The cosmetic industry makes a wide range of products ranging from toothpaste to makeup products. All of these products have a multitude of chemicals that can have potential health risks that many people are completely unaware of. Every country has a different way of dealing with the dangerous environmental issues that are involved with these products. When looking at the United States and European Countries, like England, we can easily see that they have two very drastic approaches when it comes to dealing with these issues related to the cosmetic industry and the process going into making all of these products. England, and other European countries, clearly is more involved with the process and the US should think about adopting a …show more content…
According to their research, many common everyday products contained products linked to “cancer, learning disabilities, asthma, and even damaged sperm.” Similarly, the Environmental Health Perspectives has had numerous articles that has found similar results. One article, “Chemical Exposures: The Ugly Side of Beauty Products”, has found that , “According to these reports, makeup, shampoo, skin lotion, nail polish, and other personal care products contain chemical ingredients that lack safety data. Moreover, some of these chemicals have been linked in animal studies to male genital birth defects, decreased sperm counts, and altered pregnancy outcomes.” Every day, people are using these products, putting them on their bodies, and in return, putting toxins into their bodies. Not only is this bad for the people using the products, but also it is harmful to the people who are manufacturing the products, and the communities around these manufacturing plants, with the toxins leaking into the water and air. Many cosmetic companies disagree with this though. They believe that these chemicals are not that harmful, or if they do know, they simply do not care about the potential issues or make up excuses, their bottom lines and profits are just too important to them. Looking into the chemicals to see if there are any side effects would cost them money; admitting that their products could be harmful could cost them money; figuring out
Throughout the decades, women’s fashion has evolved many times, each time creating a fashion stamp unique to that particular decade. One thing has remained the same and managed to remain a part of every era: hairspray. It is a cosmetic product that is meant to hold hair in its place. A lot of products we use today are may have unseen consequences to daily usage. A product I use almost daily is hairspray. I always knew hairspray was bad for the environment because of the aerosol that was in them would break down the ozone layer, so I began to look at a specific hairspray that I use just about every morning and night, Sebastian Shaper Hairspray, Regular, Styling Mist for Hold & Control. This specific Sebastian Hairspray product is not only
There are some very good beauty products out in many stores that can help the appearance of someone, but there are some that may do more damage instead of help. These products that say that they are revitalizing the skin or putting more sheen in your hair may just be like putting toxins into your body. The most fearful thing about these products is that they could be right in your local store that sells them, but don’t get me wrong not all of them sell things like these but it is still raising a good question of, “What are the ingredients of the hair care or skin care products that you buy?”
These captains of industry have done great things. They donated lots of money to charity. The people who did this are Eastman, Rockefeller, and carnegie.Eastman donated lots of money to dental clinics, schools, and engineering students. Rockefeller created the university of chicago, and the rockefeller institute for medical research he donated over a billion dollars to charity. Carnegie donated over 350,000 dollars to future public education and he also donated money to many museums. They are captains of industry because al the money they donated.
Before buying any beauty products, you should be aware of any harmful chemicals in them
The majority of Americans apply products to their body multiple times a day without knowing what ingredients are in those products. Most of the products sold in the United States are considered toxic because of their ingredients. Shockingly, U.S Law states that “cosmetic products and ingredients do not need Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval before they go on the market” (Prohibited & Restricted Laws). Without regulation, harmful ingredients are slipped into products. These harmful ingredients can cause dangerous side effects such as cancer, skin irritations, hormone disrupters, and more. With a push for FDA product regulation, toxic ingredients in cosmetics could eventually be prohibited in regards to our country’s safety.
Chemicals have harmed everyone over the years. During 2007-2010 there was a huge epidemic of toys that were created with very toxic chemicals. Sometimes we don’t realized or care enough about the amount of damage we to the environment until it hurts the people we value the most for example family and friends. At the time many people didn’t think much of it, but as the media continued to tell stories of chemicals affecting little ones the outraged activists, parents and scientists began to search for a solution to prevent chemical poisoning in children’s toys.
