The fence was not only a physical barrier, but also separated the Jewish people from the Germans due to their race. The German soldiers In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas treated the Jewish people terrible only because of their religion. An example of a fence in our time is discrimination due to color of one’s skin. Before America passed the 13th amendment slavery was very common and the treatment of slaves was terrible. Even though we made it illegal there are still small slave populations around the world. Even today we still have terrorist groups that feel like they are the best and are highly racist to other groups of people. Today we have ISIS and they are causing many people to flee syria just like the GErmans caused the Jewish people to flee Germany. A fence is usually just used to show your property lines, but it is a divider. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas the fence is a divider used to keep the Jewish poeple away from the Germans. If people could be tolerant of one another then we would not have any problems and there would be no fences that would be put up due to
Arthur Baer once said “A good neighbor is a fellow who smiles at you over the back fence, but doesn’t climb over it.” In the poem ‘Mending Wall’, by Robert Frost, it talks about two neighbors who rebuild a wall between their pastures. One believes the wall is good and neccary but the other thinks the wall is pointless due to the fact neither have livestock or other pets to trespass on one’s land. Fences are good at respecting boundaries though it can cause issues with neighbors, such as lack of communication or miscommunication, boundary disputes, and regulations that are needed to be met and maintained due to the fencing.
August Wilson did not name his play, Fences, simply due to the melodramatic actions that take place in the Maxson household, but rather the relationships that bond and break because of the “fence”. The “fence” serves as a structural device because the character's lives are constantly changing during the construction of the fence. The dramatic actions in the play strongly depend on the building of the fence in the Maxson’s backyard. Fences represents the metaphorical walls or fences that the main characters are creating around themselves in order to keep people in or vice versa. The title may seem straightforward, but in actuality it is a powerful symbol which can either have positive or
The play “Fence” by August Wilson’s has a connection with real world fence. “The yard is a small dirt yard, partially fenced, except for the last scene, with a wooden sawhorse, a pile of lumber, and other fence-building equipment set off to the side. The Opposite is a tree from which hangs a ball made of rags. A baseball bat leans against the tree. Two oil drums serve as garbage receptacles and sit near the house at right to complete the setting” (Wilson 2). He mentions that the fence has three parts open, unopened and cornerstone. The word yard and fence are symbolically represented structure and dream of country, society and Troy’s family.
In today 's society people have to deal with several issues that we can 't explain. For some of us we built fences to isolate ourselves from others or in some cases to protect ourselves. No matter what the issue is we, all have to struggle to be able to provide for our families. As a child I built fences when it came to my feelings. For example, growing up I was in the chunky side. Since I wasnt so skinny like the pretty girls in my class. I kinda isolated my self from the other students. That way my feelings wouldn 't get hurt. My fence was to protect me from what I thought was going to hurt me. Well the same thing happened to Troy Maxson. In the play, "Fences" written by the well-known playwright, August Wilson, is the story of Troy Maxson and his beloved family. Throughout the whole entire play, a fence is being built around the Maxson household. As the story unfolds to the viewers, the word fences may look like a simple title, but the truth is it has different symbolic meaning. The real definition of the word fence is revealed along with the personalities of the characters in the play. In "Fences", August Wilson uses different types of fences as a metaphor to explain how these people live.
As with most works of literature, the title Fences is more than just a title. It could be initially noted that there is only one physical fence being built by the characters onstage, but what are more important are the ideas that are being kept inside and outside of the fences that are being built by Troy and some of the other characters in Fences. The fence building becomes quite figurative, as Troy tries to fence in his own desires and infidelities. Through this act of trying to contain his desires and hypocrisies one might say, Troy finds himself fenced in, caught between his pragmatic and illusory ideals. On the one side of the fence, Troy creates illusions and embellishments on the truth, talking about how he wrestled with death, his

“Some people build fences to keep people out...and other people build fences to keep people in” (61). In the play, Fences, by August Wilson who displays how fences symbolize different situations to represent different characters. The story takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1950’s, and in the play fences gives an outlook of providing an obstacle or barrier that is intended to keep something out or in. It shows through the protagonist character, named Troy Maxson and his wife Rose in which later they both realize the aftermath of the process of building a fence became the opposite of what they didn’t intend to happen.
