The Advantages Of The North In The Civil War

The transportation of products, supplies, Natural resources, and people in the North and South was a big factor in who won the war. The attached 1861 railroad map by James Lloyd shows how dense the railroads in the North were compared to the South. The North relied more on the railroad to transport their manufactured goods. The railroads also helped the union by sending ammunition and food quickly, but The there was a fear of being sabotaged. In the map, we can also see the South railroads were very scattered. The South didn 't have much of a need to have as many railroads because they were farming communities. The Union also destroyed what little railroads the South had (Boyer 454). The Confederacy then could not transport supplies nor people to other parts of the South (Beringer 310).

From 1861 to 1865, the United States of America was fighting itself. The northern part of the United States, known as the Union or simply the North, was trying to end slavery in the southern part of the United States. The South seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. The North consisted of Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Nevada, and Oregon. The South consisted of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. The North wanted slavery to be abolished, but the South needed slaves for their economy; the conflict started war. The North and the South were both prepared for war.

Union officer William Tecumseh Sherman observed to a Southern friend that, "In all history, no nation of mere agriculturists ever made successful war against a nation of mechanics. . . .You are bound to fail." While Sherman 's statement proved to be correct, its flaw is in its assumption of a decided victory for the North and failure to account for the long years of difficult fighting it took the Union to secure victory. Unquestionably, the war was won and lost on the battlefield, but there were many factors that swayed the war effort in favor of the North and impeded the South 's ability to stage a successful campaign.

First off, the north had more resources. This can easily be seen when looking at the North versus South chart. The chart shows different types of resources, such as workers, factories, railroads, firearms, and a few other useful things that are needed for a war. North won by number. They had a bigger army, larger navy, and a tremendous difference between population with the south; twenty-one million to seven million, and more infrastructure, factories that could produce weapons and goods and better managerial skills.

One of the biggest advantages the North had was the railroad system. The North had a lot more railroad on its side, which could move anything from soldiers to supplies to weapons. The South’s economy had gone downhill due to blockades on southern exports. No foreign country would ever have loaned money to the south because nobody had any idea if the south would make it through the war. At the end of the war, the southern economy was completely destroyed after making so many economical mistakes and having so much of their property destroyed.

Although the North won the war, the outcome could have been different if the South was more successful. One way the South could have been more successful is they could have produced more railroads and telegraph lines. To elaborate, if the South produced more telegraph lines, they would have been able to send forts information quicker. Not to mention, if the Confederate States of America fabricated more railroads during the Civil War, traveling for soldiers would have been quicker and more efficient. In like manner, another way the South could have been more successful was if they made better battle strategies. The American Civil War began in 1861 and lasted until 1865. It was fought for a number of reasons and was a battle between the Union and the Confederate armies. The Civil War was an irrepressible event that occurred due to a series of occasions that pushed the North and the South away from each other such as the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the growth of the Abolitionist movement, the election of president Abraham Lincoln and The Dred Scott v. Sandford case.

During the American Civil War, the Union was successful because of their numerous factories, population, and transportation. The Confederate was unsuccessful because of their economic failures. The Union came up with a plan called the Anaconda Plan to shut down the Confederate economically and it worked. This plan was an idea to make the Confederate crumble economically. They used their navy to surround there harbors and the Mississippi to stop any imports or exports to the Confederate. The Union had more factories than the Confederate allowing them to be able to produce goods way faster. This also allowed them to make guns, clothing, and railroads. The union had more people fighting in the war giving them more troops to fight in battles, and all of the troops had supplies thanks to their numerous factories. The Unionerners had better transportation than the Confederate giving them the ability to travel through the country faster. This also allowed them to transport goods faster. The Union and the Confederate both had their strengths and weaknesses but at the end of the war the Union showed that they were stronger than the Confederate.

Massachusetts was extremely important during this time due to their contribution of generals, soldiers, and industrial manufacturing.