As my 6 o’clock alarm goes off, I rub my eyes open and swing myself out of bed. I stand in front of my bathroom mirror, grab my tube of concealer, and squeeze a dollop onto my pointer finger. As this finger travels through the air, I am largely unaware of the chemicals I am soon to be spreading on my skin. Many people of all ages, including young girls, are experiencing contact with parabens in their daily lives. These chemicals are put in most cosmetic products sold across the country. Many countries have chosen to remove parabens from their stores. The entire southeast Asian region, governed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), made this choice in January of
So many of beauty products have chemicals that aren't good for your health in them but a
Animal testing should not be used in cosmetic industries as a source of experimentation because it is unethical and inefficient. It is a cruel way of trying to find results that are not even always trustworthy. Everyone has a different reaction to different chemicals so why even bother animals for testing? Also different species can respond differently when exposed to the same chemical so animal testing can be inefficient. The results from animal tests can be quite variable and difficult to interpret therefore it may not be applicable to human beings. Thus, consumer safety still cannot be guaranteed even after these gruesome tests which are totally unethical. It is also unethical to torture and end the lives of these animals each year for our own luxury. Everyday cosmetic industries are using defenseless animals very cruelly just to carry out some most often useless tests. Instead they should use other alternatives which has been proved to yield better and accurate results than tests involving animals.
Cosmetic companies that use all natural products generally don’t use animal testing to prove their products are safe for consumer use. The likeliness for someone, for example, to get acne, non-allergy based rashes, and drying of skin is near to none when comparing natural organic products to cheap chemically made drugstore products. Even if products from brands like Almay, Cover Girl, and Maybelline is in stock at local stores and bigger companies, it doesn’t mean that their products are automatically safe to use. According to the executive vice president of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, “Are your cosmetic products safe? Cosmetic companies say yes, but the proof is hard to find. Under current law of the U.S Food, Drug Administration (FDA) cannot require companies to test personal care products for safety before they are sold. Instead, companies must ensure a product is safe. But they don’t have to tell anyone how they came to that conclusion, including the FDA” (Dezio and Wiles). Many companies have put chemicals on the market that eventually have been declared as dangerous. The senior vice president of the Environmental Working Group states, “Phthalates, chemicals found in nail polish, have been associated with birth defects in boys” (Dezio and Wiles). Therefore, explaining the crucial realization of that chemically based products are
A lot of people buy cosmetic products being ignorant to the fact that, that one product has killed a lot of animals. How would you like being sprayed with poisonous liquids, taking poisonous eye drops?, or being fed toxic substances? Cosmetic factories have been doing these inhumane things and more to innocent animals for years.
Having laws banning the use of all dangerous chemicals in beauty products will be a step further into dodging many health dangers. On average, most women use approximately 12 beauty products with 168 different ingredients daily, some of which may be associated
The cosmetology industry has been infamously known for their lack of regulations on companies that produce beauty products. The companies do not operate through the FDA, so they are able to exclude important information from labels. In the past, manufacturers could omit ingredients from labels, claiming the right to protect trade secrets (Nguyen 2). More than 9,000 chemicals are found in cosmetic products; however, only half of them can be found on the labels (Pak 2). Because of the label loopholes, the chemicals in the products have also become unregulated. According to Nguyen at Organic Consumers Association, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not saftey test ingredients used in cosmetic or personal care products before they are sold to the public (2). This leads to toxic chemicals being circulated in the public market. Additionally, if there is not a way to
Consumers are concerned about product safety and the use of animal testing by cosmetic companies.
In 1984, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) evaluated the safety of methyl, propyl, and butylparabens, stating that they were “safe for use in cosmetic products at levels up to 25%,” which is a generous limit, considering the approximate level for parabens ranges from .01 to 3%. However, there are still claims that parabens do more harm than good. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported in December of 1999 “the chemical preservatives called parabens—methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl—displayed estrogenic activity in several tests.” Essentially, they found that parabens have the capability to mimic the body’s own hormones, which can lead to disruptions in the endocrine system, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies, and immunotoxicity. Even though parabens occur naturally in low levels in foods, like strawberries, blueberries, onions, carrots, etc, they are metabolized when consumed, making them less estrogenic. Yet, when the
