Celie has been emotionally abused by multiple characters in The Color Purple. Celie was frequently told she was an undesirable, ugly woman only meant to be used by other. She began to feel very stupid and illiterate. The day her sister Nettie was forced to leave her side had destroyed her emotionally. Nettie was the only person she loved, other than her children, and the only person she felt loved her back. Celie was also given away unwilling as a wife. to Mr.______ who treated her terribly. Celie uses god as a symbol of hope to her life and happiness. The Color Purple, by Alice Walker is a story about the life of an african american woman before world war 2. Alice portrays real life problems women during that time faced. The main character Celie experiences domestic violence, racism, jealousy, homosexual curiosity, motherhood, and poverty. The story is made up of letters Celie writes to God, her sister, Nettie, and letters Nettie writes to Celie. The letters all vary in length. The main conflict in the story is that Celie has never questioned her rights or what she wants, she has always done as she has been told and never gone against
Celie is abused and raped by her Pa, who takes away her children after they’re born. Eventually, Pa marries Celie off to a man who is just as abusive as Pa. Celie’s new husband, Mr.__, simply marries Celie to take care of his four children, look after of his house, and work in his fields.
In Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Celie leads a life filled with abuse at the hands of the most important men in her life. As result of the women who surround and help her, Celie becomes stronger and overcomes the abuse she experienced. The three most influential women in Celie’s life are her sister Nettie, her daughter-in-law Sofia, and the singer Shug Avery. These are the women who lead Celie out of her shell and help her turn from a shy, withdrawn woman to someone who was free to speak her mind and lead her own independent life.
Throughout the book, The Color Purple, the main character, Celie suffers abuse from many male characters. This book is written in Celie’s point of view. She writes it as though she is writing letters to God. She starts in a home with her father who abuses her. When she marries, her husband continues to abuse her.
For more than a hundred years women have struggled to gain their place in society as equals to men. For more than a hundred years women have yearned for the same basic rights men enjoy. For more than a hundred years women have scratched and clawed their way to even be considered equivalent to men, but for as long as time can tell, women have always come second to man. This fight for social justice and equality has become known as feminism.
When the novel opens, Celie is a 14 year old uneducated black girl being raised by her father and a sick mother. As a result, she has two children that are taken by her father who is also their father. Celie assumes the were killed or sold. Her mother is increasingly ill and eventually dies. The comfort of knowing that the oppressive man who rapes her isn’t blood related to her in any way and that her children aren't actually her siblings gives her a sense of freedom and relief. This encourages Celie to form her own identity, not as Alphonso’s daughter nor victim, but rather as an individual, now that she knows the accurate story behind her mother and biological father. Although Celie is not able to become completely free from Alphonso nor Albert right away after reading these letters, she is one step closer to obtaining freedom; she feels free spiritually and emotionally learning the truth that has been hidden from her for several
Celie is viewed as the dumb and ugly sister who won’t get anywhere in life. Her father makes her marry a man with children, his name is not revealed, so they just call him mister. Mister originally wanted Nettie but settled for Celie because her father wouldn’t let her be married because of her inexperience with men and children. Celie marries Mister and her abuse continues. The sisters find out towards the end of the story that their father Alphonso, was actually only their stepfather. Celie meets many characters as she is trapped in this dangerous marriage, that help her find her true identity and stand up for herself. The characters that help
For the Steven Spielberg film essay project, I decided to watch the movie The Color Purple. The movie strongly focuses on the theme of slavery and discrimination towards African American individuals. The movie takes place in the 1930’s. The movie contains the film elements of shot types and lighting, characterization, and setting. The film elements, utilized by Steven Spielberg, strongly allow the film and its’ story to come to life for the viewer.
In The Color Purple, it appears Celie has a life of filled with misery. By the age of 14, she
