During my volunteer hours I learned a lot about my own community I that I have not been able to experience. For example I have never been able to participate in so many writing programs and workshops in my local high school, this is because I also did not attend my own local high school because my mother did not allow me to instead, she asked me to attend a charter school. By partnering with LA826, I was able to attend different writing workshops where I would help different high school student write essay, cover letters, and personal statements. Furthermore I believed that most of my activities consisted of just being able to listen to some of the students.

As surprising as it may sound, I have been doing community service since the sixth grade and it is a new experience each time. It all began with a community clean up known as 'Keep McAllen Beautiful' as we got there everyone seemed excited to be there. It was beautiful to see such unity inside of my community, and I decided from then on that I would like continue helping out where it is needed. As I joined the National Honor Society my chances of providing my services increased, and I decided that I would assume a position of leadership when needed. I participated in my schools Beautification Project by cleaning up the school grounds and surrounding area. I pulled weeds, planted flowers, laid mulch, picked up trash and painted. This was important to me because it allowed me to give back to the area I both live and attend school. I have baked and distributed cookies to families at the Ronald Me Donald House. I have also prepared snack packs for families at the Ronald Me Donald House- prepared bags with pudding cups cheese crackers, chips, granola bars and muffins. These were provided to families so that they could have access to a snack while at the hospital with their child. The National Honor Society is for high school seniors who have “demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character”. At John Marshall we really push the “service” area. There are so many different reason I wanted to be a part of NHS; It gives me satisfaction that I was able to become a member of such an elite society, it also is very rewarding to give back to a community that has done so much for me. Each service project I have volunteered at has taught me something different. Since July, I have volunteered at eleven different projects (over 32 hours), and I have learned something new every time. I am a volunteer for Camp Kesem, a program that provides support and puts on a summer camp for children and teens whose parents have been affected by cancer. The past year I have volunteered with the organization at "bar-canning" and "tailgate-canning" events, where I have fundraised for and informed people about Camp Kesem. This past summer I participated in Camp Holy Cross where I donated my time ad counseled kids from eight to three each day. I worked in the field thus I had to set up games, instruct them and take care of the kids while they were there. Another event I participated in with my church was the soup kitchen. Between band practice, studying, and officer meetings, I find time to volunteer. Through my 3 clubs, I have completed over 250 hours of volunteer service. Many of my service hours have come from HOSA, where I can obtain clinical experience through volunteering at nursing homes, health fairs, or hospitals. Throughout the past four years of high school, I have done my best to try and stay actively involved in the community. I have been presented with some amazing volunteer opportunities such as Huron Safety Town, STAR Leadership Camp, American Red Cross, and Huron High School Girl’s Basketball Biddy Program. I spent over 24 hours at Huron Safety Town where I was able to help young students, mainly those going into Kindergarten, learn how to stay safe while on the road. I was also able to spend over 24 hours at STAR Leadership Camp where I was a councilor to those going into the sixth grade. I made sure that each student understood the importance of being a leader in today's society and how important they are to Huron’s community. Through National Honor Society I have been able to maintain in constant contact, approximately 10 hours, with the American Red Cross by volunteering in monthly blood drives. I have also dedicated 16 hours of my time to those young girls interested in someday being a varsity basketball player through the Biddy Basketball Program.

I currently have 85 volunteer hours, but I continue to volunteer. I volunteered at my local branch of Habitat for Humanity where I cleaned and restored furniture that was later sold. The profit was donated to local charities in my county. I also volunteered at the local International and Greek Festivals. I assisted the vendors at these festivals. These festivals expose the people of my city to different elements of many cultures. I joined and assisted the FSU Office of College Access Programs, which is an office at my local university where a group of college readiness programs are located. These programs provide help to high school students in my county, and I help by doing tasks for the people who work there and helping at their events. I volunteered at local museums and participated in The Second Harvest Food Drive, an annual event in which my school collects cans for our local Second Harvest Food

During the my sophomore year of high school, I decided to join a club at my school name Intercat. Intercat is a great way to help out in my community and my school. Over the time I contribute a positive change in my school by joining the Teen Suicide Prevention and Awareness which we learn how to help someone out if we notices that they are going to a hard time. I volunteer and participate in activities to better the community and my surroundings. Over the last three years, I have spent many hours working on our class activities including homecoming festivities. I worked nearly every concession stand that my class sponsored last year and a few concession stands that the clubs I’m a part of sponsored. For the last four years, I’ve been a member of the Eisleben Lutheran Church. In these four years, I’ve read scriptures to the congregation, participated in teaching during Vacation Bible School, and volunteered at dinners to raise money. For the past number of years, I have taken part in volunteer activities on my own, and as a member of the National Honor Society. Multiple times through the past four years, I participated in children’s holiday parties at my church. My main tasks were assembling displays and games, and assisting children who wanted to play one. I have also fundraised for many charities concerning life-threatening illnesses such as cystic fibrosis, cancer, and diabetes. During my freshman year, I completed nearly 25 hours of community service at Julia Boyer Reinstein Library. Besides restocking library materials and cleaning up around the building, I also assisted many people who were looking for certain items or had general questions. Our country’s current economic crisis is drastically affecting not just individuals, but businesses and organizations as well, especially when it comes to those that are non-profit. Funding for necessary programs held by non-profit organizations, such as Moses Cone Behavioral Health, have been cut annually, making it more difficult for their institutions to prosper. Due to these substantial declines in donations and funds, local volunteers are needed now more than ever. I chose to volunteer at Moses Cone Behavioral Health Hospital to help combat this loss in funding.

During my summer breaks I volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank. I do specific shifts such as labeling meat products and packaging them or storing food boxes with non perishables (food cans, cereal boxes) and boxing them for one family. I am a current member of Key Club, it also partnered with Second Harvest. Every Thursdays, I help out in Key Club by cleaning the campus and recycling to make the school more environmentally friendly. Outside of school, I attend Aktion Club and monthly car washes to help fundraise for DCON and grow relationships with people in our community that are disabled. From sophomore to senior year, I volunteered at the Glide Memorial Church, an organization that helps to serve food to the low- income and homeless. I decided to volunteer at Glide because I want to give back to the community that I am part of by mitigating the issue of homelessness in San Francisco. On the first day of volunteering, I was sent to pass trays of food to people. I like volunteering there because I enjoy seeing the smiles on the people’s faces when I pass the trays to them. As I continue to volunteer, I was placed in many positions and challenged myself with different and new responsibilities. I did clear up, help people to clear up their mess and clear up the trash. I help fill in food in the trays and pass the other volunteers.
