The novel Hope Was Here is a perfect representation of mine and many other peoples lives. I have lost someone important in my life, had to meet new people once or twice and especially had to work hard for the things that I want. The main characters especially Braverman and Addie, have struggles in their life that are very difficult to overcome. Braverman, the head chef of the diner, had a major struggle that took many years to overcome. At a young age his father left him and his family, he had to be the male figure of the family. That meant going to work to earn money to support his mom and two sisters instead of going to college. Hope, a friend that eventually becomes his girlfriend, didn’t know about this until Jillian, a lady helping with the mayor campaign, told her. Jillian said, “He’s a good guy Hope. He’s staying home to help support his mom and sisters. His dad walked out on the family.” and Hope said, “My heart did a backflip” (Bauer 94). Hope really cares about Braverman, so for her to see even more good things from him, it makes her feel good. Eventually, with all of the money he saved and the help of G.T. and his mother, he was able to go to college.
This novel relates to real life very well because everybody has problems or struggles they need to overcome, just like Braverman and Addie. I think Addie is a tough person because she has dealt with so much, but she doesn't necessarily let it affect her that much. Initially, she had to take care of her niece,
I have read the book The Coldest Winter Ever, by Sistah Souljah and I find the plot of the book intriguing and life like because I actually do feel like I am the main character in this book. I relate to the main character Winter because we are the same age and we have experienced similar things. In one part of the book, Winter Santiaga had to explain to us how being in a family with drug dealers is hard to deal with. She explains to us how her father, Ricky Santiaga spoiled her, her mom and her little sisters. I can relate to that part because that’s how my family was. Some of the things that were mentioned in this book were adult like and had an adult tone and that had caught my eye. All of the things she had to go through in this book made me realize that life isn’t what is seems. She had to go through with losing her mother and father to the system. She had lost her sisters to foster care and then she had to go to foster care. This book can actually speak to young girls and this is why I love Sister Souljah’s books.
In the novel, Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman, the author shows the amount of determination and courage that one girl uses in her life. Catherine faces many challenges in her life but she works her way through them. She later finds out that after the amount of suffering she went through that there is brightness for her. Later she later learns that everything works out for the better. Every bad thing eventually turns good in the long run the only challenge is time.
Hope has moved many times, she hates it every time but she thought her move to Wisconsin would be the worst yet but she finally found where she belonged. Right after GT passed, they closed the diner for a while. Soon after they opened back up, the were in the “in the weeds”. You could tell she was happy. “I looked at Flo and grin. We’re in the weeds. “Look sharp now,” Addie shouts from the kitchen.” (pg 185) and also, “those women grin so bright.” (pg 185) Overall it’s a happy page. Everyone is happy and they all learned to be a kind happy person from GT, including Hope. They are also happy because they know that’s what GT would
It is the story of a band of refugees attempts to escape the World War Two battlefield with nothing but hope and each other. The most obvious example of a character depending on hope to survive is Emilia, a fifteen year old Polish girl. Emilia probably has the worst experience of all the people in the novel, but she is rarely unhappy. This probably has to do with how much hope she had of survival. Throughout the journey she is always remembering her childhood in Poland and using that as motivation to continue. While reflecting on her time in Poland, she whispers, “There were no ghettos no armbands. I often fell asleep to a breeze floating through my open window. It’s true. It was like that once” (Sepetys 268). Another example of Emilia relying on hope to make it through the journey is her mental reaction to being pregnant. While the real story is extremely disturbing, Emilia tells herself that the baby’s father is the boy who she lived with before the war. That story is what gets her through the war because the moments where she remembers that the real father is a Russian soldier, she becomes depressed and scared. However, Emilia wasn’t the only person who relied on hope to get through the journey. Florian has an entirely different story of his own, and hope plays just as big of a role. He is a German soldier who has a plan to go against Hitler. The reason he is going on this
Today's reading began with how Hope sits down with one of her 11 scrapbooks, the one she calls The Dads scrapbook. The pages are filled with magazine pictures of men who looks like the father she’s been dreaming of in her head. She imagines having a conversation with her imaginary dad about not fitting in. She gets to work by 5:00 a.m. Braverman isn’t there yet and she admits that she misses him. The story was mostly about how when she was at work for the day she talks about how they were cracking jokes about how there is this show that flips sentences like “My uncle is a genius”.
