The Characteristics Of Metaphysical Poetry

Metaphysical poetry can be defined as a term to classify poems that share the common characteristics of: highly intellectualized, use of strange imagery, frequent paradox, and contain “extremely” complicated thought. (Cite). Although, Metaphysical poetry isn’t considered a genre, many authors of this group didn’t know, at the time, that they were part of a classification. The term metaphysical applies to matters outside of poetry as well, and usually relates to questions that cannot be explained by science; it often questions the nature of reality, which is studied in metaphysical philosophy. As metaphysical poets and their works have been studied there has many characteristics, that combined, create metaphysical poetry. The characteristics that metaphysical poetry contains paradoxes, puns, and also the strange comparison’s called conceits. Often times metaphysical poetry is concerned with religious allusions and the perception of the world, in a humorous way. One of the best known metaphysical poets was John Donne, he was the first poet to master metaphysical conceit in a way that still, to this day, makes his poems iconic. As Donne mastered metaphysical poetry, he began to leave his mark on other authors, even in different genres, such as music. Kanye West is considered the first metaphysical rapper, because like Donne, West also uses religious allusions and conceit in a majority of his music.
