The title of the play we read is The Crucible, the arthur of the play is Arthur Miller. The play is about a town called Salem and these group of girls who make up a lie about being witches and everyone believes them. The reason John Proctor confessed was because the judges kept going at him until he finally said he was a witch. He just wanted it to be over and to have the judges stop badgering him about being a witch. John may of done some things but he's not a witch.
In the play John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams and he believes that it damaged him in the eyes of God, his wife and himself. True he did commit adultery but he lacks the capacity to forgive himself. He resents Elizabeth because she cannot forgive him and trust
To John the affair was just a one time thing and he never wanted it to be brought back up again. But for Abigail it was commitment, since they had the affair then she saw it as John being with her forever, and she realized that the only way for that to happen was to get Elizabeth out of the picture. So even though John Proctor was a good person because of his one little flaw, big issues appeared.
Purification by fire is what happens when you use a crucible. It is a small bowl that is put over a fire, and the contents put inside are heated until only the pure substance remains. It is a test the substance must endure to become pure once more. Many events in life may act like a crucible to a person, putting them through trials that end up improving the person instead. In the case of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, it is a fitting title because many characters go through their own trials and challenges, or crucibles, of their own. Reverend John Hale is one of these characters. Hale goes through his own journey of hardships as he tries to right the wrongs of the court of Salem.
Many people think that John Proctor was a shame of a husband because of the affair he had with Abigail Williams. I agree, his decision to have an affair with Abigail was a despicable thing to do, especially for his wife Elizabeth. John
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play written in response to the “communist scares” in America in the 1950’s. Miller chose “The Crucible” as the title because the definitions of the words match the play perfectly. A crucible is a container that can withstand high temperatures, often used to melt, and change the shape of metals. The town of Salem can be compared to the container that melts metals. The witchcraft trials can be compared to the severe tests or trials. Also, the severe tests or trials can be compared to how people are fighting themselves, and making moral decisions. (Dictionary).
John and Elizabeth proctor were a happily married couple living in salem or so you think. That was until john decides to cheat on his wife for abigail williams, a servant who his wife had just fired. Soon after the affair John's wife Elizabeth found out and she wasn't happy. John continually got the cold shoulder from her for seven months after and she still doesn't trust him. She is now being arrested for witchcraft and will either confess or be hung. Abigail was the one who accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft because she wants john all to herself. This is probably one of those times john is wishing Elizabeth would have forgave him for the wrong thing he did and known he shouldn't have done that.
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a play set in the late 1600’s. The play is based on the events that occurred during the “Salem Witch Trials.” As a result, the council members bring the townspeople to the church to confront the problem at hand. In the play, a group of girls accuse townspeople of practicing witchcraft. One of the main characters, John Proctor, has an affair with a young girl named Abigail Williams. As a result of Proctor ending his affair with Abigail, Abigail accuses Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth Proctor, of using witchcraft to stab her. Therefore,as a result from the stabbing, Elizabeth is arrested. In an attempt to free his wife, Proctor self-admittedly confesses his affair. When the church council brings Elizabeth Proctor forward, she denies the accusations in order to protect John’s reputation. Following the accusations of witchcraft, proctor is then arrested. John is given the option to confess to witchcraft, whether it is true or not, in order to save his life. After signing the confession, John is informed that his confession must be made public. After
The main protagonist, John Proctor, has attributes that go along with most of the seven deadly sins that people commit. The most apparent sin is that Mr. Proctor falls trap into his lust even though he comes to greatly regret his poor decision making later on. John Proctor expresses his regret of giving into his lust for the younger woman Abigail Williams during a conversation with her stating, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby.” (177). He also expresses to Danforth and the rest of the court his deep regret and anger for his actions while also accusing Abigail of her hopes, “...She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now.” (221). As the play continues, he realizes the consequences of his actions and tries to make things right with Elizabeth while revealing his virtue of humility. John prides himself in his name greatly so for