Countless countries and beliefs were made possible because of hope. This is the same in literature. Most ideas and actions or risks are based upon hope, and is usually proceeded with persistence. Through the school year many units were covered that would be able to defend that statement. The “Slavery and Civil War” unit was one that talked about the hope of being free. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck told the story of two men with a big dream of having no worries. Finally, Stanley Gordon West’s, Until They Bring The Streetcars Back was a novel that was about how one boy did everything he could to help some stranger.
A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard is completely told in her point of view, more specifically the child version of herself. This feature of the story really puts you in her shoes and you understand how a young child thinks and grows up in a hostile, unhealthy household for 18 years, as she did. I believe the overall theme that she is portraying is to never lose help no matter how hopeless things may seem. She was taken for 18 years but still everyday she managed to look that the good and believed one day things would turn around for her and her children.
The novel I was here by Gayle Forman, is a sad beautiful tragic novel. This novel is about a girl name Cody discovering her best friend Meg’s death. Cody is shocked to find out Meg had committed suicide, since she thought they shared everything with each other. Meg’s parents Joe and Sue, asks Cody to go to Meg’s apartment to pack her things. When Cody goes to her apartment, she discovers that she does not know much about Meg. This novel would be recommended for someone who loves mysteries, romance, and adventures.
The value of pursuing an impossible dream leads people to dead ends. In my own life I have dealt with this issue on several occasions. We get caught up in materialistic desires, and appearances. Through self discovery, everyone is capable of gaining self confidence without being absorbed in our looks. The conflict between the real and ideal incorporates consuming dreams about how I could better myself inside and out in my current life which ties together the book To Be Seen, and The Birthmark in failing to achieve internal and external goals.
A different book I read over the summer shows hope in a much more realistic way. The Cellar by Natasha Preston is a twist turning nail biting thriller. When Summer is kidnapped by a serial killer and hostage holder named Clover, she is given a whole new name and a new identity. Clover a psychopathic man with a messed up childhood is creating his perfect family, by kidnapping girls who he finds on the streets or raining late at night. When Summer finds herself lost as she is walking home from a party she wakes up to be in a cellar and finds 3 other girls who are calling her Lily. The 3 other girls have all been in that cellar for a minimum of 1 year and all have flower names which was given to them by Clover. Each chapter alternates between Summer and her boyfriend Lewis’ point of view, as Lewis is looking for Summer day and night everyday. Both of them are not giving up and hope is the only thing keeping them
This summer I read an excellent book called That Summer by Sarah Dessen. This book has a lot of twists and turns in the plot, and it made me want to keep reading. This character goes through a lot of tough times in her life and she has to learn how to grow and adapt to these horrible changes. Since her sister does not like her, she has no one to relate to these changes with, which makes her life that much harder. Haven, the protagonist, never has a life she is satisfied with!
I also relate to not feeling good enough about myself due to the social classes that surround me. Like Olive I'm not popular, this sometimes makes me feel unimportant and useless. The book helped me better understand everyone is different but still amazing at the same time.
The novel All the Bright Places, written by Jennifer Niven, positively impacted my life. I read the book the summer before my junior year and it taught me to not wish away my time at home. I related to the book in many ways and it was like the author was writing specifically for me. The novel is set in small town Indiana and the main characters hate their lives. This novel changed my outlook on the small Indiana town that I live in.
There is one book that I have read that stands out from the other books. This book is called My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. My Sister’s Keeper has been my go-to book to feel an array of emotions from sadness, to happiness. When I first read this book, I was in the 5th grade and during that school year, my cousin was diagnosed with stage four cancer. This book taught me to be patient and understanding with the doctors even though it felt like they were not trying. To see my cousin in pain from the chemoradiation meant that the medicine was working. However, most importantly, the book taught me to give and receive the love that might not be returned some days, but in the end, the person would appreciate it. My family is known for getting
The novel “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” challenged me like no other piece of literature that I have read. The plot surrounds an old amusement park mechanic, Eddie, who is unhappy with the way his life transpired. He felt that his time on Earth was useless and had no impact on the lives of others. When Eddie is killed in a park accident, he meets five important people from his past life. The people show him why his life progressed like it did and helped him let go of regret. At the time of reading, the novel related to my life immensely. I had just received news that I would not be able to play baseball or football over the coming year due to torn ligaments in my ankle. I felt that I had no purpose; sports were my way of feeling important.
