The Color Purple by Alice Walker is a novel about the struggle of Celie, a poor uneducated black woman who finds herself with the help of a blues singer named Shug Avery. Each character plays a major role in the strengthening of each other. From the beginning of the novel the characters of Celie, Nettie and Sofia either became stronger or lost strength through tough times. Nettie who is Celie's sister was very intellectual and recognized the importance of an education from a young age. Sofia is an assertive woman who has never backed down from a fight yet her assertiveness and her honesty and willingness to act on emotions gets her jail time. After an abusive relationship with Harpo, the pregnant Sofia stays confident and isn't intimidated by any man who think they have power over her. Sofias strength is depicted after she decides to leave Harpo and his abuse. A black woman was a virtual prisoner in the system, they feel powerless to the rule of their husbands. Sofia has always been an excellent sister to her sister and a devoted mother. Sofias high temper gets her in trouble after an altercation with the mayor. Sofia spends 12 years in jail and is changed after her time with Mrs.Millie, losing much of her strength and dignity. She begins to resent white people and the way shes been treated.
