. THE CALEB LAFFERTY STORY Veteran Caleb Lafferty is scared and fearful of what has happened to him. He is a veteran of combat. His joyous return from battle has ignited constant memories of his traumatic past. He feels alienated from the so-called civilized society and his relative world. In short- order, Caleb regrets returning home, He harbors feelings of guilt for abandoning his comrades, his friends, and his extended family. He continually wrestles with notions that he let people down, and is unworthy of surviving. Post Traumatic Disorder (Injury) can strike anyone who has experienced a life-threatening trauma. Every victim who suffers from this mental injury is fighting an unrelenting battle for control of his or her mind and soul. Caleb says, “I can still hear the deafening sounds of war, still see the horrible images of war, and the odor of war, but the eyes and faces of battle. Sometimes it is just unbearable seeing the pleading eyes of war, the death, the killing, and the trepidation of combat.” He feels his sanity breaking down; his anxieties and emotions assume control of his mind. Sometimes it is embarrassing when the tears start flowing. As you have probably determined, the state of emotions Caleb shares is not limited to just individuals who have experienced combat.
