The Causes Of School Violence

School violence is becoming a worldwide issue, but is a particular problem within the United States. Violence can occur in many ways such as; bullying, school gangs, physical attacks, and fatalities involved with guns. School shootings have been on the rise over the past several years. To bring awareness to school violence, teachers, staff, and parents need to be further trained in noticing warning signs of depression and anger issues which may lead to bullying and disrespectful learning environments for all parties. In addition to awareness within schools, the debate over gun control has been a topic discussed for many years in hopes to curb school shootings.

Like any math equation, to be able to find a solution, we must first understand the problem. We must use this same concept into this public health issue. Research and reports are beginning to provide patterns for understanding the individual’s motive to kill and the characteristics of the different schools where shootings occur (Wike and Fraser 2009). According to Wike and Fraser, making sense of the senseless, holds the key for designing prevention programs. An individual’s drive to commit such crimes can extend from factors such as bullying, their mental health, their environment, and lack of support.

The reality of the situation is that there are many numbers of reasons that a school shooting may happen. There have been 142 school shootings in the United States since 2013, as indicated by a record made by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. There are many reasons we need to use for the reasons for school shootings however the most prevalent one is harassing.

     Ever since the terrible tragedy at Columbine High School, there has been a numerous list of recent school shootings in America. Youth violence is a major issue in today’s society. Many people dread what causes adolescents to be so violent, committing horrible crimes.     

That single question has created a fierce debate over the causes of school shootings and what should be done to prevent them. Experts and pundits have discussed gun control, mental illness, bullying, violent video games, poverty, culture, and even gender roles as possible causes. Unsurprisingly, these sensitive issues cause intense division along political lines; this divisiveness has prevented any federal

Common occurrences in schools include: physical altercations, severe property damage, and bullying behaviors. In this decade, that rate of children inflicting violence on other children and teachers is staggering. Since 1764, the United States has faced the tragedies of school shootings. Since 1982, 148 people have died and 181 people have been injured in school shootings alone. (Statista). I chose to examine three of the most tragic shootings that have happened in the U.S. and will examine the causes and what lead up to the massacres through examination of sources.

    The first recorded school shooting in America dates back to 1764, during Pontiac’s war. Since then, hundreds have occurred, claiming many lives. In the modern era, the rarity of these events has been steadily decreasing, which may be a cause of the confusion that surrounds gun laws and regulations. The new debate over this issue in likely due to one of the worst school shootings in recent years- Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Since that event, over 150 shootings have occurred on school campuses. To deal with these tragic occurrences, the government has opened the debate on gun laws and regulations. But this debate often leads to officials being unable to make up their minds or whole groups of people

    Teens these days suffer through a lot sometimes and this leads to them doing dangerous things like shooting up schools. School shootings have affected the school's attendance and test scores around where past shootings have happened(215 School Shootings in America Since 2013). They could happen at any time and at any school depending on if kids bring their gun(s) to school or not. School shootings are highly dangerous because of the way that they are increasing and how they are making schools get more security, but now researchers are starting to see why school shootings are happening.

Few things are as hard to imagine as the tragedy of a school shooting. On April 20, 1999, twelve students and one teacher were shot and killed at Columbine High School. That’s almost twice as many students as this class has. The attackers, Dylan Klebold and and Eric Harris were both seventeen years old. The teens had their friend, Robyn Anderson (who was 18 years old at the time), help them obtain the weapons.

School shootings have become a major problem not only in South Carolina, but in the United States. School shootings have shockingly become more likely now than ever. A recent report showed that over 230 school shootings have arose since 2013, meaning that there has been at least 1 school shooting per week for the last 4 years. Once students experience these traumatic happenings, the district as a whole receives lower standardized test scores, lessened student enrollment and even frightened parents. Parents begin to lose faith in the school system and no longer find comfort in sending their child to and from that school. By definition, school shootings are anytime a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or school grounds. This connection question’s objective to read about a specific school shooting, it stood out to me that every child has a motive for the school shooting - whether big or small. Therefore, I have conducted research to find out why and how to stop school violence.

This article discusses research and statistics of school shootings, risk factors of school shooters, and how to create a safer learning environment. From 1760-2010, in the USA there has been more than 210 documented shootings. Then from 2010-2014 there has been an average of 20 shootings per year. In most cases the shooters is a student that goes to the school or someone who has a connection to someone at the school (Duplechain and Morris, (2014). Some behavior risk factors that can be indicators are, but not limited to, the shooter was bullied, the have a hyperactivity or learning disorder, history of early aggressive behavior, involvement in gangs, drugs or alcohol, poor

Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook these are but a few cases of fatal school shootings that have plagued the United States history in recent years. School-based violence has gained much attention in the media. Parents are fearful to send their children to school, teachers are becoming armed, and schools have more police patrolling campuses in hopes to deter future endangerment to students and administration. Shootings are the most common and frequent acts of school-based violence and accounts for the highest amount of deaths according to Roberto Flores de Apodaca and fellow co writers’ study of the characteristics of school shootings (Flores de Apodaca et al, 2012, p.365). The question though still stands: what causes these shootings and what can be done to prevent future lives being taken? The answer to this question is not a simple one. There are many factors that play a part in school shootings: the events leading up to the shooting, interpersonal/psychological issues, community, and social culture. To come up with a solution to the problem, one must first look into the causes of the problem because there is not just one cause but many contributing factors. The aim of this paper is to examine causes and factors that lead to shootings in schools and solutions or ways to prevent them.

It is without a doubt that there has been an increase in violent crimes in schools throughout recent years. School shootings continue to become more and more common, especially in North America. Safety concerns for any and all students and staff in schools are at all all time high due to the high number of fatal and non-fatal occurring incidences. Since 2013 to the present, it is estimated that the United States has seen approximately 205 school shootings. Weekly, that is a shocking one shooting on average. Many of these shootings have resulted in the injuries and deaths of multiple of students and staff members. (Everytown Research, 2017) Evidently, school shootings are tragic events that affect so many more people than just the victims. However, these events are also interesting to look at from the psychological and sociological point of views. Through much research, it can be concluded that school shootings are a complex problem that are caused by a mix of improper brain development and societal and media influences which motivate school shooters to emerge. Psychological factors may include struggling with mental illnesses and/or abuse that leads to damaged brain development. Additionally, being bullied and/or the role of the media are examples of sociological factors.

INTRODUCTION:      Since the April 20, 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado I have been looking deeper into the issue of school violence. The number of extremely violent crimes committed by students has been increasing in the last few years.
