Proctor was initially fueled by keeping his wife and a clean name; but, spending time in jail further changed his motives. When speaking to Elizabeth following being accused of witchcraft, he questioned taking the easy way out, stating “I am not a man. My honesty is broke, Elizabeth; I am no good man. Nothing is spoiled by giving them this lie”(137). Proctor sinned previously when performing lechery; as a result of this, he now believes that sinning again would not make a difference. In the eyes of the Puritans, he would already be going to hell due to performing lechery. However, Proctor soon came to the realization that in order to keep integrity he had to be truthful. He no longer wanted to follow in the footsteps of other citizens who
“I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang.” John Proctor is the protagonist of the Crusible, though for the first two acts, he does little to effect the flow of the story as the reader is introduced to their setting. One is thrown into Salem village as the sparks of accuzations begin to fly setting ablaze paranoya in the name of witchcraft. Abigail Williams, our antagonist uses a lie to cover up her mistakes and decides to get something out of it when she discovers that people are ignorant enough to believe her. She takes the chance to throw allegations of witchery onto John’s innocent wife, Elizabeth. The thrust behind this action comes from the fact that a year earlier she had found her way into John Proctor’s arms and with his wife out of the picture, they could dance together on her grave… though Abigail had been in his arms, she had never been in his heart. Abigail would loose complete control of her seemingly simple scheme as she would loose her only purpose she had left in life- John. John Proctors downfall occurs before our story ever begins. We watch his once stregnths become his weaknesses. The standards he held for himself were shattered and he fumbled in picking up the pieces. His downfall did not end his story, but began it as he would have to rebuild his honor and self respect when it mattered the most.
Long ago in Salem Massachusetts there was an event that took place called the Salem witch trials. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, he shows how the witch trials could ruin and distort a person’s reputation and integrity. The courts tortured the accused until they would give up that there a witch, but they posted the names of the so called witches to the churches front doors for the whole town to see. In The Crucible the character who could not deal with the loss of their reputation and integrity is John Proctor.
Abigail Williams has the blood of 20 wrongly accused people on her hands because she puts her lust for John Proctor ahead of honesty, uses other characters as scapegoats for witchcraft, and she flees her own mess instead of fixing it. The reader may see all of thee throughout the text showing abigail doing things that give her more blood on her hands.
In The Crucible, Arthur Miller made Proctor the protagonist to exemplify himself. John Proctor was accused of witchcraft in The Crucible. John Proctor was a man that did not believe in witchcraft. Arthur Miller was the same he did not care about the communism. Miller wrote The Crucible to express his feelings over what was going on in his life about being accused of being a communism.
Proctor 's decision to tell the court about his affair ironically demonstrates his goodness. He also spoke up for the innocent girls that had their names branded. He willingly sacrifices his good name in order to protect his wife and others who are wrongly accused. Only through his public acknowledgment of the affair does Proctor regain his wife 's trust. At the end of the play, Proctor refuses to slander himself by allowing the court to make him make a false confession. The court told him to lie, and that if he lies that he would not be sent to the gallows. He did the right decision by telling the truth about his affair with Abigail. He honestly told the truth about the affair, and that he was not part of the witchcraft. His response further exemplifies Proctor 's integrity. But John was not guilty. He had nothing to do with witchcraft, he admitted to his own mistakes. Proctor knows that if he confesses that he will be damned himself, yet again, if he agrees to confess, he will also be free from the torment from the demon inside him and set others free too. This realization, along with Elizabeth 's forgiveness, enables Proctor to forgive himself and finally regain his good name and self-respect. As the court
When a mother’s child is insulted, her love for her kid becomes apparent as she slowly morphs into an enormous, hairy, sharp toothed, mama bear. She becomes defensive, ready to attack at any moment with claws raised. Arthur Miller, author of the play The Crucible, gives the character, John Proctor, the same aura as a mama bear, or for his sake, a masculine robust bear. Proctor’s dishonesty, hot temper, defensiveness, and integrity help build Miller’s storyline. The argument Miller presents is, even if you make mistakes today, there will always be room for change tomorrow.
