Last year, documentary filmmaker Ken Burns released "The Central Park Five", a movie he made with his daughter, Sarah Burns about the false convictions obtained in a 1989 rape
What does the Central Park Five case and Martin Tankleff have in common? In both New York cases, the suspects provided false confessions to law enforcement, and they were found guilty because of interrogation tactics utilized by law enforcement. Several years after these cases, Kassin and Kiechel conducted a study that addresses the issue of false confessions.
The movie “The Central Park Five” was a documentary film. It is talking about five young men were involved in a rape case. One white woman was raped and left for dead in the central park in 1989. Police officers arrested five fifteen years old suspects. The government did not have enough evidence to judge these five black men and Latino Americans; however, because of the racial discrimination, the justices judged them as guilty and sentenced them to jail about 9 to 15 years. After few months, Matias Reyes confessed to the rape case and the lab test also showed that the sperm was matched. The five teenagers were released after the suspect confessed his crime. Directors of the movie, Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David Mcmahon, used
Prospect Park is a 585-acre park located In Brooklyn, a borough in New York City. This borough in particular was in great need for an open space for activities and relaxation, which is exactly what this park provided. Parks are a very important piece of land to a town because it gives people the opportunity to improve their physical health and parks also help strengthen communities because it gives people more opportunities to interact with one another. Public parks are especially very important to have in a big city like New York City because a park gives people a chance to get out of the hustle and bustle, and relax and unwind. The two creators of Prospect Park named Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Bowyer Vaux also designed and created a park in Manhattan called Central Park. Central park is eight hundred-forty acres of city-owned land and is a piece of land that was much needed in 1857 when it was officially opened. Vaux and Olmstead became two well-known architects by building Central Park that soon became a big success, but didn’t equally benefit both the rich and the poor. Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmstead worked in a partnership to build Prospect Park.
From the start, the media's influence in the Central Park Five case is very evident . Before the adolescents’ were even sent to trial, the media had already portrayed the teens as criminals and had essentially declared them guilty of the crime. The way newspapers and television covered the case and talked about the boys made it clear that their intentions were to make people believe these five teenage boys were, in fact, guilty. They used words like “savages” and “wolf pack” to give the audience the impression that these teenage boys were not good people; they gave them a bad image before they could actually explain themselves. By using words like the ones above, the media dehumanizes the teenage boys. These kinds of phrases and words are what will catch the reader's attention and, in some cases, the reader might actually forget that these articles are talking about actual human beings and not a “wolf pack”.
The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine African American students that were admitted to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 4, 1957. The Supreme Court made the decision of desegregating the schools. Carlotta Walls, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, Jefferson Thomas, Minnijean Brown, Melba Pattillo Beals, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Terrence Roberts, and Elizabeth Eckford made history. They went through many tough situations just trying to get inside the school. When the nine students made it inside, the struggle was then to survive with all the racist people there to stop them from reaching their only goal. Superintendent Blossom told them that they could not have a normal high school experience. Torture was present everyday
In 1991, a fire occurred at Cameron Willingham’s house ending the life of his 3 young daughters. He escaped safely with only minor cuts and bruises, but it only resulted in prosecutors charging him with starting the fire. It was argued that he started the fire to cover up the abuse of his girls, even though there is no evidence. His wife, who was not home at the time, testified saying that he never beat up the kids, and in fact spoiled them rotten. Laboratory tests verified, however, that there was a liquid poured all around the house from the porch to start the fire; this was enough evidence for the court to shut down their testimonies. Cameron was executed on February 17th, 2004. Later on, in June 2009 the State of Texas ordered a re-evaluation only to find that he was innocent and that the prosecutor testified against Willingham in return for a secret promise to have his own criminal sentence reduced (Possley).
There was a girl named Elizabeth Eckford and eight other African American teenagers in Little Rock, Arkansas. Like all other schools across the country, was segregated. Only white students were allowed. Everything was segregated, when I say everything I mean pretty much everything . The white people didn’t really want anything to do with the black people.
Ken Burn’s The Central Park Five depicts the story of five young innocent men of color from Harlem and their interaction with the law and the legal system. It specifically focuses on the Central Park jogger case consisting of the beating and rape of Trisha Meili, a twenty-eight year old woman from the Upper East Side who worked on Wall Street. Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise were ultimately found guilty and served six to thirteen years in prison. Although, that night, the worst crime committed by these fourteen to sixteen year old boys was hopping a turnstile.
Carefully evaluating time and events it was found that the "wolf pack" was somewhere else in the Central Park at the time, however very distant to have possibly been involved. Yet all of the Central Park Five were recorded on tape confessing the crime with full details. Surprising? (Weiser,196)
Love Canal is one of the most iconic and appalling environmental tragedies in American history. Dreamed up by a visionary, William T. Love built Love Canal to create a dream community on the fringe of Niagara Falls where all could see it as a dream community. Love built the Canal because he thought that by digging a short canal between two rivers that he could generate electricity to power homes and business in the community surrounding the canal. With the invention of AC power and a depression, the canals power systems were never installed and it remained as a dry canal for quite some time. It’s ironic that it had such grand intentions considering the Love Canal would become one of Americas most polluted superfund sites in American history.
Personality is defined as, “the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.” There are many different theories for what makes up a person’s personality. These theories are classified under 5 general categories. These categories are: biological, behavioural, psychodynamic, humanist, and trait theories. If we look at the trait theories category, two particular theories come to mind. These two theories are, “Big 5 theory” and Eysenck's “Three Traits Theory.” In this essay, I will approach the question, which personality trait perspective is the best way to think about personality? To solve this question I will compare the Big 5 theory to the Three Trait theory.
I am here to tell you five things you, as my teacher should know about me. What do I think is important? Well I think you should know right away that I love to read. When I was younger my mom use to read to me every night before I went to bed. Reading is by far my favorite thing to do in my free time. Next you should know that I don't like to write poetry. I find it hard for me to write. I never really understood poetry. When we did a unit on it in 6th grade I was confused and had trouble writing. On to my number three, which is I like to sing. If a good song comes on the radio you will more than likely hear me sing along. Singing is a way I express myself. I sing anything except country. Four is a little different. My dad and mom are not together.
The Big Five model is broken down into five dimensions, including; openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Openness includes those who are open to experience and are intellectually curious, they may also be open to emotion, and willing to try new things. Conscientiousness individuals display self-discipline, act loyally, and aim for achievement against measures or outside expectations. Additionally, it is related to the way in which individuals control, regulate and direct their impulses. Extraversion is related with ones engagement with the external world, introverts on the other hand have lower social engagement and energy levels. Agreeableness reflects individual differences in
I took the Big Five questionnaire and the LIFE survey. Both of these surveys collect self reported data (S-data). Self reported data is very beneficial to researchers in that it allows them to gain knowledge only known by the individual. Questionnaires and surveys which provide S-data are limited by the answers provided. It is easy to lie or skirt the truth when self reporting data. In my opinion, the Big Five questionnaire was a more accurate assessment of my personality than was the assessment from the LIFE survey.
Throughout the history of human psychology, the development of personality and the factors that contribute to its variations have been widely scrutinised and theorized. According to some of psychologies most acclaimed and experienced psychologists, personality can be stagnant, morphed, molded, developed and uncovered through a range of processes we experience before we are born, after birth and during our lifetime. (Eyesenck, 2004) Veronica Roth’s Divergent exhibits aspects of both Gordon Allports Trait Theory and McCrae and Costa’s Five Factor Model, also known as the Big Five Model. (Eyesenck, 2004) These theories are applicable to the Divergent film in the features of its pot line and within characterization. There accuracies as
