Broken Relationship of people due to New Technology
In 21st century, technology is playing a major role in our everyday life. The technology is changing not only the world, but also the daily lives of each and every one of us. In other words, people are surrounded by the technology, and the technological advancements impact differently on our lives. We cannot deny the benefits of the advancements and conveniences we have gained from the new innovations. Even though the new technology has positive effects, it also presents with some unfortunate consequences for our personal life. In short, it can be said that the new technology can break down personal relationship.

Earlier in the book, Mae and Merce used to be in a love relationship (75). Even though their love affair does not work out, they choose to be a friend with each other as they don’t want to lose their communication. This shows us that the relationship between Mae and Mercer was good until Mae decides to go transparent. After Mae is on transparent by applying small lens camera all the time, their relationship start to get worse. The reason is because Mercer is against the idea of transparency. He defends the idea of the privacy. Thus, Mercer gives a letter to Mae’s mother for her in order to express his feeling about her transparency project. In the letter, Mercer is saying that “I cannot see you anymore, Mae…. I cannot be your friend and also part of your experiment….” (336). This quote shows that Mercer ends his relationship with Mae thanks to her transparency with the new technology. From here, we can see that the new technology has destroyed the relationship between Mae and Mercer. Other major event at the end of the story was that while presenting a new technology called “SoulSearch”, Mae chooses Mercer, her ex-boyfriend, and pursues him with drones’ camera views. As the result, Mercer drives his car in order to escape from the drones, but ends up driving off a bridge to kill himself (460). In the beginning of the book, Mae and Annie used to be a friend. We can see that they were close friends since they were roommates in college. One time, Annie takes Mae to hospital and also sleep next to her all night when Mae breaks her jaw. Moreover, Annie finds the place for Mae at her company, the Circle, to work with her as well (2). This indicates that they were in a good and strong relationship. Later in the story, Mae, after being on transparent by applying a high-tech camera, starts to have a closed relation with three Wise Men, especially Bailey. Furthermore, she, with her transparency work of being on camera most of the time, appears to get more successful and popular, making her become an important person in the Crile. In this regards, Annie becomes increasingly unhappy and starts to feel jealous of Mae. Annie begins ignoring and arguing with her old friend. Based on the conversation between Mae and Annie in the story, Annie is telling Mae that “Mae. I don’t want this sound rude, but the best thing for me right now is to get back to my desk….” (354). This argument message shows us that Annie feels angry with Mae, leading to damage to their relationship due to her transparency project. The tension between them gets higher after this conversation.
