In America there are numerous killers that have shocked the nation, but one killer in particular had the world completely dumbfounded. It was the ‘Craigslist Killer’ who would have many people asking questions and wondering why a soon to be graduate from medical school would commit such evil acts. With graduation right around the corner and wedding plans to make with his fiancé, he seemed to have the world at his feet. So who is the ‘Craigslist Killer’?
Philip Markoff, also known as the ‘Craigslist Killer’, was born February 12, 1986. He grew up in Sherrill, New York, outside of Syracuse. He was the son of a dentist and of an educator-turned casino worker. Markoff attended Vernon-Sherrill Central School, where he was on the bowling team,

With the knife he also cut the phone lines in the hotel room. Leffler noticed that although Markoff had gloves with him, he had yet to put the gloves on, meaning that his fingerprints were all over the tape he had used on her. He soon then exited the room and left Leffler there tied up. Leffler waited a while then freed herself from the zip ties and went to her neighbor’s room and asked them to call security, that she had just been robbed at gunpoint. Boston police soon arrived at the hotel and immediately started questioning Leffler (Source 7).
Just four days after Markoff attacked Leffler, he was on the prowl again, but this time it would in end murder. His next victim would be Julissa Brisman, a masseuse and former call girl that Markoff met at the Copley Marriot hotel in Boston, Massachusetts on April 14, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. (Source 1). Thirteen minutes later police discovered Brisman in the doorway of her room after receiving reports of a disturbance. Brisman was found unconscious with multiple gun wounds; one in particular was to the heart (Source 4).She was transferred to Boston Medical Center and was pronounced dead, causes were because of multiple injuries (Source 1). Brisman was just a 26-year-old young lady doing her best battling alcoholism. The Boston police soon realized how seriously dangerous the ‘Craigslist Killer’ really was (Source 4). Shortly after Brisman’s murder another assault was reported, matching the same description of a man
His dead body was found in the woods near Daytona Beach, Florida, shot with a twenty two caliber rifle. “She ended up shooting six .22 caliber bullets into him” (McDuff 202). This is just one of the many catastrophes performed by a woman serial killer. Serial killers are a problem in the United States, murdering on average 2000 people each year (Indiana University np). “In fact, serial murder in the United States alone makes up more than three-quarters of the estimated world total” (Innes 5). Although women serial killers are not very common, they still have a huge impact on the death toll of innocent victims. In order to understand how woman serial killers operate, it is important to understand their motives, the different classifications
One of the most infamous serial killers and sex offenders in America and around the world is Jeffrey Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer is widely known for his killing, dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism. He killed seventeen males between the ages of 14 and 33. He was so well known the was even mentioned in a Katy Perry song. Fortunately his brutally gruesome killings were put to an end in 1994 when he was convicted and sent to prison.
“We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow.” (Ted Bundy). Serial killers are not always those people that look like monsters or behave in strangeous ways. Sometimes they are the successful people, the ones that have a family and a job. The term “Serial Killer” was first coined by Robert Ressler, former director of the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. Serial killers are often defined as people that kill two or more people over a period of more than 30 days with “cooling off” periods between each kill. Many historical criminologists suggest that serial killing has been a component of society since the beginning; suggesting that old stories
Throughout American history, numerous acts of crime have been committed by serial killers that ultimately shocked the nation. A serial killer is defined as “someone who murders more than three victims one at a time in a relatively short interval (Serial).” One particular person who is considered one of the most infamous serial killers on earth is Jeffrey Dahmer. The Jeffrey Dahmer case had a significant impact on not only society but on the criminal justice system as well.
Much is unknown about the Zodiac killer, but given what is known about serial killers in general, this man was probably born between 1938 and 1943. That would make his age between 25 and 30 years old at the time of his first murder in Vallejo, California, in 1968. Also, that age estimate works with witness statements and it's supported by Zodiac's references to his victims in younger terms in his letters of 1969. Zodiac wasn't an attractive character from what we know. He may have had to wear glasses throughout his youth and his facial features weren't all that pleasing. So overall he may have been unpopular as a young boy and spent a good deal of time alone. It seems as though rejection is a big issue for Zodiac. No one knows anything
Richard Ramirez is an infamous serial murderer who terrorized Los Angeles, California in 1985. The media gave him the name the “Night Stalker” when he was on his vicious rampage of forcing himself into the homes of his victims late at night and committing his heinous crimes. Though he was only convicted of thirteen murders, he had many more victims. His crimes were so random, disorganized, and impulsive that the law enforcement officials of Los Angeles had no luck finding Ramirez for months as he grew increasingly more violent. (Tripod.com, 2012) Finally, in August of 1985, the police had enough information from many of his victims to release a sketch of him to the media. The sketch had only been on the news for one
Every serial killer has their own twisted ways to doing their crimes. Richard Kuklinski is no different from other killers in this way. He started young, killing cats and other animals for the fun of it and to feel “empowered”. Different from other killers, he committed his first murder in middle school. Kuklinski beat a bully death and then disposed of it. A lot of their character traits relate back to their young family life. A common pattern in several serial killers is that their parents abused them in some way or the other. Richard Kuklinski, or the “Iceman”, is like these serial killers in the way that he was abused as a young boy. Although there are an uncertain amount of things that led Kuklinski to his brutal, senseless killings, some of the factors stand as: The abuse from his parents, his emotionless personality, and the money he earned from these killings.
