There are many non-governmental organizations around the world that is fighting on behalf of human rights; however, one non-governmental organization that has singled itself out to deals with human rights issues is Amnesty International. The reason I have chosen this organization is because its operation and activities is found in many, if not in all countries of the world. Founded in 1961 by the British lawyer Peter Benenson in London, the organization has grown to over 7 million volunteers who take injustice personally. (Amnesty International, n.d). Undoubtedly, there have been many problems all over the world that involved torture, abuse and illegal arrests of police and army who are excessively intoxicated with powers to unleash mayhem on the society. The consequences of these human rights abuses are that many people were brutally murdered and others simply went missing. Amnesty international has, however, been involved in mass campaign against these human rights abuses and their efforts have rescue many people who would have suffered untold suffering. This information has proven to be valuable in sensitizing the world on various abuses in many part of the world. Arguably, the work of Amnesty International is very vital and important in human existence. Through the reporting of the organization, genocides and mass killings have been averted in many countries. Human lives are preserved and suffering of civilian has drastically reduced over the years. Amnesty International unequivocally plays the role of a whistle blower who uses its powers to fight the injustices committed against poor citizens in many countries and region of the
Imagine for a moment what it would be like if the entire population of Sonoma County, California was killed, and twenty years later not many people knew a great deal about it. When over 500,000 people, primarily Tutsis, were killed in the Rwandan genocide in 1994, it was a great tragedy. However, no one rushed to the country’s aid. Now it is vital that the horrors of the instance that violated the human rights of so many, is not forgotten. Human rights are the universal actions and objects that all people are entitled to because they are human. Human rights have been violated in numerous ways over time, typically as a result of a person in power having their own best interests in mind rather than the peoples´. Various groups, such as Amnesty
In both history and present day, many human rights violations have occurred in countries residing within the UN. Despite the attempts that international influence created through the UN, many countries such as the Soviet Union conducted serious human rights violations through attempts to quell uprisings or anti-government movements. Even in the present day, countries such as North Korea and China have been committing drastic human rights violations, despite existing within the United Nations. Because of these facts, it can be concluded that international influence does not necessarily create better human
People have ignored the cries of the weak, innocent, and forgotten for too long. We have a civil and moral duty to not let these cries go unheard. Who are we, if not the peacekeepers of the world? What are we, if not a body of nations, working
The American Bar Association (ABA), Human rights first, and Amnesty International, are three executive agencies that have helped greatly to advance human rights. I believe that these three agencies have sufficiently proven themselves worthy with ample accomplishments that support your allocating funding for them to continue helping the goal of human rights around the world.
Amnesty International has created a “Fair Trial Manual” that guides lawyers, judges, and individual who represent themselves to help conduct a fair trial, according to international human right laws (What We Do: Torture). Regarding torture, the organization makes it clear that anyone that it in imprisoned is in risk of getting tortured. The biggest issue is the lack of accountability to the tortures that happen. Many governments deny their existence, mostly because they are involved, and the torturers are involved with conducting the inquiries. There are also some countries who do not value the importance of basic human rights and that is where Amnesty International steps in. The organization ensures that the tortured have doctors ready to examine, lawyers present during interrogations, and that the detainees are able to contact their families. The organization also has very strong stance against the death penalty. They believe that the death penalty is wrong, no matter what the circumstances may
The Advocates for Human rights’ reputation as a prominent champion for global human rights remains unmatched. Established as an independent non-profit organization, the Advocates for Human rights aims at implementing all-inclusive change through comprehensive strategies.
Link between Atwood’s as an advocate for Amnesty International with Offred’s need to “Speak” her own point of view about and within a society that demands silence and conformity. (Notice that the account is retrospective, recordings found on an archaeological site). Storytelling is the only possible gesture against the silences of death and history.
The world's nations have a "responsibility to protect" people from the worst human rights abuses. For instance, the United
I believe that undocumented people should not be given amnesty unless they’re children. I personally, have families back home waiting to come to United States legally while the undocumented people could just come to the United States, in couple of days. But from the undocumented immigrant's perspective they’re simply trying to start a better life.
Amnesty uses a variety of techniques to stop human rights abuse which include working alongside and against governments. Amnesty work alongside governments to make sure the laws between them are clear, for example Malta and Italy don’t have strong agreement about who is responsible for refugees that are escaping human rights abuse between their countries via sea. Amnesty is working with them to create an agreement. Amnesty also works with protesters and officials to create a safe protesting environment for the protestors. Amnesty said “Law enforcement, from the FBI to state and local police, are obligated to respect and uphold the human rights of our communities.
All over the world, the champions for human faults can only be citizens themselves, and not government chenovniki. In particular, non-governmental organizations play a secondary role in focusing the attention of the international
In light of our recent lectures, I found it fitting to speak about the situation that is currently taking place in Myanmar. The Myanmar government is being accused of extremely hostile actions against the Rohingya people in their country. This includes the burning of villages, rape, and murder. Many of the Rohingya have fled the country in search of asylum. This news story specifically addresses how Amnesty International, a human rights organization, has released evidence of the government’s actions and how, as expected, the Myanmar government is denying every accusation.
The Bonn Agreement of 2001 established the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) as a national human rights institution to protect and promote human rights and to investigate human rights abuses and war crimes. The Afghanistan Constitution of 2004 entrenched the existence of the AIHRC. While the ongoing turmoil, violence and reconstruction efforts often make it difficult to get an accurate sense of what is going on, various
The supporting and advocating on behalf of human rights has been one of the primary principles of the United Nations. Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations has worked to preserve the basic human rights and fundamental freedoms it believes to be deserved of by every man, woman, and child on the planet. Throughout the near seventy years of the United Nations’ existence, it has been challenged with an array of questions, events, and claims regarding the possible violation of human rights. In order to combat these claims, the body has established two organizations to deal with matters of human rights. The first being the Commission Human Rights, was the original organization, founded in 1946. The Commission existed
DDR program. This partial macro-level success, however, must be qualified. Apart from enabling the resumption of full oil mining activities, the Amnesty program has been unable to engage other macro level changes. For example, it has notproduced the much anticipated security sector reforms, which is crucial in order to develop the type of intelligence that would be proactive in preventing future armed conflict. The Nigerian Police Force, a humongous, monolithic body of law enforcement officers, remains ill-equipped, ill-trained, and ill-funded to provide the much needed service to Nigerian people. Moreover, the task of using one central force to police a nation of 150 million people that are fragmented along multiple lines begs for urgent
