Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860, being the first Republican President; he said he was going to keep slavery out of the states. Then seven states from the south seceded and formed a new nation, The Confederate States of America because they wanted to have slaves so they work do the work for them. By Abraham Lincoln being president, new law of not having slaves, and seven states seceding, the Civil War begun between the north and the south. The 1989 film Glory, directed by Edward Zwick, is a classic Civil War based on the history of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, which is for former slaves and free black men. Colonel Robert Shaw headed the Regiment, Major Forbes was his assistant, and they worked together to make this …show more content…
Step by step, he was getting closer to his regiment men and he was changing at the same time, he really believed in them and he actually did love them.
Major Forbes, a friend of Colonel Shaw, is now the Major of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Colonel Shaw asked him if he wanted to be the Major, but Forbes didn’t know if he was ready because he really didn’t truly believe in himself, he was unconfident and immature, but then he said yes because he saw that Colonel Shaw believed in him. He changed from not really wanting to work with the regiment to defending them from everything and from everyone, even sometimes from Colonel Shaw. Major Forbes got really attached to his regiment because he saw that they really wanted the freedom and they really wanted to learn everything so they could fight.
Private Tripp has a change from being all negative and unsupportive to being supportive and positive. He was no free man; he was a slave and he volunteer for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. In the a scene he represents that he’s a strong man, they found him trying to go somewhere and his punishment was getting whipped. While getting whipped he looked straight in the eye to Colonel Shaw and since it hurt him, he cried. Tripp, almost throughout the whole movie he showed he had a great deal of anger and disappointment toward the south, and he was the only character that talked with anger, the only thing he wanted more then anything in life was
In the first battle, he was shot in the leg. Colonel Shaw was going to send him back to Boston for care, but refused to leave his fellow soldiers and continue to fight for his men. That shows you how much he matured throughout the movie. As soon as Colonel Shaw was shot down in the Battle at Fort Wagner, he took the flag and gave one of the best fights in the Battle of Fort Wagner. As he was shot down in that battle, which eventually lead to his death, his fellow soldiers knew they had lost a key part of their force. With that said, Corporal Thomas Searles might have only started out as a typical inexperienced soldier, but ended up being one of the most profound soldiers in the force, which proves he represents glory in the movie.

To begin with, immediately after the election and inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, the newly-established Republican Party’s presidential nominee, eleven states of the South seceded from the Union. These events marked the beginning of the Civil War and the war was a result of many political tensions that had emerged between the North and the South in the prior decades, all of which were associated with the institution of slavery installed in the Southern United States. President Lincoln began the Civil War with the South in response to states’ secession from the Union, and therefore, the war was not solely concentrated over the issue of slavery in American society. The North fought to preserve the Union while the Confederacy fought to
Once the fighting started in 1861, the Union’s commitment to maintain border slave states such as Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri in the Union had imposed caution on the unsettled controversy of independence. In 1862, the Confederate army under the command of Robert E. Lee had made devastating victories in the North that declined their morality and persuaded President Lincoln to make a more courageous step in winning the war and the abolishment of slavery.
When the 54th is marching south, they run into a regiment of white soldiers, and a quarrel breaks out between Private Trip and some of the white men. Rawlins steps in to stop the fight and one of the white men is about to be disciplined, but Rawlins says that there is no need. This scene is displays the harsh criticism the 5th received, even from their own side, but it also gives a halo effect to Rawlins, who could have easily said nothing, and watched the soldier get punished. Later on down the road the 54th meets up with Colonel James Montgomery, the colonel of another all black regiment. In the movie Montgomery was a racist and didn’t discipline his men at all. While the real Montgomery was noted to have discipline issues, the movie probably took it way out of hand, Montgomery even shoots one of his men for misbehaving. Montgomery later takes the 54th “to see some action”, which actually meant looting and setting fire to a town of innocents. In the movie, Montgomery threatens Shaw to set fire to the town by saying he’ll take command of the 54th if he doesn’t follow orders, so Shaw reluctantly orders the town to be burned. Shaw writes of this event in his letters, stating “the civilian population of women and children were fired upon, forced from their homes, their possessions looted, and the town burned.” Shaw also noted, "On the way up, Montgomery threw several shells
Is the movie “Glory” an accurate portrayal of the African American experience in the Union Army ? Yes the movie Glory is an accurate portrayal of African American experience in the Union Army because all of the characters were completely fictional, but it was said the 54th regiment was mostly educated freedmen rather than a bunch of runaway slaves that they put in the movie I think they did that because they want blacks to look like less of a people. Majority of the main characters were fictional like John Rawlins, Trips, and Private Jupiter Sharts. Trip was the angry runaway slave, John was the old looking grandfather dude in the movie he was the one that was mainly holding the group together and Sharts was the religious one. African American served in the Civil War on both Union and Confederate side in the Union Army about 179,000
135) This describes Major Jackson’s general attitude towards war and towards God. Jackson is extremely pious and does all he can to please God and to follow His path. Newspaper coverage of his battles quickly publicized him and the title Hero was given to Jackson. Throughout the war, Jackson shows dedication, going beyond his orders and chasing away his enemies. He also shows an immense concern for his troops, he “had seen the bare feet, the bloody impressions, and he felt a deep pain, a sadness.” (Pg. 289) His men were shabby compared to the forces of Hancock and Chamberlain.