August Wilson’s Fences was centered on the life of Troy Maxson, an African American man full of bitterness towards the world because of the cards he was dealt in life amidst the 1950’s. In the play Troy was raised by an unloving and abusive father, when he wanted to become a Major League Baseball player he was rejected because of his race. Troy even served time in prison because he was impoverished and needed money so he robbed a bank and ended up killing a man. Troy’s life was anything but easy. In the play Troy and his son Cory were told to build a fence around their home by Rose. It is common knowledge that fences are used in one of two ways: to keep things outside or to keep things inside. In the same way that fences are used to keep
Throughout history, civilizations have built fences to keep enemies out and keep those they want to protect inside. In society today, people create metaphorical fences in order to fence in their feelings, while others create literal fences in order to keep the unwanted away. In the play Fences, the Maxon family lives in 1950’s America whose love for sports and one another are questioned at times when they need to be together the most. In the play Fences by August Wilson, two main characters Troy and Cory Maxon build a fence, literally and metaphorically, which as the book progresses, becomes a symbol that allows each character to truly understand each other.
For example, the passage stated “White people lived on the other side”; “Don’t climb over that fence when you play.” She said it wasn’t safe.” The fence divided the black and white. The parent of the character, Clover, suggested that she should not go over the fence to play because of the white family that lived there. There was no specific reason why, that’s just the way it was. For instance, the passage stated “It rained a lot that summer. On rainy days that girl sat on the fence in a raincoat. She let herself get all wet an acted like she didn’t even care. Sometimes I saw her dancing around in puddles, splashing and laughing.” “Mama wouldn’t let me go out in the rain.” For example, this quote shows how Clover’s mother would not let her go outside and play in the rain, which the character, Annie, did. The fence stayed in the middle of the blacks and whites, showing the controversial signs/ ways of how they were divided. Therefore, the fence was used as a symbol to show the
The Boy in Striped Pyjamas One of the main ideas in the film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas directed by Mark Herman is that friendship breaks all barriers, no matter the circumstances. This is conveyed through the characters Bruno, a naive Christian boy who loves exploring, and whose father is a head officer in Hitler’s army. And his unexpected friend Shmuel, a Jewish boy who lives in a concentration camp on the opposite side of the forest that Bruno and his family live at. This is a very unusual friendship , but because of the two boy’s naive and kind hearts, they physically and emotionally break every barrier in their way that stops them from being best friends. In this Film it begins with Bruno and his family living securely in Berlin,
“Childhood is measured out by sounds and smells and sights, before the dark hour of reason grows.” - John Betjeman, English poet. Childhood of illusions that the child creates, until they embrace logic. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas focuses on the son of a German soldier, Bruno, during the second World War. Bruno is oblivious to the war and the persecution of the Jews until his father receives a promotion. The family moves to a compound near a concentration camp where Bruno befriends a Jewish boy named Shmuel. Bruno’s naive beliefs about his country lead to his demise in the camp’s gas chamber when he attempts to help his friend. This movie’s theme of naivety is supported through the sound, symbols, characterization, and camera angles.
We no longer live during a time when livestock can roam free in the country, branded and claimed by us. Therefore, everyone needs to have a fence up if they want to be able to keep up with their horses. However, when it comes to horses, you need to make sure you have the right type of fence. Otherwise, you could end up with their wilder side tempting them to roam free again, which could cost you major amounts of money, because a good horse doesn’t come cheap. This is also one of the main reasons you should attempt to find the best type of fence for horses.
Auschwitz. The concentration camp were the most people were killed, too be exact, six million. In the novel The Boy In Striped Pajamas the main character is Bruno. Bruno is a nine year old german boy who is very naive about the Holocaust, jews, and what happened to jews. The Holocaust was a depressing time in Europe for the jewish. A group of people called the Nazi’s killed jews because of one man who blamed the jews for Germany's problems. That man was Adolf Hitler. Hitler put all the jews in concentration camps where they did labor and got little to no food. Most people died to hunger and exhaustion, the others died in gas chambers. In the novel The Boy In Striped Pajamas it was bad that the main character, Bruno, was naive about the Holocaust because it’s what lead to his death and if he hadn’t he wouldn’t have felt guilty about lying to Lieutenant Kotler.
Looking at these examples, it is clear to see where the hypothetical (and physical) fences have their uses. According to Erving Goffman, people will behave in a way
