The choropleth map is the most prevalent thematic map in modern society. Understanding a choropleth is an undemanding process, making it a viable option for a broader audience. They're popularity stems from the fact that much of our data is reported by predefined areal units, such as census data, and so we are accustomed to thinking of the world as divided into spatial units like census tracts and counties. The choropleth map pictured above, serves the purpose of promulgating the rate of heart disease-related deaths across the United States. Choropleth maps are fairly easy to use and spatial information is most clearly conveyed through the use of these maps; however, they can be inaccurate and can promote prejudices. The cartographer of
In the contemporary society, there are an increasing number of people paying great attention to child’s behavior. At the same time, a hot debate has also appeared, revolving around this topic. Some people believe that child’s behavior is a reflection of their home life. However, in the story “Burn Yours Maps”, was written by Robyn Joy Leff, he totally disagrees with this point. In his story, the protagonist, Wes wants to be a Mongolian and imagines his life as a nomad Mongolian. This idea from him doesn’t come from his family, neither from his mother nor father. None is Mongolian in Wes’s family, even his grandpa Firth was telling stories to Wes, but he never referred to Mongolian. It is clearly to see that Wes, himself wants to be a Mongolian without any reflection of his family. Leff uses two points of view and an emotional writing technique to support his arguments. The most important point is that the conflict between three main characters through the whole story. Wes’s father, Connor wants to prevent him to be a Mongolian and his mother, Allies kind of understands her son and tying to persuade Conner and protect Wes in her own way at the same time. Leff also uses conversation between Conner and Allies to express that Wes’s behavior is not reflection form them. In the end, Leff uses his unique emotion writhing technique to show that even Wes’s parents are not support him to be a Mongolian, he still insists his own idea to be what kind of person that he wants
Chapter one in the book, Human Geography, gives a timeline of the changes that have occurred since the creation of planet Earth. The author, John Rennie Short, explained how truly powerful the earth itself is. It has the ability to wipe out humanity. We often blame nature when natural disasters happen, but perhaps the human race may have something to do with the cause of environmental hazards like volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
The product that I choose for my commodity chain project was the Apple IPhone that has been one of the most popular cell phone devices since its initial release in June of 2007. The idea around me picking the iPhone revolved around the fact that I have owned every generation Apple IPhone since the first generation IPhone release and am very familiar with its technology and background. In the initial part of this paper, I will discuss the rudimentary junctures in the iPhones commodity chain such as manufacturing and retail sale. In the latter half of my paper, I will then specifically investigate into the people who physically produce the iPhone and their living conditions, ways of life, and overall character. It is important to understand that even though Apple is a very profitable company that sells successful, unique products, they still use a contract manufacture known as Foxconn that is known for their harsh work environments and poor labor treatment.
I decided to sketch a map of Langley High School, which is the high school I attended from 2011-2015 in McLean, Virginia. While I have lived on the Colgate campus for almost two years, I find that I am not as familiar with Colgate’s campus due to its large scale compared to my high school campus. I attended Langley for four years, and I often spent a majority of my days at school, both during school hours and after for sport’s practices and games. As a result, I became very familiar with the layout of the campus, the function of different areas, and the overall dynamic of the school, both socially and culturally. Now that I am a Langley alumni, I went back to visit during Thanksgiving break 2015 and 2016, and was able to observe the school from an outside perspective. Through my observations, I became aware of different aspects of Langley that I had not noticed as a student. For example, the different in the tense and stressful dynamic of the second floor, and the more relaxed feeling of the bottom floor was something I did not notice until I walked through the halls after graduating. Additionally, the clear hierarchy and social divisions that exist as a result of grade differences was more prominent as a non-student. In my sketch of Langley, I represented more socially important spaces by drawing them to a larger scale, and less important spaces to a smaller scale. I also indicated the changing role of a space throughout the school day by using different
The map is a functional region. A functional region is one with a node or a focal point and diffuses outward. On this map, Denver is the focal point. All flights are based in Denver and then extend outward. The concentration of flights are higher, when you are closer to Denver and slowly decrease as you move out of the US.
With the numerous European geoportals, a specific issue related to visual hierarchy is coming from the landcover data derived from the CORINE datasets. The default symbology uses strongly saturated colours that are prone to be interpreted as foreground information and often provide poor contrast with other information in the map (Figure
Maps often contain a scale to indicate to the reader how far a given distance on a map is in the real world.
In 1992, however, there were no blank spots on the map - not in Alaska, not anywhere. But Chris, with his idiosyncratic logic, came up with an elegant solution to this dilemma: he simply got rid of the map.” (Krakauer 174) Chris wanted to entrust his own sense of direction rather than whatever the map says. This also could have prevented his death because if he’d had a map he would’ve seen the cable and basket that spanned over the Teklanika River and he could have
“Choosing a Map for Life,” by M. Scott Peck, “The Allegory of the Cave,” by Plato, The Truman Show and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes describe the true reality in our world. They make us think about wherever that is true or false. Also, in order to find the truth, we have to get out, discover the world around and revise it.
Seuss went about displaying this map. Instead of going with a simple infographic covering Malaria’s stats, they instead choose to make it more picture oriented. I feel this approach, was the best way to go about it. Based on the simple notion being that, pictures speak louder than words. With this map being primarily picture based, you can put this map anywhere and the message of the map is understandable. “ Don’t mess with Malaria” It’s a map whose message reaches both adults and kids. This map is what break the language barrier, among other nations. Now was this Dr. Seuss and the Army intention, that’s where the debate comes
This changes the perception of the maps meaning. In the first week of lecture, the professor and the reading brought up an important question. She brought up, “what are you really seeing and what pieces are missing?” This creates a gap between perception and knowledge. Sight is more important than any words, and that is why this map is important. People can bring up a problem, but once they see the problem it becomes more tangible. An important reading is the “NoDAPL Map blog.” This shows how people use maps to manipulate situations. This blog supports my idea that map-makers choose what to show their selected audience, which shows the importance of what to include and exclude. If I showed too much roads or in-depth details, then it would distract the viewer from seeing the change of
Cartography is the science of creating maps. In recent news, a new study has found that many Canadian maps are drawn incorrectly. The maps combined two completely different islands and also contained incorrect references of three different provinces. Anderson Vacations, distributor of these incorrect maps, has since issued two apologies to the public.
The mapping of malefaction and delinquency has been around for many years and the conception that delinquency is caused by environmental factors has long been debated. A consequential characteristic of early research into criminality was the utilization of CHARTS and maps to show spatial distributions of delinquency and malefaction. These research methods were kenned as the "Cartographic School" approach. Research conducted within this approach fortified environmental explications of criminality, but could not provide a fundamental theory that contributed to the explication of these results. Instead, the findings were often used to point out the lack of morality in categorical population groups or ethnicities (Shoemaker, 1996).
The plates in our planets surface move on account of the serious warmth in the Earth's center. This causes liquid rock in the mantle layer to move. It moves in a way called a convection cell that structures when warm material ascents, cools, and finally sink down. As the chilled material sinks off, it is warmed and rises once
Identify on a map the location of the two communities and provide a geographical description to support the map.