A serial killer is traditional defined as the separate killings of three or more people by an individual over a certain period of time, usually with breaks between the murders. (Angela Pilson, p. 2, 2011) This definition has been accepted by both the police and academics and therefore provides a useful frame of reference (Kevin Haggerty, p.1, 2009). The paper will seek to provide the readers with an explanation of how serial killers came to be and how they are portrayed in the media.
Eventually, he ended his rampage in a third floor lecture hall where he shot and wounded several more people before ending his own life. Suicide notes found on him revealed that his motives were based on his hatred for feminists, stating that they have “ruined his life”. It also revealed a hit list containing 15 public figures, probably found through news media sources, but stated that he was unable to act upon it. Instead, all his victims turned out to be strangers that were unfortunate enough to be caught in the killing spree (Maser, 1987).
Richard Ramirez This American cereal killer also went by the name the night stalker. Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas on February 29, 1960. His parents were Mercedes and Julian Ramirez and he was the youngest of seven kids. As a teenager he spent a lot of time with his cousin who had recently came back from the Vietnam war. Together they smoked pot and discussed satanic worshiping and Mike told Richard of the Vietnamese he tortured while over seas. The influence from his cousin along with teenage rebellion had led to Richards drug addiction and that led to petty crimes to support his habits. I believe the breaking point for Ramirez was when he witnessed his cousin Mike murder his wife. Hearing all the torturous story's and seeing his cousin
Serial killers traumatize entire communities and cause tremendous disturbance to everyone. The Gilgo Beach serial killer is also known as the Long Island serial killer and Craigslist Ripper is said to have been responsible for 10 to 17 murders. The killer is said to target those who work in the sex industry and is believed to have been active for more than 20 years. Although the killer has been active more than 20 years the police are nit anywhere near to catching him. This essay will take a look at the investigation of the serial killer, take a look at who some of the victims were and finally give my opinion on how the case is being handled. It is important to note that the identity of the killer has not been identified therefore there has not been a trial and a sentencing. Also for the purpose of this essay I will be referring to the Unsub as The Gilgo Beach serial killer or simply as the killer.
Standing in front of his TV, sipping his morning coffee, Andrew Barnes coughed, grabbing his throat and dropped the cup on the floor. When the announcer spoke, “We are going live to the scene of the brutal murder of the couple in Jackson, Heights.”
It’s a cold California night in December as David Faraday and Betty Jensen are sitting in their car with heavy feeling towards each other. They are the only ones around, lost in each other’ embrace. This might sound like a love story, but shortly after, their fantasy was ripped apart as they stared into the twisted, evil eyes of a man. That was the last thing they saw, evil, and they died in fear. What followed would be the first confirmed murders by the Zodiac killer. He is the most successful serial killer in the world, claiming thirty-seven lives, though we can only confirm five. Both the fact that the police were not prepared for and the fact that the Zodiac evolved allowed him to elude connection to these lurid murders.
What is a serial killer? Retired Special Agent Robert Ressler, a twenty-two year veteran of the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit in Quantico, Virginia, is responsible for creating the term “serial killer.” He defines this person as “one who commits a series of murders, usually three or more, the victims most often being strangers, and usually with a cooling-off period in between each kill” (Kelleher & Kelleher, 1998; Pearson, 1998; Ressler and Shactman, 1997). This precise definition is necessary to distinguish this type of predator from the mass murderer (who kills many simultaneously), mercenaries, war criminals, or mafia hit men.
Albert DeSalvo, more commonly known as The Boston Strangler, was born on September 3, 1931 and died on November 25, 1973 due to a tragic stabbing while in prison. The reasoning behind DeSalvo’s placement in prison were the heinous acts he had conducted in which he raped over 300 women (The Boston Strangler, (n.d)). However, this was not DeSalvo’s first run-around in prison. Years prior to the imprisonment of DeSalvo, he had been imprisoned for breaking and entering into a house During his second imprisonment, DeSalvo admitted to committing a series of 13 murders called “The Silk Stock Murders.”(insert citation) These murders consisted of the killing of 13 women, ages ranging from 19 to 85, in the Boston area. Due to the extent and absurdity of DeSalvo’s crimes, an investigation was lead into his health to determine if something there was something psychologically altered about DeSalvo. It was later found that DeSalvo was a paranoid schizophrenic. However, in order to trigger these behaviors, something must have psychologically deepened his urge to kill.
