Do you remember ever going to the zoo as a child? Most children love the zoo. They get to experience animals that they would not normally get to see every day. They also get to learn about those animals and many are greatly affected when they learn about one being endangered and learning that means that there are almost no more left. They want to learn how to help and that is where they learn that they can help. They learn that they too can grow up to be scientists, zoologists, rescuers, wildlife rehabilitators, or spokespeople for wildlife conservation, all of which are important to helping all the animals. Anyone can help by just visiting zoos because zoos rely on their visitors to continue to stay open, care for many amazing animals, and educate the public about wildlife around the world. The exhibits are also very fascinating, and after going to the zoo you can catch a glimpse of a certain animal's way of life. There have been many discussions about the welfare of animals since the first zoos were created. Some people agree that animals should be kept in zoo’s, they argue that it benefits the animals because their every need is catered to. However, in some zoo’s they are treated the exact opposite of being catered to. Sometimes the animals are also deprived of a natural environment that the zoo’s fail to recreate. However, zoo’s can be helpful educationally to kids. It gives them a close up on the beauty of the animals, but it comes at the animals expense.

Zoos have always been criticized because some claim that animals are being abused and mistreated due to the lack and care of certain zoos. However, zoos actually help many animals with research and are critically important for conservation purposes. People need to understand that zoos have programs that breed endangered animals as well as rescue programs for exotic animals that people are no longer able to support. Also, they have many hands on activities that allow people to get more connected to animals. In addition, zoos do not only focus on animals. They focus on environmental problems/concerns as well. Zoos help us stay educated about environmental impacts and animal care.

Zoos take giant roles to protect animals. In the magazines I read, "The Stripes Will Survive", and "The Zoos Go Wild," and the video that I watched called "Behind the Scenes with the National Zoo's Lion Cubs.", there are ways that they help the animals.

Zoos present a certain blend of nature and culture. They have always provided a way to bring natural wildlife and urban Americans together as a means of entertainment. Yet, throughout the years the role of zoos have changed. Though once used for amusement, zoos are now being used for education on preservation and the welfare of endangered species. One may wonder where and how the idea of zoos started and just how they, and the environment around them, have changed throughout history.

Do zoos fulfill the needs of the animals? Should animals be kept in only one enclosure for their whole life? Is it worth all the time and money for the animals to be unhappy? Many people think zoos are doing a good job of keeping animals happy in the man made zoos. Because people think that, they support the zoos by giving them money to see these animals instead of going to animal preservations where the enclosures aren’t entirely man made. Animals that can function and survive in the wild should not be kept in zoos because the enclosures do not meet the needs of the animals living in them, zoos restrict animals from their innate behavior and their natural instincts, and zoos are expensive and damage animals homes.

Some people go to zoos to see the wild animals, but that’s not all that they are for. People in groups such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) may think that zoos cannot provide the needs to wild animals as the wild can. Zoos help animals. They have improved, helping to repopulate species and save animals in the wild.

The first modern zoo founded was in Vienna, Madrid and Paris in the eighteenth century and later in London and Berlin in the nineteenth century. The first zoo to be established in America was in Philadelphia and Cincinnati in the 1870s. In today’s America there are thousands of zoos. Humans like to be entertained regardless of how they are being entertained, whether that is walking through the park, watching a show, listening to music or simply going to the zoo. There is truth behind zoos that many don’t see, for example, many zoos don’t show the death rates that many zoo animals have after being transported from their natural habitants or the experiences that the zoo keepers provide to the animals being kept in captivity. To what extent are we okay with animals being tortured or being aware that animals are being killed just so humans can be entertained? While there are benefits to keeping animals in captivity, scholars agree that there are more negative effects that are damaging to the animals. The purpose of zoos can be more than just keeping animals in captivity and creating significant health or mental problems, zoos also can have a positive outcome, zoos can help keep endangered animals safe from others who are trying to kill them for what they are worth. They are life savers, and that?s what people don?t realize. When people find a sick animal they call for help. Usually a zoo that has the stuff to fix and take care of the animal will be called. They will go and help the animal as quickly as possible (Miller). Zoos are the best thing to keep animals alive and also from going extinct (Morris). There are also different ways that zoos are changing. Zoos have gotten very good at habitual restoration (Sunquist). They know how to make the animals comfortable. They study what the animals likes. They look at their normal habitat in the wild and they can bring it to the zoos. For the bigger animals, they have bigger cages. For the aquatic animals they have water. They also have cages that look like the wild. They have real trees and things the animals can play with. The animals think that it is their natural habitat. Some states are even making cramped cages against the law (Mendoza). The bigger change that is happening is that some zoos are sponsoring conservation programs in the wild, so the animals is extremely comfortable where they are and people can still visit them. They say this will be very popular in the future (Sunquist). In my opinion, this seems very cool and different. I think other people will like it. The zoos are trying to connect with the animals. One reason why zoos are not good for animals is because they confine animals to tiny spaces. “The treatment of animals held in captivity has changed over history, as the understanding and views of their well-being has increased” (Goodman, 2016). Zoos might have been a good idea in the beginning, but they are not suitable for animals today. “118 animal deaths occurred at AZA-accredited locations, with 10 happening due to human error, including the gorilla Harambe's death at the Cincinnati Zoo” (Thoet, 2017). Zoos are seen as a fun environment, but people do not know what goes on.

Zoos provide protection for animals. Some hunters may kill animals in the wild for their skin so they can sell it. In a zoo, this can never occur. Another reason that zoos should not be banned is that animals are really looked after in the zoo. If an animal got sick in the wild nature there is no one to treat it and most probably the animal will suffer from pain and may even die. However, if the same case was in a zoo, highly qualified vets will be available to deal with this situation appropriately and these vets will provide medicine to the sick or injured

Some people agree that animals should be kept in the zoo. They said it would be safer for the animals and they won’t be extinct. The amount of possibilities of them dying, shot by hunters or any other reason, still higher than the chances of their survival.
