For years, China renminbi has been set each morning, then allowed the currency to get trade in the stock market, but then China economy got in a risk. Two crisis turn into the biggest drop in the renminbi since 1994. One was the burn in Tianjin. The other was the stumble of the stock exchange of Shanghai. Residents had experiencing the explosion at a chemical-producer storage that caused the death and hospitalization of over 600 employees. This tragic incident was the consequence of the corruption of the authorities. The containers were contaminating with exceeding 27 times the safety level of sodium-cyanide. Why nobody was responsible enough to prevent this problem? Inspectors have knowledge of this, but they didn’t do anything at the respect, they only acted as they weren’t allowed of the situation. In my opinion, the competition for jobs in China is in a high demand, the problem of many people is the lack of education, for that reason, they will take any low pay rate, and will work in any condition. Constantly, thousands of people emigrate from small towns to big cities looking for a better job opportunity that could give them enough to support their families. As Zhou Ping mentioned for The New York Times “Competition is too intense; there are so many people fighting for each job” (Bradsher, 2015) After the explosion, thousands of residents were worry in whether they will be able to go back home. The air was contaminated with chemicals that weren’t safe for their
One of the hallmarks of china’s socialist economy made a statement promise of employment to all and job-security with virtually lifelong tenure. They were overstaffed to fulfilling socialist goals and job-security lower the workers ‘motivation to work. This socialist policy was called the iron rice bowl.China’s employed labor force is rarely over 800
The attacks on the morning of September 11, 2001 left the American people in shock and awe. The attacks left nearly 3,000 people dead in New York, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania including 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers (history.com, 2010). Most people had not seen firsthand the kind of devastation that was brought upon this nation in their lifetimes. The police, firefighters, and port authority officers of New York responded quickly in an effort to save as many lives as possible. Many of them lost their lives during the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings. What is not as frequently cited is the number of health concerns that still plague the thousands of first responders that tried to help the victims of the vicious attacks. According to the Center for Disease Control’s World Trade Center Health Program (2012), there are currently 32 conditions and injuries and 60 types of cancers that are currently covered by the program. This is a continually growing list of health hazards that still affect those responding to the call to assist in recovery efforts over 15 years later. When the police and firefighters entered those buildings they did not know what would happen, but they accepted that risk. Some would lose their lives, but those that survived would have to deal with the health
Whenever people think of communism, Russian SFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) and China, as two biggest communist polity, always come to people’s mind first. Likewise, at any time people mention authoritarianism, they will never miss the two biggest authoritarian regimes: Russia (Russian Federation) and China. The former, with the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991, the world’s first and largest communist polity and the prime facilitator of communist political system came to an end, which creates the modern Russia Federation, a country that still persists in authoritarianism but applies democratic political system and constitution. The latter, after experience multiple destructive invasions and humiliating
Author Rebecca Katz, a Professor at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, focuses on protecting our health throughout the world when “targeting environmental disasters and preventing diseases.” She mentions the tragedy of 9/11. When 9/11 happened so many hearts were broken, so many lives were taken and the world was just at a complete scare. United States had to take action and protocol to protect the citizens. In order to keep our nation safe, Public Health Preparedness needs and should be followed as a process. I say that because just not the United States but the world needs to know what to do and follow when there are disasters, tragedies’ whether they are little or big. Katz mention, “Citizens will
The United States and China Relation started since 1784, but it wasn’t until 1970’s when The United States finally recognize the communist people from China. This led us to be influenced by their culture, politics, but the most important economically. The relation of these two countries was not so good at the beginning, since China is a communist country that was involved with many countries that were in war. The interaction of these countries goes back to 1785 when the first Chinese sailors arrived to Baltimore looking for wealth and then it increases in 1847 with the Gold Rush in San Francisco that attracted many Asian Immigrants in look for new opportunities. The U.S. Department of State mentions in their archive United States Relations
This story fits with what we have learned in class in a few different ways. First, we have talked about various environmental issues, environmental sustainability and the social work profession in class. This includes pollution and environmental damage. This smoke and ash from these huge fires is definitely not good for the planet or the people nearby. Many who were several miles away from any flames were noting ash raining from the sky. The air quality was therefore also affected and people could definitely smell the smoke. Second, as I already mentioned, people had to evacuate their homes. These people left behind everything they had and many people’s homes completely burned down, destroying everything. This would be very traumatic. There are numerous government programs in place that could assist with
The HRM would have to take all the factors and consider the differences and figure out a pay scale if they want to compete they would have to have a higher pay scale than the average that is listed above.
