The 2010 Haiti Earthquake

In 2010 the country of Haiti experienced a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and many lives were lost and buildings are slowly being rebuilt today. Through the years after this disaster, many countries from around the world have come to its aid in rebuilding.

Earthquakes have afflicted the world since its inception. The sudden release of energy from volcanoes or displacing of earth plates can result in disasters of extreme magnitude. These usually naturally occurring phenomenon have been responsible from wiping out entire towns throughout history and until today continue to produce major loss of life and infrastructure. It can take years for a city or country to recover from a major event of this kind and when a third world country is involved, the result is usually exponentially worse than in a developed country. On January twelfth 2010, a deadly earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit the coast of Port au prince, Haiti for 35 seconds, killing around 200,000 and leaving approximately to 1.5 million of the population homeless including kids who became orphans and vice versa in a matter of less than a minute. Before the earthquake, the way of life was not as bad as portrayed back at home, most of the news broadcasted in the mainstream media were exaggerated news, negative light and unfair tales to make Haiti look inferior.

On January 12, 2010 one of the deadliest events occurred in Haitian history. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti which destructed major buildings such as the hospitals which were very important for the wide spread diseases that occurred at the time of the earthquake in the country. Homes and lives had changed drastically after the earthquake struck, many had to bear with the loss of personal belongings and loved ones. Due to the severe destruction, New York Times stated that the city Port- au-Prince “fell into darkness” (Romero and Lacey). The Haiti earthquake had catastrophic, slow recovery effects on many lives, the environment and the economy.

In 2014, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti. This magnitude 7.0 earthquake caused mass devastation to the capital of Haiti leaving the city of Port-au-Prince in ruins and the country's economy in shambles.

In January 2010, Haiti was hit by an earthquake. It was the most severe Earthquake that the county had seen in years. Three years later, the country still had not recovered from this disaster. Sarah Conque, who is a therapeutic recreational therapist, felt compelled to help the people in Haiti. She started helping while she was a graduate school student.

It caused horrific flooding and major mudslides; this also sparked water shortage and electrical outings and left families without homes. Haiti depends heavily on its agriculture and trade, the earthquake damaged crops and livestock, and meanwhile the 2010 earthquake left Haiti in the most devastating state. This earthquake has affected the school system drastically, the folding of the education system, with about half the schools in the republic being affected by the earthquake, has been withdrawn and today there are more children in school, at least at the early school level, than ever before.

On 12th January 2010, at 1653hrs local time, Haiti was rocked by a massive earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Reichter scale. The immediate event rocked a wide area with an epicenter near Lougane, approximately 16 miles from Haiti capital of Port Au Prince. Afterwards, shock waves spread in an area with radius of 50 miles were recorded (Farmer & Mukherjee, 2011). The Haiti government report estimates the total number of missing people and those whose bodies were discovered at above 300,000. In addition, more than 3 million people were displaced from their homes.

Imagine you are in the country Haiti and you are sitting in your house in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince. You are sitting in your living room and talking to your family when you begin to feel the ground shake. You all look around confused for a second until you realize it is an earthquake. You watch in terror as things begin to fall on the ground and break. Then, you hear a loud noise from above. You look up and watch as the ceiling begins to collapse. You and your family are only a few out of many victims of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. The Haiti Earthquake was the most devastating earthquake to ever hit Haiti. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck about 16 miles away from the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Because Haiti was a very poor country at the time, over 230,000 people lost their lives. The quake also caused at least 50 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or higher. The 2010 Haiti Earthquake greatly damaged the country, and it also affected the economy and people.

Approximately 220,000 people died, three hundred thousand were injured and two million people were suddenly made homeless. The earthquake happened in the urban areas and caused most of the buildings to collapse, even the presidential palace and many other government buildings were damaged. Since Haiti being one of the poorest countries has poor quality of buildings which are not at par with seismic codes endured vast damages financially and resulted in high mortality rate. Envision if calamity struck while a person or people have this type on infliction cast upon them. Postulate a menacing tornado hit Haiti, or a vicious hurricane, or perhaps a formidable earthquake. “Haiti is still recovering from the devastating earthquake of 2010.” (UNWTO, 2012) The earthquake that occurred on January 12th of that year was devastating to the people of Haiti. Although it was not the largest earthquake of the year, that honour going to an 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Maule, Chile on February 27th, it was certainly the most destructive. (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015) It has had a lasting impact on Haiti with rebuilding efforts still ongoing in 2016.
