Liesel Meminger: A Growing Character In The Book Thief

The story of the book thief begins in Molching,Germany during the early 1939 Nazi era. The story is narrated by death whom is beyond puzzled as to why humans have so much anger towards one another, as well as why they behave in the manners they do. Although death was a bystander viewing the lives of Liesel, the Hubermann’s, Rudy, and Max he witnesses how they each grew and changed for the better. Liesel Meminger is the first protagonist character of the story. When she arrives in Molching, Germany to be with the Hubermans she is sad and broken, due to the loss of her mother and brother. Each night she would lie down to go to bed, she would have nightmares of her mother and brother being taken away from her, realizing how alone she was. On the other hand, she gains a trust in Hans, who helps her to read and learn a value of words. I believe Liesel Meminger is a growing character in the book because, she starts out getting teased in the novel for not understanding words or knowing how to read. Upon being given the right to visit Frau Hermann’s library she realizes how much she loves words and how much power they allow you to possess. As the wars go on Liesel is able to read to her family in the basement during the bombings. Her comforts of reading can be compared to those of Hans’ when he plays his accordion, or rolls his cigarettes. Although Liesel loves words she also realizes that words can also be bad, in the way that Hitler uses them to manipulate his population. She