Elizabeth is also strong and courageous. When John is accused of witchcraft, Elizabeth is willing to follow along with the decision John decides about whether he wants to confess or not. She knows if he confesses he will be living a lie and if he tells the truth, he will be put to death. Although the decision John makes will affect Elizabeth and she wants John alive, she is courageous towards John by showing her support and love. Elizabeth knows she must put her opinions to the side and John must construct this decision on his own. Elizabeth states, “I cannot judge you, John, I cannot” (Miller). Elizabeth is also strong because she was falsely accused by Abigail and
People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.
“Good people sometimes make bad decisions. But that doesn’t make them a bad person”-Simple Minders .People learn from their mistakes and evolve to a better person. John Proctor is a strong , honest , and smart man which is clearly shown in “The Crucible”. Proctor showed the qualities that make him a great man during the whole story. We saw how he outsmarted anyone and made them look like a fool.We also saw how he was brave enough to stand up to the court and danforth. John even confessed about how he committed adultery with abigail, with honesty. This man didn't care what happened to him and stood up for the name of his family and his wife.

A woman, often judged and doubted on her capability of being strong and able to sacrifice. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, things go way downhill in the town of Salem, Massachusetts as witchcraft is called upon the town and almost all of its women accused. In my opinion, one of the strongest women, truth be told. Elizabeth, Proctor also referred to as ‘Goody Proctor’ is forced to be the strongest she can possibly be for someone being accused of witchcraft in the year of 1962. Throughout Elizabeth’s marriage she has been forced to deal with some extremely traumatic things. Elizabeth has had to face adultery, false accusations, and also loss throughout the entire play. As everything transpires, Elizabeth continues to keep her head up and only grow stronger every time something gets thrown her way.
Elizabeth Proctor, wife of John and mother-to-be. The playwright of The Crucible, Arthur Miller, describes her as arguably the most honest person in the town of Salem. She can be sassy or loving depending on her mood and is known throughout the community as a noble woman. Even though Miller has not shown us much of her in Act 1 and 2, she plays a significant role in the following Acts.
By definition, a tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction (bisd303.org). In the book ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller, John Proctor and his wife, Elizabeth, were both considered valuable members of the community. The reader soon finds out that John Proctor had committed adultery with their servant, Abigail Williams, and that Elizabeth kicked her out as soon as she found out. A tragic hero must have these characteristics: a flaw or error of judgment, a miserable situation brought about because of the hero's error in judgment, excessive pride, and the character's fate must be greater than deserved. (bisd303.org) According to these traits, John Proctor is tragic hero. This is because he possesses all of these attributes. John Proctor misjudged Abigail's capabilities, he wouldn't sign the confession because he couldn't blacken his own name, and he received a fate much worse than anyone ever deserves.
Arthur Miller writer of the book and play “The Crucible.” That relates back to the Salem witch trials. Focusing on one of the main character John Proctor, who betrayed his wife lies and had an affair. The man who told the truth about seeing the devil, and was hung much after his confession. He had some strong hatred against Salem’s theocracy, and how the ran show back then. But Arthur Miller shows how John reacts with his beliefs on the trials; with a willing statement throughout the book on his thoughts.
Marriage is the legalized recognition of the union between two people. Despite the cold and technical definition of marriage, the term holds much weight in American culture. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Elizabeth and John Proctor are seemingly like any other puritan married couple; however, their relationship is much more complex than one would assume. John, earlier in the story, cheats on Elizabeth with their young handmaid, Abigail Williams. This puts a significant strain on their relationship. Abigail still has strong feelings for John, and is in the center of the Salem Witch Trials. Her actions form the basis of the Proctors’ relationship’s development. The combination of Abigail’s power, her lust for John, and her hatred of Elizabeth contributes much conflict to both the plot of The Crucible and the Proctors’ relationship.
