Welborne 1 Jack Welborne Mrs. Schroder AP Literature 31 December, 2016 Psychological Issues and Awakenings In the book, The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, Edna undergoes numerous awakenings, all of which come about from physical experiences that caused Edna to think deeply without consulting others. For much of the book, Edna struggles with these conflicts internally, but through creative dialogue and commentary, Chopin keeps these portions of the book exciting. Eventually, Edna’s mental struggles give fruit to multiple physical actions that could be considered shocking. When Mademoiselle Reisz played the piano, Edna was moved. This is strange, because Chopin adds that this is not the first time she has heard a master pianist, but perhaps it was the first time she was ready. The chords sent tremors and chills down Edna’s spine and instead of seeing the passions conveyed by the music as she usually did, she felt them. It was like a live show of her own life that she was very much taking part in. The sounds aroused feelings in her soul, perhaps feelings that she knew existed, but refused to recognize. Edna feels like she has thrown away her youthful life to settle down with people she does not truly love. She does, however, love Robert very much but also realizes that society would never accept her if she ditched her family and ran away with Robert. She is truly heart broken, and this whole time, she is just thinking about this in her head without talking about it with someone. It becomes a psychological battle that grows very intense. Eventually Edna feels so desperate that she decides the best way to solve it is just to end her life. Edna walks into the ocean and just keeps going. She sees a bird with a broken wing just falling in circles, and this perfectly symbolizes how she feels. She thinks that her life has been wasted, and at this point she is just going around in circles not being able to do what she desires to do. For the last time in the book, intense mental or psychological activity gives way to awakenings and changes of consciousness. This creates extreme suspense and is a very effective way to keep the reader
