The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne is a historical fiction novel about a german boy named Bruno who meets a young jewish boy named Shmuel during the time of the Holocaust and become good friends. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Bruno (a young german boy) and Shmuel (a young jewish boy) become friends and let nothing get in their way. Throughout the book there is a fence that separates Bruno from Shmuel and the two boys decide to do something about it. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas the fence is a physical barrier, but also represents separation due to race and wealth.
The fence was not only a physical barrier, but also separated the Jewish people from the Germans due to their race. The German soldiers In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas treated the Jewish people terrible only because of their religion. An example of a fence in our time is discrimination due to color of one’s skin. Before America passed the 13th amendment slavery was very common and the treatment of slaves was terrible. Even though we made it illegal there are still small slave populations around the world. Even today we still have terrorist groups that feel like they are the best and are highly racist to other groups of people. Today we have ISIS and they are causing many people to flee syria just like the GErmans caused the Jewish people to flee Germany. A fence is usually just used to show your property lines, but it is a divider. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas the fence is a divider used to keep the Jewish poeple away from the Germans. If people could be tolerant of one another then we would not have any problems and there would be no fences that would be put up due to