When Thomas hears of Shaw being appointed to lead the first regiment of colored men, he declares himself the first volunteer. Now, this seemed odd to me at the time because I was aware of his lack of military and labor experience, however, he was not doing it because he was a soldier, but because he wanted to be there to support his friend who has been good to him all this time. When he joins the regiment, he still sees himself and Colonel Shaw as friends, but he quickly learns of the dividing ranks in the military preventing his friendship with Colonel Shaw. Because of the ranks, Colonel Shaw forces himself and Major Forbes to cut the friendship ties with Thomas because Thomas is in fact enlisted and under them. This adjustment proves to be
Glory is the story of Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who leads the war's first all-black volunteer regiment the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry into battles and discovers along the way he has to confront the moral question of racial prejudice inside and outside of his regimen. Colonel Shaw was the commander of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, also known as the Massachusetts “Fighting” Fifty-fourth, which was a position he has been thrown into and felt that he may not be fit for the job. At first Shaw was a little cowardly, during the battle, bomb fragments almost hit him and he passed out. He later seems guilty and not very motivated, but with the help of his friend Forbes and some time, Shaw turns himself into the leader that his men need. At the end Colonel Shaw’s courage shows when he volunteers to be the leading regiment in the assault on Fort Wagner and then during battle he forges on when the battle seems to a lost cause.
The Battle of Gettysburg was amongst one the most important turning points during the Civil War. It was a three-day bloody battle between the Union and Confederate forces which would ultimately lead up to the victory of the Union. In The Killer Angels, Michael Shaara shows a depiction of the battle through the eyes of the officers and tries to give the reader a first-hand look into the daily struggles that they had to deal with when it came to distinguishing between what’s best for their men and chances of success in the battle. In the book, we are introduced with two important officers: Colonel Chamberlain of the Union force, and General Lee of the Confederate force. Throughout the book, we witness different leadership strategies and philosophies between both officers which ultimately serve as their road to success or failure in the battle. Focusing on General Lee’s philosophy on leadership, “To be a good soldier, you must love the army. But to be a good officer you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love.”, it reinforces the idea that in order to fully succeed at battle, you must set aside and sacrifice your sense of sympathy towards your soldiers as a way to avoid making emotional decisions.
Thousands upon thousands of people died, hundreds of thousands injured and all over a simple disagreement... whether to rid slavery or not. In "The Red Badge of Courage", Stephen Crane portrays many themes through the main character Henry. Henry signed up for the 304th regiment in the Civil War. When he tells his mother, she is very disappointed because she told him not to. She did not want him to because Henry's father is not around; his father passed away when Henry was young.
The film Glory by Edward Zwick is one of the most well-known films of all time. The film itself is solely based upon the first formal unit of the Union Army during the American Civil War which consist of all African American men. They were essentially the very first unit of United States Colored Troops. They were formally known for their courageous attempts to and actions at Fort Wagner in 1863. The film is set in many different locations such as New York, Maryland, South Carolina and Massachusetts. In each of these different locations events took place that shaped our history. For example on November twenty seventh of 1862 Robert Shaw started to train soldiers. July eighteenth 1863 the Colonel Shaw and his troops attempted to take Fort Wagner, which didn’t succeed.
He wasn’t sure whether he would run or fight during his first battle. When the first battle begins, he gets scared and flees. After finding his way back to the regiment he was embarrassed by his actions and lies to the soldiers to conceal his fear. He told them that he was separated from the regiment when in fact he fled from the battle. As time progressed his anger towards the enemy transforms him from being fearful into a war savage. He becomes angry and only wants the other side’s blood. After some time his regiment is sent home. As this was happening, he realizes that there is more to life than war and revenge. He remembers the good times in life before he was sent to war. He is no longer afraid of war, but realizes that he doesn’t need to embrace it any
In the movie Colonel Robert G. Shaw is introduced as well as Major Forbes, and Private Thomas Searles. In the beginning of the movie Thomas was introduced as a friend of Colonel Shaw however, when Thomas decided to join the army that is when their relationship changed. Major Forbes is a very close friend of Colonel Shaw and he himself noticed that Shaw was treating Thomas as a complete stranger when he decided to become part of the army. There were a couple scenes in the movie where Shaw ignored Thomas and even made him cry. Major Forbes decided to step up and address the issue with Shaw as to how he was treating Thomas, and Shaw made a very good point when he told Forbes that his job is to train these men before they go out into the field and there is no time for
and he soon lost himself and thought that he had to do it to stay alive. And he soon explained on how time goes on he started to see his commander as a father figure and the sergeants as your brothers. This is a reason why many child soldiers do not leave. Because when they are forced to kill they become used to it and start seeing their commanders as people who care about them and they will do anything not only to survive but also impress
