Texas and Its Natural Resources The state of Texas is the second largest state in the United States. Due to its location and size, it covers different geographical areas and climates. These areas support different ecosystems from deserts to coastal wetlands, with local wildlife varying with the environment. With such varied climates and yearly rainfall, it is easy to have crops growing in the east and little rainfall and an open rocky desert with cacti in the west. The geological history is also varied across the state leading to different mineral deposits by region. It is easy to see that Texas is a state with many unique areas that provide a wide variety of natural resources, native crops, and wildlife. Natural Resources …show more content…

Ever since the Manifest Destiny became the United States’ holy goal, Texas had always been in the sight of the United State, for the location and size of the territory were extremely attractive for the expansion. In addition, the state offered the Rio Grande River which promised great trade in the future. These factors made Texas a key component in fulfilling the sacred duty, so when news spread that Texas became independent, there was no time wasted from the United States in integrating them into the union. Even before Texas gained their independence, the United States had become intertwined with the culture of Texas by having hundreds of American citizens immigrating into the territory and spreading American values across the land. As many historians have said “Throughout the United States, especially in the South, support for Texas was warm and widespread. Men, money, and
In the American viewpoint, Texas is seen as the state that enhances their western characteristics alongside with their historic past of events placed in significant monuments. This was to preserve their identity which had long gone through vast disputes in the past regarding to the creation of the state. “Texans were even more determined than most states to recover their past. No other region of the country had experienced such a convoluted history.” (A Line in the Sand: The Alamo in Blood and Memory, 205) Texas had gained their independence from Mexico in 1836 and have remained a separate nation for about nearly a decade. The Republic of Texas was then granted their official recognition as a state in 1845 through the annexation of the United States of America.
Detra, I can relate with you as I am also not a Texan native or know much about Texas government and its history. When I hear about Texas first thoughts that comes to mind is either their love for their football team, bbq, or women’s big hair do’s. That’s what I related to “everything is bigger in Texas” with, however as I have read it also relates to their pride, their state size and their growing population. I also never understood why Texans are extremely proud people then again as I have been reading and as you have mentioned they have had an interesting history and have shown that they will fight for what they believe in no matter the cost.
The geography of Texas is hugely varied, from beaches to mountains. You can break Texas down into four main regions, divided by rivers, escarpments and other natural features. Texas has all the locations you might need: forests, cliffs, mountainous desert that could pass for Mars, NASA's Johnson Space Center and even a coastline. The Lone Star state is often divided into four regions: the Gulf Coastal Plains, the Interior Lowlands, also called the North Central Plains, the Great Plains and the Basin and Range or Mountains and Basins region. Each region has unique landforms and natural features.

When one thinks of natural resources, probably the first things that come to mind are fossil fuels. If you bring the state of Texas into the equation, you think of the big oil wells. Texas tea, black gold, swamp juice, whatever you want to call it, oil is a big part of people's perception of Texan natural resources. But there are a lot more natural resources in Texas than you might think. The natural soils make for good farming and ranching conditions, we've got great rock deposits for a variety of industrial uses, and we have a number of different mineral deposits scattered through the state. It's time we took a look at some of the many natural resources Texas has to offer.
In chapter 1 of On the Border: An Environmental History of San Antonio, Char Miller introduces the reader to the environmental background of the San Antonio region. He explains that throughout San Antonio there is a lot of rich environmental history due to the human environmental interactions and the physical setting of San Antonio. He also answers the question of why San Antonio was established at its location. He conveys this through three answers that he calls environmental factors. These factors are water, topography and ecotone. These three environmental factors are what Miller described to have a meaningful and important role to how San Antonio was created. Ecotone is the boundaries in which San Antonio was created on as well as the diversity

the urban sectors. These changes have brought about dramatic alterations in land-use patterns and rapid disappearance of valuable natural ecosystems. The need for more water, more food, more energy, more consumer goods, is not only the result of a greater population, but also the result of over-utilization of resources by people from the more affluent societies, and the affluent sections of our own. Industrial development is aimed at meeting growing demands for all consumer items. However, these consumer goods also generate waste in ever larger quantities. The growth of industrial complexes has led to a shift of people from their traditional, sustainable, rural way of life to urban centers that developed around industry. During the last few decades, several small urban centers have become large cities, some have even become giant mega-cities. This has increased the disparity between what the surrounding land can produce and what the large number of increasingly consumer-oriented people in these areas of high population density consume. Urban centers cannot exist without resources such as water from rivers and lakes, food from agricultural areas, domestic animals from pasture lands and timber, fuel wood,
