In Edgar Allen Poe’s story, The Cask of the Amontillado, the mood set is “creepy”. First of all, the story takes place in the catacombs. “The drops of moisture trickle among the bones (Poe 64).” The bones referred to in this quote are the bones of ancestors that were laid to rest in the catacombs. To some people, graveyards and cemeteries are creepy. I would assume that underground catacombs would feel the same way. Another way that I think this story is creepy, is how some of the people are dressed up in costumes.”He wore motley (Poe 62).” Motley is a type of costume that could be worn at a carnival. If everyone was dressed up in costumes, then you might not know who is who. Lastly, at the carnival there were people who were drunk. “He accosted
Edgar Allan Poe is a famous writer in writing detective stories and horror stories. One of his horror stories, “The Cask of Amontillado” was talking about how a man took his revenge to his friend. However, to look deeply in this story, I found that this story was not just simply a horror tale about how a man gets his revenge in the safest way. Instead, it also demonstrates much irony in several areas: the title, the event, the season, the costume, the environment, the characters’ personalities, a man’s dignity and cockiness and at the end, the public order. he are

By: Harshul Jain The Cask of Amontillado is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is known for using Gothic conventions in his stories which mostly includes the atmosphere of mystery, oppressiveness to create terror but interestingly he subverts the Gothic conventions by having having human beings, instead of a supernatural element, create most horrible deeds. Poe tries to achieve that horror via the capabilities of the humans. Poe uses unreliable narrator and psyches to propel the story. The Cask of Amontillado is a classic example of such a story. The Cask of Amontillado is a story of 2 friends, Fortunato and Montresor. Montresor in this story is the narrator. Montresor has been
After reading “The Cask of Amontillado”, I didn’t really enjoy it as much as I did with the last two stories. It definitely had a dark, creepy mood to it and I am not a huge fan of that kind of moood. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (1). This was the opening sentence of the story. It gave me a dark feeling that his revenge is going to be bad. I thought this described the mood well because it was not just a foreshadow or a hyperbole, it told me that “The Cask of Amontillado” was going to be dark. I knew that his revenge wasn’t going to be silly or small, I knew it had some part with death. It was nice taking notes on the author before hand because if I didn’t,
Of the reading selection presented, I feel that “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe is the most suspenseful and frightening work of literature. The author skillfully makes use of withholding information, unreliable narrator, shocking twist, and the use of foil to add suspense, develop the plot and deepen our understanding of the characters to catch the reader's attention from beginning to end. Moreover, the darker actions, evil and malicious acts as depicted and highlighted in the short story through the character of Montresor nominates this work of literature as the most suspenseful and frightening piece of writing. Hence, from the very beginning of the short story, we are able to witness how artfully the author withholds information for
Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic short story, “The Cask of Amontillado” discusses the revenge plan of a man named Montresor on his old friend Fortunato. Montressor revealed to the readers that he had been insulted by Fortunato and silently vowed revenge on him. Montressor acted as if he was Fortunato’s friend and smiled with him like they were buddies so that his revenge plot would be undetectable. During a carnival, Montresor told Fortunato that he had purchased a pipe of Amontillado and wanted to know if it was genuine or not. He said that he would instead ask Luchresi who was rumored to have tastes that were a match to Fortunato’s which caused Fortunato to become even more eager to see the wine.
Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” is a goosebump-evoking tale that follows one man’s twisted plot for revenge. Although carnival season is in full-swing above ground, Fortunato finds himself being lead to his death underground in the catacombs. His “past insults” will ensure that he will never again participate in such feasts and merriment; Montresor, his “frenemy”, will make sure of that. As if the story isn’t creepy enough, Poe uses dialogue and sensory details to produce a mood that is both suspenseful and dark.
Edgar Allan Poe is the author of many great pieces of literature including some of the most brilliant and horrifying stories ever written. "The Cast of the Amontillado" is just that, brilliantly written and utterly horrifying. Every element in "The Cast of the Amontillado", like the setting, theme, and imagery, creates the effects of horror, demise and insanity. Poe uses tactics such as dramatic and verbal irony to build suspense and horror; even the character names are ironic. The psychology aspect of this story is what makes it terrifying, this story has no gruesome, blood and guts, death scene. The narrator uses sadistic manipulation and that is what makes this such a great gothic horror story.
In a famous tale written by Edgar Allen Poe known as “The Cask of Amontillado” the main character, Montresor, lured his old friend, Fortunato, deep into the depths of a catacomb and proceeded to murder him as revenge. Many mysterious and horrible things have occurred in catacombs everywhere. Explorers find more and more reasons everyday to travel through various nightmare-filled quarries in an attempt to uncover the history hidden under the surface of Paris, Rome, and other locations spread around the world. These underground cemeteries have a more gruesome history than what you might believe, not as surprising as murder, but it still is quite intriguing.
In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe put a lot of thought into the costumes that Montresor and Fortunato wore. Poe wanted to make the costumes represent of what they are going to do in the story. In the story Fortunato did something to Montresor, so seeked revenge. During the carnival Montresor lured Fortunato into his catacombs, a underground burial of family, and Montresor got Fortunato drunk. Montresor then chained Fortunato to the wall, Montresor then made a wall in front of Fortunato, and then Montresor dropped a fire stick into the wall. The costumes worn by Montresor and Fortunato are appropriate to the story to the story.
By using word choice, Poe created extravagant amounts of suspense. “The Cask of Amontillado” is a great example of how Poe uses literary elements, using them to depict a story of revenge and create a suspenseful mood. This is shown in lines 149 to 152 when the book states the following: “We passed through a range of low arches, descended, passed on and descending again, arrived at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather to glow than flame.” This quote uses imagery to describe the setting and uses sensory details to help create the suspenseful mood. This helps set the tone of the story which contributes to the overall feel of the story which can make or break a piece of literature. This is how Poe expertly uses literary terms in “The Cask of Amontillado” to help produce the suspenseful mood that improves on his pieces of literature.
I have read the Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe. The book is set in a mysterious year of a caravel in Italy. There is a man who wants revenge against another man for an insult, and that man is Montresor and the other man is Fortunato. Fortunato fails to see the trap and makes himself an easy target by being a drunk, not sharp, and egotistical.
The Cask Of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe is about Montresor, tells an unspecified person, who knows him very well, of the day he took his revenge on Fortunato, a fellow nobleman. Edgar Allen Poe wrote the “The Cask of Amontillado.” It is a short story in which the narrator kills one of the other characters. But what was the reason behind the murder?