Standing on the street asking two men their opinion of public safety. “It has not changed my opinion on public safety in New York but when we are traveling through the city on big holidays or important events we will definitely be more cautious.” Said William Leemon and Clayton Howell. With this being said it’s easy to tell these bombs has the city on edge. From the reactions of people I have interviewed it also seems like there was not much that people believe could have prevented such horrific
The effects of a chemical attack can take weeks to recover from including the devastation on the environment, the affects it has on the local communities, and the fear that spreads across the world. Local, state and federal agencies, such as environmental protection agency, FEMA, and other local emergency management agencies, will be involved in relocating victims to temporary housing, aiding in the cleanup, and the continued evaluation of vulnerabilities present and the security measures can be improved upon to prevent future
Being born and raised in India, married in the US to my beloved who is orignially from China, and currently living and raising our two kids in China for the last several years, I have had the opportunity to observe a lot of what this book talks about in an up-close and personal way. While I am impressed by the amount of research and effort that has obviously gone into this book, I am ultimately disappointed by the author's inability to transcend his own biases and the tendency to measure everything from what may be best called a "Western" viewpoint. The author's understanding of India is clearly much superior than his familiarity with China. China is a notoriously difficult onion to peel and I'm afraid the author does not get beyond a couple
On April 17, 2013 the disaster of West, TX was an ammonium nitrate explosion at a fertilizer storage and distribution facility. The explosion killed 15 and 200 other people were injured. According to the United States Geological Survey, the explosion was recorded as a 2.1-magnitude tremor. 350 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed, including three schools, an apartment complex and a nursing home. The last time the plant had been inspected by OSHA (Occupational safety and Health Administration) was in 1985. The force of the explosion was 7.5-10 tons of TNT. The injuries that were seen included typical 'blast injuries': punctured lungs, bowels, eardrums and wounds caused by flying shrapnel and debris. Some had broken bones and head injuries
Emergency responders face many risks on a daily basis. Terrorist acts present unique risks and challenges. In addition to direct threats like small arms fire or secondary explosive devices, first responders are often subjected to indirect dangers when responding to terrorist acts. They can be exposed to smoke or other airborne toxins and are vulnerable to structural instability and fires. "Many occupants of the Twin Towers were killed by direct attack; in addition, many emergency response personnel were killed during the rescue operation. And the aftereffects of the attack— both the cleanup and the pollution caused by the collapse of the towers—continue to claim victims to this day” (Newman and Clarke, 2008). Additionally, psychological stress
Although, this incident was clearly an accident but, raises concern about terrorist activity. Vinyl Chloride is a necessary product in the production of PVC goods and short-term exposures has effects on the central nervous system (CNS), extended or long-term exposure result in liver damage and cancer (EPA, 2000). I believe a terrorist attack unfortunately could be successful with chemical weapons utilizing a passenger train or rail cars and purposely causing a crash or derailment to release the chemical into the community. The accidental train derailment carrying vinyl chloride caused respiratory problems, dizziness and nausea to many of the residents within 3,500 feet of the incident and resulted in about 250 visits to the emergency room for evaluation from other residents (NJDOH, 2014). Undoubtedly, after being part of the HazMat response in 2012 and knowing many residents of the small community were exposed to vinyl chloride, an intentional release of a chemical agent designated as a weapon could easily be carried out utilizing the rail system. If we modify the scenario somewhat from vinyl chloride to a chemical weapon with 250 people affected this would be a major impact not only to the community but, to the hospitals and
The emission of dangerous, hazardous gas clouds into the residential area may expose the local population to serious threats. In such a situation, it is important to unite the efforts of the entire community to address the issue successfully and to minimize casualties and injuries caused to the population. This is why the involvement of the private sector in the emergency response is pivotal and should focus on the involvement of private companies operating in the field of transportation, telecommunication, utilities, banking, hospitals, and retail.
Although this sometimes isn’t the factories fault because most of the workers are uninsured so they are denied medical and social services (“China: Beijing’s Migrant 1”). Most of the factories do try to pay their workers by hour at about twenty cents per hour, but some only pay them once a year (Goldman 1). This however is breaking the rule of Labor Law fifty in China, which states that workers must be paid on a monthly basis. The average wage per month is only about sixty-five dollars which isn’t a sufficient amount of money to support an average family (“China: Beijing’s Migrant 1”). These people try to work overtime to earn more money, but often times they are forced to do this regardless (Goldman 2). Chinese workers often work in fear, because they have to ask permission to leave even after their shifts are done and to even go to the bathroom (Goldman 1). The Chinese workforce is starting to realize these problems and they won’t stand for it.