Elizabeth Proctor is a wife of John Proctor and her marriage isn’t that good as her husband had an affair with our other character, previous housekeeper of Proctor’s house, Abigail Williams. Now Elizabeth is cold to her husband and doesn’t believe him as she can’t forgive him the past. She tries to forgive John for the whole play, but something stops her. In the beginning of the play we also see that Elizabeth thinks that she doesn’t deserve John and after his affair with Abigail he thinks about it even more. During the play we see that Elizabeth loves John but still can’t feel free with him. We can see that they behave polite to each other, but with cold and Elizabeth views him with a suspicion. She also dislikes Abigail as
Despite Abigail’s huge role in the Salem Witch Trials, John Proctor is a person who is clearly not innocent. Proctor himself is a smart man who can sometimes just make stupid decisions. He could have easily charged Abigail with fraud at a part in the play, but decides not to. John had an affair with Abigail when Elizabeth was ill which started Abigail on a wild fantasy. She strategically eliminated people to work her way up to Elizabeth to get her out of the way. Proctor always feels guilty about sleeping with Abigail and he is one who will never forgive himself. He feels it is his fault that the Witch Trials are occurring and that God is angry with him for being unfaithful. Despite the
This quote shows how Proctor regrets having an affair with Abigail and does not wish to continue it any longer. Since their encounter, John avoids Abigail as often as possible because he wants to prove to his wife that he truly feels sorry for what he did. He wants to prove that he has changed his ways and that he is a trustworthy man. John loves his wife very much and he tries to show her that the affair was nothing but a mistake. However, Elizabeth still doubts him. “Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, woman. I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches round your heart. I cannot speak but I am doubted, every moment judges for lies, as though I come into a court when I come into this house!” (Proctor,
The beginning of the play talks about John Proctor and how he had an affair with Abigail Williams. Proctor believes his affair with Abigail was cureless in the eyes of his wife Elizabeth, himself, and most importantly God. He also did cave in to commit lechery yet lacks the ability to forgive himself. His relationship with Elizabeth remained strained throughout most of the play but she was still leery at times because Proctor says he feels judged and Elizabeth will not let him forget it. “Spare me!
Crucible By: Sabrina Westen In the Crucible arthur Miller used the character John Proctor to emphasize the importance of injustice. During the play John Proctor faced many obstacles in which he was treated unfairly in almost every situation he went through or faced. The act of injustice was seen a lot in act 4 when John was asked to act guilty for a crime he didn't do in order to save his life.
Sometimes title’s meanings are unimportant, but other times title’s meaning are everything. In the case of Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, the title is a very important aspect to the piece of literature. There is a lot of supporting evidence that shows the symbolism of the title throughout; whether or not its in relation to the characters or the events that take place, there are many details that support the title choice. The title of the Crucible has two significant definitions, and is a good title for the play.
The title of The Crucible effectively helps us to understand the play in a deeper and more thorough way as the definitions of the noun ‘crucible’ reflects the themes of the play such as moral, reputation, courage, righteousness, hysteria and truth. It also foreshadows the severe and unjust persecution of the upright characters who hold on to their beliefs and moral values, as the word ‘crucible’ comes from the Latin word ‘crucibulum’, which derives from the word ‘crux’. ‘Crux’ is also the root word of ‘crucifixion’.
The book The Crucible by Arthur Miller is about the Salem Witch Trials. In the book, a group of girls started to accuse others of witchcraft to save themselves because they were dancing in the woods naked, and Abigail, a girl who had an affair with John Proctor, drank blood to kill John Proctor’s wife so she could be with John. Everyone who was accused was tried in court. They accused Goody Proctor too, John Proctor’s wife hoping that she would either be hung or put in jail so Abigail could have John Proctor to herself. John Proctor finds out his wife was accused, and tells the court that the girls were falsely accusing all the women of witchcraft. He was willing to go to jail by admitting that he committed lechery. Lechery is cheating, but the plan backfires when Elizabeth Proctor doesn’t realize John already recognized for committing lechery. She lies and says John never did that. John ends up being hung at the end. John Proctor is the tragic hero of the play because he is willing to criminalize himself to save others from being killed or put in jail, John died by refusing to admit to witchcraft so he would not lie anymore, and because he was wanted to make things right from when he committed lechery.
