In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, there are multitude of changes throughout the play within Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s wickedness. A metamorphosis takes place deep inside both characters; however, the changes oppose each other. The witches chant: “The weird sisters, hand in hand, posters of the sea and land, thus do go about, thrice to thine and thrice to mine and thrice again, to mine and thrice again, to make up nine. Peace! The charms wound up. (Act 1.2 Lines ) The witches pour prophecies into Macbeth giving him an insight of what is to come in his future as King of Scotland. After receiving a letter from Macbeth, her first thought is about hoe to convince Macbeth to become King. She thinks to herself: “Yet do I fear thy nature it is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness… “Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear and chastise with the valor of my tongue all that impedes thee from the golden round.” (Act 1.5 Lines 13-15 and Lines 22-25). When he returns home, she says “Look like the time; bear welcome on you eye” (Act 1.4 Line 61). She implies that with the strength she has she will over power Macbeth thought and get him to the throne to make it their own. Lady Macbeth has a lot in mind and through all the thoughts that are cramming into her head only one stuck, and it was to kill King Duncan while he is asleep. It is time for their rebellious move to become the new reign of Scotland. Macbeth is still not up for the murder of his King because King Duncan is loyal to Macbeth as he is with King Duncan. Lady Macbeth does not care she would love to go ahead and kill him and become Queen of Scotland for her to conduct this horrible crime she has in mind. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have to wait till everyone leaves the castle. Later on that night, Macbeth is feeling delusional he starts to imagine the dagger that he will kill King Duncan with. Lady Macbeth has the power over her husband to persuade him into doing anything she requests. She manipulates Macbeth with incredible efficiency by overruling all of his thoughts and changing his perspective on the present. Even though the many tasks that need to be completed are difficult to understand why they need to be done, Lady Macbeth will always convince Macbeth to do it. Her husband often tells her that she has a “masculine soul” which is obvious due to her murderous and envious actions. Macbeth shows his love by saying a few compassionate words in his letter to Lady Macbeth about the meeting with the three weird sisters. Lady Macbeth shows that she cares for him by planning the murder of King Duncan so Macbeth can become king. By the end of the play Macbeth doesn’t care about his wife’s health that much, when she dies his taught was she was bound to die one day.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have changed drastically throughout the play. One goes from evil to scared and the other goes from scared to evil. You can see the change between these characters obviously by their actions. Lady Macbeth turned murderous after hearing the prophecy that Macbeth would be king from the witches. Lady Macbeth was a strong force leading to Macbeth’s killing of Duncan.
That night Macbeth ends up killing Duncan. Just before the murder Macbeth is walking down the hall when he has a vision of a dagger with a bloody tip, which is pointed for Duncan’s room. He thinks to himself, “Art tho not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation” (II.1.36-38). During the murder Macbeth makes a mistake that angers Lady Macbeth. He has forgotten to leave the daggers with Duncan’s guards, and she must now go and return them. Initially Macbeth is upset over the murder, but Lady Macbeth tells him it is as easy to forget about as washing the blood away with water. Once Macbeth gains the knowledge that he shall not be harmed until Great Birnham wood come to Dunsinane Hill, he gains much confidence as he believes he cannot be harmed by anybody or anything.
