Growing up is a difficult transformation for any young person. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, illustrates these ideas through Holden Caulfield, his main figure. By displaying how tough it is for him to grow up and admit that he cannot stay adamant in his belief and realize his interpretation of others is limited. The time that is presented allows Holden more ground for stereotypes and explains why his mindset is so set and why he interprets individuals and circumstances in his own sense. His actions show that he is lonely and desperate for company from anyone. Holden further tries to distance himself from his peers in odd ways which relates to the teenagers who read this book. Ackley is told that Holden’s hunting cap is not used while shooting deer, but for “shoot[ing] people” (Salinger 30). Ackley retracts his comment and interest and attempts to change the subject. Several teenagers of today will feel somewhat lonely or in need of company, but still want others to leave them alone. Salinger crafts his characters in a way so they can easily be seen as relatable to teenagers who read this story. The setting in The Catcher in the Rye plays a large role showing how the characters are developed in this story. These events take place in the late 1940s in New York and at Pencey Prep School. When Holden leaves Pencey to travel to New York, it helps to characterize Holden as trying to be more mature than he might be. Typically, Holden likes to be young. This is until he realizes adults do not take him seriously and “that annoy[s] [him]” causing him to exaggerate and say that “[he is] twelve” when he is sixteen or seventeen (Salinger 94). During this time, it was more important to be taken seriously because of all the serious events going on, such as WWII.
