San Nicolas and San Clemente. Each island has different features which has given each island fox a different trait compared to each one, but they are still considered as Island Fox.
In the book Foxcatcher, I could not help comparing Mark Schulz and me in terms of wrestling. I was a pretty good wrestler, but Mark Schultz became one of the best wrestlers of all time. He started his career later than me, he took losses harder than me, and he wrestled a different style compared to me.
Just watched the new Netflix documentary, "Team Foxcatcher", where I learned that wealthy wrestling sponsor, John DuPont, (who ended up murdering Olympian wrestler, Dave Schultz in '94) inexplicably fired all of the African American wrestlers off of his team when he suddenly developed an aversion to the color black. Yes, that's right, DuPont decided to ban all things black from his estate. First DuPont forbade people living on the estate from wearing any items of black clothing. He even forced one of his wrestlers to sell their sports car because it was black. DuPont himself, sold off all of his prized black thoroughbreds. If that wasn't crazy enough, he then fired all of the black wrestlers off of Team Foxcatcher. At the time, one of them
As human beings we are naturally wired to seek happiness wherever we can find it. When we don’t, we may enter a stage of anger, anxiety, or distress. That’s why it is our personal goal to look for happiness and preserve it once we acquire it. Many have explored ways to find what triggers this feeling of “happiness” and what we can do to keep it; nonetheless, the evidence found is hardly sufficient to make a public statement on how to find happiness. For this reason, most of the time we speculate what might provoke this feeling of contentment. “Happiness is a glass half empty,” an essay written by Oliver Burkeman, highlights the importance of happiness and discloses how we can find delight through unorthodox methods. The prime objective of this piece of writing is to inform the audience about the effect of happiness on their lives and how their usual attempts of becoming happier can sabotage achieving this feeling. Furthermore, he wants to promote the benefits of pessimism and describe how it can help us in the long run. The author utilizes pronouns, logos, and pathos in order to prove his point and draw the audience into his essay, in an attempt of making them reconsider the way they live their lives and adopt this new pessimistic way that would greatly boost their level of happiness.
Terry’s Dad is suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).First of all,Terry’s Dad was diagnosed with Vietnam syndrome.Evidence of this is found on page 50 paragraph 6 when it states, “The doctors at the veterans’ hospital call it the Vietnam syndrome.”This suggests that Terry’s Dad does have PTSD because Vietnam syndrome known today as PTSD.
