Position PaperThe average cost of a slave is $90 dollars nowadays. According to the US Department of State's 2007 Trafficking in Persons report, there are 800,00 people trafficked across international borders every year; 80% of those victims being female and 50% of these people being children under the age of 18. Slave-Owners often use the term "euphemisms" instead of 'slavery' in order to avoid getting caught. Such euphemisms include: debt bondage, bonded labor, attached labor, restavec ( French word meaning "one who stays with" ), forced labor, and indentured servitude. At the moment, India is the country with the highest number of people living as slaves. Norway states that the trafficking of humans/Modern Slavery is a crime and must be
“Human trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, and the transport of people within countries for sexual exploitation, forced labor, and/or organ donating.” (Gale) “Slavery is the condition in which one or more persons is owned as property by another and is under the owner’s control.” (American Heritage Dictionary) Trafficked people who are often regarded as disposable, are often used for these various reasons. Although, many believe slavery ended with the Thirteenth Amendment, slavery still exists in 2017. In order to understand that human trafficking is a form of slavery, one needs to examine what it is, the effects, and the solutions.
There are more slaves in this world today than at any point in human history, with an estimate of 21 million in bondage across the globe. Every 30 seconds a person becomes a victim of contemporary slavery, which is a multi-billion dollar industry with estimates of up to $35 billion generated annually. This vile crime robs millions of people of their basic freedom and dignity. Victims of modern-day slavery include U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, adults, and children, who are trapped in forced labor, with little or no hope.
Being fully aware of the benefits of the slaves, the British elevated their importation and by the turn of the eighteenth century African slaves numbered in the tens of thousands in the British colonies (1). As the demands in tobacco increased, labor increased. Like the simple law of supply and demand. Ending of Royal African Company’s monopoly in 1698 encouraged more traders to enter the slave business -- thus making African slaves more accessible (4). As a result of their increased expense, their masters were stringent and determined to get as much out of them as possible thereby working them mercilessly (Faragher 2009, p. 83). Initially, the cost of slaves may have been more expensive but in the end the masters were able to keep them enslaved.
In 1808 Congress outlawed American involvement with the African slave trade, which increase the value of the slave already in the country. The dramatic rise in the monetary value of enslaved workers brought better treatment for many. One planter remarked “The time has been that the farmer would killed up and wear out one Negro to buy another, but it is not so now.” One ex-slave recalled that he was treated just as well as you would a good mule. So even though American did not end slavery, many farmers treated their slave’s way better than they ever had before.
20 to 30 million slaves today? Human trafficking is separated into two categories; sex trafficking
Modern Slavery involves all sort of ancient slavery acts including people being kidnapped from their families and homes, losing their identities and freedom, and being forced to work against their will with no pay under the threat of continuous beatings and sufferings which eventually led to the early death. Human trafficking is the second largest source of illegal income, being surpassed by drugs trafficking. Some trafficking groups have been reported to be switching their cargo from drugs to human beings, in a search of high profits at a lower risk. (STOP THE TRAFFIK 2014)
Human trafficking generates about $150 billion a year and more than 30 million people are being enslaved all over the world, including right here in the US. More people are enslaved now than ever before.

Everyone has a role to play- the government, big and small businesses of all kinds, consumers and
Slavery is when persons are owned and controlled by other persons, and they have little to no freedom. In Eastern Europe slavery ended in 1528, but human trafficking has been going on for thousands of years. A few decrees did not stop the horrible crime called human trafficking. By definition human trafficking is modern day slavery; people that are victims are imprisoned and worked until they are physically unable to any longer. Many people turn a blind eye to human trafficking. Human trafficking can take many forms, as well as many victims. One form of trafficking is slavery. Slavery is having a worker who is unpaid and who works by force using coercion, fraud or threat of bodily harm. “According to the United Nations, there are between 27 and 30 million modern-day slaves in the world (Jesionka, “Human Trafficking: The Myths and the Realities”).” “By 1860, the nation’s black population had jumped from 400,000 to 4.4 million, of which 3.9 million were slaves.(Henry Louis Gates).” That means there are nearly ten times more slaves today than there were in the late 1800’s.
